The film 13th directed by Ava DuVernay targets an intended audience of the Media and the three branches of the United States government with an emphasis that mass incarceration is an extension of slavery. It is intended to inform viewers about the criminalization of African Americans and the United States prison boom. 13th uses rhetorical devices in its claim to persuade the viewers by using exemplum in the opening seconds of the film. President Barack Obama presents statistics, saying “the United States is home to 5% of the world’s population but is home to 25% of the world’s prisoners.” Also the film uses a hyperbole in talking about the movie Birth of a Nation produced in 1915 which portrays a black man as a violent savage who will kill white women. There is a scene in the movie that shows a white women jumping off of a cliff and plummeting to her death than to be raped by a black man. This is an exaggeration because black people as a whole were portrayed by white people as outcasts, low class citizens, and criminals and there were many white masters raping their black female slaves. In addition to that the 13th also …show more content…
DuVernay includes interviews of professors from American Universities that teach African American studies or just history as a whole, she also brings in politicians, and political and civil rights activists to support her purpose of analyzing criminalization of African Americans and United States prison boom. Another major element to the effectiveness of her documentary is that the documentary won many awards and it is available to watch on Netflix. Netflix is a movie and television streaming platform that many people worldwide use so a good deal of the United States and other people across the world have seen this film due to the popularity of Netflix and
Review of the movie 13th The movie 13th is a documentary by director Ava DuVernay. The title of the film refers to the Thirteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution, which abolished slavery. According to the opening message, one fourth of the world prison population is stored at the territory of the United States. Most imprisoned people in the U.S are people of color.
When one talks about underlying racism, if they ever talk about it, there is a consistent denial of its existence throughout American society. This ever present flaw is not a systematic issue where a person can point out the exact laws that persecute, rather, the government is a vehicle that executes the will of the people in charge of the system. Hence, I see the “13th” film as an exposition of how systematic oppression is not a system oppressing an ethnicity, but rather people using the government as a vehicle to unjustly place African-Americans in prison. Altogether I believe that this tragedy reinforces the notion that the United States will always neglect its cultural outsiders because of how devastating it is to see that “African Americans make up 6.5% of the American population but 40.2% of

Film analysis of Casablanca (1942) One of the most debated topics in recent history questions if Casablanca is the best film of all time. The film was originally released in New York in late 1942, and then nationally in early 1943. Given the time period and the plot, many found this film to be controversial, yet informative, as the movie follows the story of a group of refugees during World War II. This incredible movie is written by John Ridley and directed by Steve McQueen. It was released in 2013 and it is based on the insightful autobiography of Solomon Northrup, who was an African American man living in New York in the beginning of the 1800’s. This movie’s excruciating and authentic portrayal of how slavery was exercised greatly in America is not only heartbreaking, but also an important eye-opener for the people who are ignorant on the subject of slavery and who are not aware of the extreme circumstances the African slaves were forced under in over two centuries. Watching this movie’s portrayal of Solomon’s tragic story and seeing how his autobiography was turned into a painfully beautiful and powerful masterpiece was indeed one hell of an emotional ride. The plot of the movie is based on the life of the main character Solomon Northrup and his journey in life as an educated African American man, husband, father and last but not least slave living in

In 2015, HBO aired a six-part, true crime documentary series titled, The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst. Writer and director, Andrew Jarecki, examined the details of three crimes associated with Durst, including the disappearance of Durst’s first wife Kathy, the murder of his dear friend, Susan, and the murder and dismemberment of his neighbor, Morris Black. While the mini-series was met with acclaim, many – including myself – criticize The Jinx for its storytelling approach. The series seemingly blurs the lines of storytelling – for entertainment purposes – and journalism; raising many questions regarding ethics. Initially, Durst approached Jarecki regarding an interview after he saw All Good Things, a film Jarecki had released
Genetic analysis should be used freely in society, but only to help those who actually need it. The movie advocates the rules of your genetic makeup which leads to certain opportunities being presented to certain people with higher pedigrees than other. If a person's genetic makeup is sub-par you are unable to obtain your goals in life. While this is not true in the real world it could become a possibility in the future. The movie gives evidence of how your genetic makeup could affect who you love, what jobs you get, and expose you to certain discriminations in your life.
The “13th” is a documentary about the American system of incarceration and the economic forces behind racism in America especially in people of color. One of the claims that the author mentioned is that today incarceration is an extension of slavery. It is also mentioned that most of the time in society we are defined by race. In the documentary, we can see how African Americans are sentenced for many years since they are too poor to pay their fines or sometimes most of these people plead guilty to get out of jail fast. However, African Americans are separated from their families and also treated inhumanly in prisons just because they are of a particular race.
Black women are treated less than because of their ascribed traits, their gender and race, and are often dehumanized and belittled throughout the movie. They are treated like slaves and are seen as easily disposable. There are several moments throughout the film that show the racial, gender, and class inequalities. These moments also show exploitation and opportunity hoarding. The Help also explains historical context of the inequality that occurred during that time period.
‘A Time to Kill’ is a movie that depicts the racial tensions between the white and black Americans in the past. The movie revolves around the life of Jake Brigance, a lawyer, and Carl Lee Hailey, as he struggles with the law and racism after seeking justice for his raped 10-year old daughter. As Carl Lee approaches Brigance for help with his case, they both face the challenge of blurring the lines between the white and black Americans and helping Carl Lee escape the long arms of the law. In the movie, racism, negligence of one side of the story, and objectivity are applied.
This film shows the true layers that black women can have in films that is past the stereotypical The sassy black friend The ghetto black women The angry black woman storyline can only be done so many times.
