I believe that Animal Farm is an allegory and it is symbolizing Soviet Russia. There are many reasons for this including certain characters representing real people. I believe that Major would represent Karl Marx or Friedrich Engels. “Man is the only creature that consumes without producing. He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plow, he cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits”. Here he introduces the idea of “Animalism” which was the foundation for the revolution. Another character who represents someone real is Napoleon who represents Stalin, the Russian leader who wanted to destroy anyone who opposed him politically. Compare Niemoller’s cautionary poem with Orwell’s allegorical story of the Manor Farm. How are their messages similar or different? How is the method of delivering those messages similar or different? The ways in which their message are similar is because they are both writing something in a cautionary way. Both of them are using ways of writing to convey negative thoughts for something. Their message may be a little different because one is telling as someone who never supported who they are warning against and one of them was a supporter who changed their mind. Also, the message may be slightly different because one of them experienced the direct effects while the other is on the outside looking in. The way in which they deliver their messages are different but are meant to have the same effect. One of them is using a very indirect metaphorical way of conveying their message, while the other uses specific examples. Also one chose to write a poem and the other chose to write a novel. Orwell chose to write his story from third person perspective and Niemoller chose to write his story talking directly how it had an effect on him.
