The term "Founding Father" is given to the men who fought for American liberation from Britain in the 18th century and proceeded to build an independent country from the ground up. Certain names are almost synonymous with the term founding father – George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin for example. However, one man who embodied the American Dream before the term was even coined and had an enormous role in shaping America is Alexander
Hamilton. Undoubtedly a lesser known figure to the general public, Hamilton is probably best known to most Americans for being on the 10-dollar bill. Hamilton was born in 1757 on the island of Nevis in the West Indies before he arrived in the colonies as an orphaned teenager, hoping to get a

He was only twenty years old.Hamilton spent the winter of 1777-1778 at Valley Forge with Washington, and the time the Continental Army spent in Valley Forge is widely regarded as a turning oint in the war as the Army emegerged revitalised and stronger than ever. Hamilton spent four years as Washington 's aide. Hamilton was a very skilled writer and his responsibilities included writing letters to Congress, state politicians and generals in the Continental Army. It was here that his political thoughts and beliefs took shape. He was also sent as Washington 's emissary to negotiate with senior army officials and was involved in many high-risk assignments including intelligence and diplomacy. Hamilton was not content and wished to return to active combat but feared he would not get the chance as the war was coming to an end. In early 1981 Hamilton and Washington had a mild disagreement and Hamilton used this as an excuse to resign from his position on
Washington 's staff. He proceeded to ask for a field command but they two men could not agree. Ultimately, several months later Hamilton was given command of a light infantry battalion in Lafayette 's divison. He was given command of

