Fame is a tricky thing. The famous are expected to keep a good image and be role models for their fans while being under the limelight, but individuals aren’t perfect. Eventually even the famous show their true colors. Great athletes are admired because they are so visible to the public, but often they do such unforgivable things that to this day they are best remembered by their accomplishments off the field. Simpson. He was involved in a homicide case that is still talked about to this day. His life has been portrayed in books and movies, but the focus isn’t his athletic accomplishments. O.J. Simpson was a very successful professional football player during the 1970’s. He was an excellent running back for the Buffalo Bills and the San Francisco 49ers. After playing football, since he was charismatic and knew the game very well, he became a football commentator on TV and even appeared in a few movies. But in 1994, things took a turn for the worse. He was accused of domestic violence against his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and eventually was a suspect in her horrific murder. Although he was never convicted, many believe he was responsible. His reputation never recovered. Even years later, Simpson couldn’t escape his troubles with the law. He was arrested for stealing at gunpoint in Lad Vegas and he was sentenced to jail. Vick was the leader of a ring of illegal dogfights in his own backyard. His actions were horrific and hurtful to loving animals such as dogs. Vicks made his pit bulls fight pet dogs for his own entertainment. The dogs that didn’t perform up to his sickening standards were physically harmed. The creatures were shot, electrocuted, and even drowned. He organized these fights in his own home and also at other properties. When the police finally found out about what was going on under his supervision, Vicks denied everything even though there was a lot of evidence that clearly pointed to his guilt. Ray Rice, professional running back for the Baltimore Ravens, has disrupted the NFL community because of his domestic violence scandal. The basic information of the case, the negative effects, the positive outcomes, and my opinion should hopefully make you understand the great effect it has on the NFL community. It all started the late afternoon of February 14, Valentine’s Day, at the Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City with two other couples.

Most of them being large in size and being the best of the best and only showing signs of aggression and that they are here dominate the opponent. They have people looking up to them for what they have accomplished on the field and sometimes off the field too. But most importantly those who look up to them emulate who they believe this professional athlete is this blind following is why professional athlete perpetuates hegemonic masculinity through the youth. But, if more athlete showed their love for the game rather then hatred for their opponent, I think that would be a good first step. Professional athletes today can also give false hope and are contributing to a part of the self-destruction behavior for young athletes as well.

Vick would train the dogs to fight each other and if the dogs were not capable of training he would kill them by drowning, hanging or smashing the dogs to death. With the running of the “Bad Newz Kennels”, Vick was charged to twenty three months in prison for illegal dog fighting. Athletes are paid more than very important jobs such as surgeons, teachers, and even the president! Athletes don’t even do very important things, they merely entertain fans in an arena. Do they save lives, educate our future, or run our country? No, they don’t. Finally, an athlete's salary is more than an average American household makes in a whole decade.
The past has shown us that athletes can contribute in changing the world and the star power African-American athletes have in the sporting world today is the proof. Athletes in professional sports today embrace their role in society as role models and for the most part understand they have the stage to be more than just athletes, but historical figures just like those before
