The Internet Public Library Acquires a New Online Reference Tool for Students and Teachers.

ANN ARBOR, MI., April 11, 1997--The Internet Public Library (IPL), a project based at the University of Michigan School of Information, announces a new reference tool for teachers and students: A+ Research and Writing for High School and College Students (/teen/aplus/). This Web-based resource teaches high school and college students how to tackle a "research paper" step by step, from planning to researching to writing. Though there has been much information available online about writing, there have been few resources that teach the research process.

A+ Research and Writing for High School and College Students. gives students strategies for finding information in the library and on the Web in preparation for writing an academic paper. A generous Links section points to articles and other sites on the Internet that can help with the research and writing process. The links are categorized by subject and annotated with short descriptions.

Because this is a large resource, the author has made it available for download in Adobe Acrobat format. The guide can be printed out as a 53-page reference book for home or educational use. It is freely available to be copied for non-commercial purposes.

The author, Kathryn L. Schwartz, of Flushing, Michigan, is a student in the Masters of Information and Library Studies program at the University of Michigan.

The Internet Public Library is a project based at the University of Michigan School of Information, partially supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The library began as a graduate student project in 1995, and is now staffed by professional librarians with assistance from students and volunteer librarians from around the World. The library maintains a collection of network-based ready reference works; responds to reference queries, creates resources for children and young adults; evaluates and categorizes resources on the Internet, and provides a space for exhibitions. The library strives to be a source of innovation in the networked environment, seeking partnerships with organizations with compatible goals.