Under the Articles of Confederation, Congress could not demand taxes or money from the states. This meant there was no stable source of funding during wartime for the Continental Army and this made it difficult for them to obtain provisions and to pay soldiers. Hamilton used the discontent amongst soldiers about pay to emphasise how important tax would to be to the country and to congress. An amendment to Articles was proposed that would allow Congress to tax imports, but was rejected by Rhode Island in November
1982. Hamilton and James Madison joined forces to persuade Congress to send a delegation to convince Rhode Island to change its mind. They issued a report that argued that Congress needed financial autonomy and also that Congress needed to be able to put laws in place that would override those of individual states.
Virginia 's rescission of its ratification ended the Rhode Island negotiations.
Hamilton was frustrated at the failure of the establishment of a national funding system and at the weakness of the central government and so he drafted a call to revise the Articles of Confederation, which contained many features of the future
US Constitution. These features included a strong federal government that
The United States, under the Articles of Confederation, did not have the ability to properly deal with the problems arising within the borders of the country. As written to George Washington by a delegate from the Continental Congress, troops that had fought in the American Revolution were discontent because they were not receiving their payments and Congress did not have the capacity to pay off the country’s debts. (Doc C) The government was unable to pay off the debt of the country because the Continental Congress did not possess the ability to regulate commerce. Rhode Island rejected the proposal of a universal tariff, which would have helped to pay off the debt of the new nation.
Lectures Lecture 14 “Questions to Consider #1”: Why did the Anti Federalists object so strongly to the Preamble to the Constitution? The Anti-Federalists objected so strongly to Preamble to the Constitution due to the fact the Preamble establishes powers for the three branches of government, states’ relations, mode of amendment, debts, national supremacy, oath of office, and amendment ratification. This group felts as though when the federalists wanting to create a strong central government would not be strong enough if the Preamble was not put into place. Lecture 14 states, “Anti-federalists suspicious of central power fought the new Constitution tenaciously…..
Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of Treasury of the United States, had a lot going for himself being a man that came from poverty to success, and he was a man “all powerful and fails at nothing which he attempts” admitted a congressman in 1791 (Tindall and Shi). Born in the Caribbean in the West Indies, abandoned by his father and orphaned at the age of 13 by his late mother who had died. Later moved to New York, became a lawyer and transitioned to nationalism thus giving him the important role of handling the weight of the debt America had accumulated $54 million deep after the Revolutionary War (Digital History). Hamilton saw the need for some financial credit to be given to America and he had the right idea by proposing a National Bank to his first president George Washington. Word dispersed of that proposal leading a
Benjamin Franklin was one of the largest known founding fathers of the United States. He was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts. His parents were Josiah Franklin and Abiah Folger. He was the fifteenth child of Josiah and one of ten by Abiah(Franklin Born). His father wanted him to be a clergy but could not afford to send him to school for that many years.
Even before Britain acknowledged that the 13 colonies were an independent state, Congress established a government. However, the Articles of Confederation, written by Democratic-Republican John Dickinson, gave the individual states too much power and the central government too little. This did not give Congress, the sole “organ” of the central government, the power to enforce any national law. Furthermore, the national government had a problem with funding. Congress had no power to
It was at this time that Hamilton wrote an essay publicly defending the Boston Tea Party, and left Kings College to join in the protest against British taxes. When the Revolutionary War began, in 1775, Hamilton joined the New York Provincial Artillery Company and fought for America’s freedom, the next year with help from friends in the New York legislature, he was appointed a captain and at the Battle of Trenton, he organized his own company who kept the British from crossing the Raritan River and attacking George Washington’s main army (Biography.com 8). Washington believed that this showed a great amount of bravery from Hamilton and invited him to be his assistant, and trusted adviser a few years later, with the new rank of lieutenant colonel. Wanting to get away from his desk job Hamilton left Washington’s staff, and was married, but was later given command of a battalion with which he led into the Battle of Yorktown in 1781(DeConde 5). The American success at Battle of Yorktown lead to the signing of many treaties and agreements of peace that officially marked the end of the Revolutionary
How does a historical figure from the 1700’s have his name on biographies, hip hop tracks, and “The Federalist Papers”? Alexander Hamilton may not have written his own biography or hip hop/musical theatre albums about himself, but he will always be remembered as a phenomenal writer. He wrote his way out of poverty. He wrote down his oppositions of Britain’s governing of the colonies. He impressed George Washington so much with, not just his combat skills, but, his skills with the pen that he made Hamilton his writing correspondent during the American Revolution war.
The Articles of Confederation were very weak. One weakness of the Articles of Confederation were that Congress could not tax the colonists, “...did not give the national
This is conveyed by Washington’s correspondence with Hamilton. Hamilton began his decline when Washington died. Freed of the tempered restraining influence of Washington, Hamilton’s judgment faltered. At this point, the book became almost unbearably sad. Hamilton engaged in a number of political feuds with Adams, Jefferson, Madison, and others that clouded his perspective.
However, Hamilton, our first secretary of state, Thomas Jefferson usually never agreed with each other, but that didn’t stop Hamilton to create our first National Bank that was submitted on December 14, 1790. Unfortunately, not everybody liked Hamilton’s ideas because in 1804 Hamilton had died. (“Alexander Hamilton”). After Hamilton's death in 1804, Jonathan Dayton who was elected a seat in our first Congress, he still supported “Hamilton’s financial program” and was “pressed for suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion” (“Jonathan Dayton”). In the end, Hamilton showed leadership by creating our first National Bank, fought in our war like Odysseus fought for his men on his journey home from the Trojan, and wrote two-third of our new

Being a good leader does not necessarily mean shining in the spotlight. Some of the most revolutionary and successful leaders are the ones who worked the lights. Self-awareness, self-direction, vision, ability to motivate, and social awareness are the characteristics of a good leader according to SIY Leadership Institute (SIYLI). There have been many accomplished and renowned leaders in America since (and before) the 1770’s, ones whose names are universally known and others who are unfamiliar. Of the latter is Alexander Hamilton, who showed potential since the minute he was put on earth, for no matter what obstacles were thrown in his way he forged ahead and never threw away his shot.
Because of many of his radical views, he gained a lot of opposition in both the Federalist and Democratic-Republican parties, and was forced to resign, yet still remained popular, with a greatly valued opinion (Brookhiser). Hamilton then lost his firstborn son (Phillip) in a duel when Phillip challenged George Eacker to uphold his father’s honor. And yet Hamilton refused to remain quiet and openly opposed Aaron Burr in the election of 1800, and worked against Burr again when the Vice President ran for New York governorship. In an attempt to heal his wounded pride, Aaron Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel, and the discredited Alexander Hamilton died the day after. (Foner).
This is one of the successful parts of the Articles of Confederation because under the articles, the government cannot institute tax thus the government cannot make money. The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 removed debts from the states and it also allowed the government to raise money by selling off the new
