The Effects of Temperatures on Reaction Time of Alka-Seltzer Emily Reynolds October 11, 2015 General Biology Laboratory Northwest Missouri State University Mrs. Heather Meler INTRODUCTION It has been observed that chemical reactions occur at different rates. But, what causes the rates to change? One of the most effective ways to find the answer to that question is through experiments. It has been learned through experimentation that the concentration of a chemical and the temperature can affect the rate of the reaction (Taylor and Mortimer 2002). The formula of Alka-Seltzer is C16H17NaO14. With its large amount of hydrogen ions, it’s the perfect combination to use. Heat has to be absorbed in order to break hydrogen bonds in a chemical reaction. Since Alka-Seltzer has 17 hydrogen molecules, it would take a lot more heat to break the bonds quickly. The bonds could break at lower temperatures, it would just take longer. This research poses the question: does the temperature actually affect the rate of a chemical reaction? The reaction rate changes based on temperature, so if the cold temperature or hot temperature isn’t the same for all of the trials, the reaction time won’t be either. If the temperatures are too similar, like the cold and room temperature in all three trials, there isn’t a constant temperature gap to accurately see the reaction time difference. The temperature difference between the cold, room temperature, and hot water for each beaker should be constant for all trials. The timer could also be a potential error. The time needs to be started and stopped at the same point for all of the tablets, so human error could have occurred. Also, the tablets could pose an error if they aren’t the same size or broken. The tablets used should not be broken, and they should be weighed before each

A buffer solution minimises change in PH of a solution when small amounts of acid or alkali are added to the solution, with an an acidic buffer solutions maintaining a PH<7 (ChemGuide, 2017). It works through an equilibrium, so if the concentration of H+ or OH- are changed, equilibrium will shift to oppose this change and return solution PH to original value. The Alka Seltzer mixture contains an excess amount of the bicarbonate ion which is vital for the buffering action taking place within the solution. This is because the excess bicarbonate ion present, allows the solution to act as a buffer as it’s able to react with small quantities of acids and bases added to the solution, therefore resisting a change in PH by neutralising them.
In our project we mixed different sizes of tablets and water and see if there is a reaction. The tablets are solids and the water is a liquid we are trying to see what happens when they collide. When Alka-Seltzer have many compounds in them. Alka-Seltzer is a medicine that is used to treat heartburn. It is made by many ingredients, which are bicarbonate, aspirin and citric acid.
Introduction Alka-Seltzer has been on the market since 1931 and has helped to relieve indigestion and upset stomach. The tablets began to fizz and bubble when dropped into water. “The fizziness happens when baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and citric acid react chemically in water. They yield sodium citrate, water and carbon dioxide gas, which causes bubbles.” Based on this information, we will measure the reaction time of AlKa- Seltzer dissolved in 200 ml of water at 3 different tempertures in the first portion of this experiment.

In order to find out if temperature controls the rate of chemical reaction, whether hot water is a more effective way to make the gas produce at a faster speed, it would be necessary to compare the results of different temperatures at the end of each trial. In order to do this the scientists will measure the volume of gas that is produced within a 10 second interval time after the tablet begins to react.

While energy drinks are not a new product, their popularity has soared in the last decade. Advertising promises the consumer instant and long lasting energy to make it through the afternoon at work or through an evening of dancing. Some drinks even advertise themselves as all natural or contains no artificial ingredients which mislead consumers into thinking they are safe to consume. The ingredients range from innocuous such as spring water to common such as caffeine.
