The Robot Invasion Summary
An example of the impact of robots can be seen in the warehouses across the country such as Amazon, who currently utilize over 55,000 robots in their facilities and have become far less reliant on the human workforce (Winick, 2017). In the article “The Robot Invasion” by Charlie Gillis, the author observes the importance and continued focus of robots in our work environment as well as our everyday lives. Gillis does an excellent job displaying the growth and development of technology in the workplace and supports his argument by providing resolutions and relief to those concerned with these rapid changes. Throughout the text Gillis showcases how technological advancements have had a profound effect on society, particularly in development in the workplace. He begins by observing the experimental process by which scientists are inspired to create. In developing robots many experts have tried to emulate the patterns and work habits of nature, marveling at their consistency and the efficiency at which they are able to complete tasks. In the text Gillis refers to futurist Thomas Frey who predicts that by the year 2030 robots would be responsible for approximately half of the jobs on Earth (Gillis, 2012 pg #480). Many customers will claim to feel the frustrations and growing pains associated with technology taking over jobs citing examples like self-checkout lines and automated phone systems. Businesses may use these services in order to help cut costs but this will oftentimes come at the expense of the consumer.
