Known for his references to pop culture and his comedic style, Nick Hornby is a highly acclaimed writer in modern English literature. He was born into a working class family on April 17, 1957 on the outskirts of London, England (Parkin). His parents divorced when he was eleven years old. Afterward, Nick continued to live with his mother and his sister, seeing his dad only on the weekends ("Nick"). As a child, Hornby developed an infatuation with football, or soccer as it is known in America, from his bonding time with his dad at the England

Other than his tendency to include allusions to pop culture and his sense of humor, he is further recognized for the way he portrays the emotion of males and how his works relate to the common issues men have in their adulthood. He is also known as “the master of internal monologue”, with easily flowing and “witty” prose (Lindgren). However, Jonathan Heawood's analysis on his writing says, “Hornby's not the greatest prose stylist since Henry James. He's a rough and ready, get-the-reader writer. Like Graham Greene, he's one of those rare authors who gets away with being a page turner and a writer with something serious to say at the same time.” His novel, A Long Way Down, surely shows these qualities within his
Growing up is difficult for everyone. The great novel Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya portrays a perfect example how growing up might be extremely difficult for some. This is depicted by the protagonist of the novel, a boy named Antonio. He experiences what no boy his age should go through. Rudolfo Anaya’s depiction of the hero’s journey throughout the novel is one of the major themes which greatly contribute the foundation of the novel.
THE ADVENTURE OF THE GREAT SORCEROR In a far away place, there used to be a person called Zylem and He was a very mysterious child that used to do things that no mere mortal could do. Sometimes, when he would come home the items that he brought with him would be strange. The first one was a potion that had the ability to make anything grow two times it's size.
An author can express a much deeper meaning in writing than is shown on the surface. Literary theory is used to open your eyes to show those deeper meanings. While reading Batman the author Marie Lu shows that heroes must face obstacles on their journey in order to become the great person they are. The author uses the situational archetype of the hero's journey as well as the symbolic archetype of the mountain to show the theme of heroes taking a journey and growing into the person they've become.
CHAPTER 3 When I was ten years old. I had a dream of a plane crashing and a girl looking at me through fire. I had that dream for weeks at a time, and I would wake up screaming. I remember a time when my mom was at church, but I was at home, sick, and my father was taking care of me.
How did you become the person who you are today? Each one of us takes personal pathways in life. Many outside forces become positive or negative forces which through cause and effect, change who we are for better or worse. Do you believe that you can achieve all that you set out to achieve? Joseph Campbell lays out his concept of the legend's excursion that each hero encounters on his own particular path.
I would say that Stardust is a romance and adventure story that is made in a way that captures the audience’s attention. Most love stories can bore and seem cliche, but the way that Stardust was structured made it stand out amongst the norm. The story of the film Stardust adheres to“The Hero’s Journey” and can still be considered to be a post-modern work as well. One way that supports Stardust to actually be a “Hero’s Journey” is that it uses all of the steps throughout the film. Knowing “The Hero’s Journey”, it was easy to point out the key elements while watching Stardust.
Darkness. That was all I saw when I awoke. Where I laid was absent of all heat, sending multiple shivers down my spine. I tried to move, but it proved to be unsuccessful, for I could barely move a finger. I had no memory.
Would the statement, all heroes and heroines are originated from the same basis be true? Most likely, ones favorite hero novel would follow the hero’s journey which is the cycle of the hero’s adventure involving different archetypes. A hero novel does not necessarily have to involve supernatural powers and the hero does not necessarily have to save the world; a hero can go through the hero’s journey to save one person or to reveal a hidden truth. If a story follows the hero’s journey, it includes the three categories of the archetypes—character, place, event. Midwinterblood written by Marcus Sedgwick is one example of a novel that fits into the hero’s journey archetype.
Once, in a very distant country, an old man lived. He had a wonderful childhood full of adventure. He often watched the pictures in the albums he had made as a child. But from one album he kept his whole life away. Although, it was the first album he had ever made, he did not like what the album contained.
The journey that a hero takes consists of many different stages. A hero’s journey starts off in the ordinary world. The ordinary world is where you first meet the hero and learn about him. A problem then occurs that makes the hero leave the ordinary world in order to fix it. The call to adventure is the next stage in a hero’s journey.
Only a select few could claim that they have seen and conversed with him. Eventually though, Nick ends up meeting him on accident in a bit of an ironic twist. To Nick, Gatsby was a man with limitless charm and ambition. An entire paragraph was dedicated to describing how positive and reassuring his smile was. Nick even went as far as to say “It understood you just so far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself, and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey”.
2001: A Space Odyssey as a Hero’s Journey Chloe O’Connor Arthur C. Clarke’s 2001: A Space Odyssey can be considered something of a pseudo-hero’s journey story, with a greater focus on the ultimate reason the hero must make their journey. In this iteration of the hero’s journey, humankind is the hero. The quest they must depart on is evolution to a higher form through Dave Bowman’s individual journey, though he is certainly not the ultimate hero, merely the catalyst for the hero to truly be heroic.
F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway are among the most prominent exponents of literature of the twentieth century. Forming part of the Lost Generation, these authors not only develop similar themes throughout their works, but heavily influenced each other. The Great Gatsby being Fitzgerald’s magnum opus, serves as a prime illustration of the staples of contemporary literature. In the novel The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald, the author depicts himself through a character, Nick Carraway, conforming to other self depiction common in the Lost Generation, such as Hemingway in the Nick Adams stories. Nick Carraway and Nick Adams represent Fitzgerald and Hemingway, both serving as apertures into Fitzgerald’s and Hemingway’s view of the world.
