"The major aim of IVU is to further vegetarianism worldwide by promoting knowledge of vegetarianism as a means of advancing the spiritual, moral, mental, physical and economic well-being of mankind. To this end it: promotes both World and Regional Congresses to publicise and develop interest in the vegetarian cause and to give opportunities for vegetarians to meet together; encourages the formation of vegetarian organisations and co-operation between them; promotes research into all aspects of vegetarianism and encourages the holding of conferences on vegetarian nutrition; aims to publish and encourage the publication of material on all aspects of vegetarianism; represents the vegetarian cause on appropriate international bodies; acts as a contact organisation for enquiries about all aspects of vegetarianism from any part of the world."

Publications available on-line include "101 Reasons Why I'm a Vegetarian" and "Viva Vine" (bi-monthly magazine). Sponsors annual World Vegetarian Day in October. Based in New York City but covers national/international news and issues.
