The concept of the city has always been preceded with visions, goals and objectives. In Ontario, this vision is guided by the Planning act which issues provincial policy statements to control land uses. The municipality's responsibility is to determine the future of their community through the preparation of planning documents which enable planning decisions. This includes both the Official City Plan and zoning by-laws (The Planning Act). Adopted by Council in 2002 (Toronto Official Plan 3-5) Toronto’s Official Plan is a vision for the city as a whole. The strength of the Secondary Plan implementation lies in the public realm. As soon as one enters the gates of the Area he begins to be aware of its history. This is due to the implementation of policies within item 3 on Heritage. Overhead bridges, pipes and chutes as well as equipment have been restored and are continuously maintained. This reflects the industrial heritage and assists in the historical interpretation of the area (King-Parliament Secondary Plan, 15). The quality and character of Trinity Street is maintained through the closed vehicular access as was outlined in item 7.3. The limitation on mechanical penthouse and HVAC equipment is quite successful. Pure Spirit Condominiums located within the Mixed Use Area 1. Its design also addresses the principles on heritage outlined in the Secondary Plan. It is sympathetic in its massing, programming and materiality, addressing policy 3.5 which states that new buildings are to be designed in a manner which respects and complements the heritage character of the Area (King-Parliament Secondary Plan, 15). The Secondary Plan specifies that the massing of new buildings will provide a transition from from the historic buildings in Mixed Use Area 2 with the highest building being located adjacent to parliament (King-Parliament Secondary Plan, 27). In 1915, Australia’s official war correspondent, Charles Bean, travelled with the AIF to the Western Front. The hardships of Australian soldiers, particularly in the battle of Pozieres, effected in Bean’s determination in the idea of creating a memorial museum dedicated to Australian soldiers in remembrance of their trials in WW1 and how faithfully they served their country, even in their dying moments. Roles of Charles Bean and John Treloar Charles Bean and John Treloar are known as the ‘founding fathers’ of the AWM. Their individual work formed as a collaboration to the conception, lobbying and creation of the memorial. Bean was appointed as official war correspondent in 1914, sending stories back home from Gallipoli.
This paper will be examining the Canada Yearbook of 1905. The yearbook describes and summarizes the different changes that occurred throughout the year of 1905, it observes the changes in Canada’s politics, economics, and social demographics. In short, this yearbook is a collection of annual data collected through the year of 1905, which credible and reliable information on all that occurred that year. The publishers took into account all aspects that need to be placed into consideration when forming/creating infrastructure. For this reason it important to examine everything, happening within the city in order to gather efficient information that will make the infrastructure flow easily.
Bethel High School District 403 v. Fraser Matthew Fraser, a student studying at Bethel High school, gave a speech at a school assembly to nominate his friend as a candidate for student government. The speech contained many sexual references and innuendos, but no obscene content. Making his speech, Fraser was suspended from Bethel High school for three days. His parents appealed the school's decision and Washington Supreme Sourt agreed the his freedom of speech rights were contravened, the school board appealed the case to the Supreme Court.
1. Three planned legacies for Brisbane, and by extension, the state of Queensland The long-term legacy for Brisbane of hosting 2024 Olympic Games will be: urban, sporting and economic legacy. As part of Brisbane development planning which focuses on calling Brisbane home, putting Brisbane to work, (Brisbane City Council, 2006), these three legacies will not only accelerate the implementation process but also maximize the benefit of the current development strategy. Urban Legacy: The geographic location of the Olympic Village will be at the north of Brisbane, where is in correspondence with city development planning.
This film is a documentary that focuses on the urban growth in Phoenix, Arizona, and its continuing expansion of the city. The documentary explains how Phoenix is right now the 6th largest city in America and is just continuing to grown and spread across more dessert land. Voices of residents, and government officials are expressed in the video and give insight into the causes and affects influenced in the area. Alfredo Gutierrez who was interviewed in the documentary made and interesting comment about the growth of Phoenix, he stated “As we speak here today, there are thousands of people who are coming here with the same dreams, with the same ambitions. And those folks change this place and change the values and the direction of this place.
Do you ever just stop and think about the architectures that surround you every day? Maybe about how they were made, or what the inspiration was behind building them? People are often not aware of how the buildings came to be, they just care that it is there now. When you stop to think about the historical descriptions of how the buildings were made, you start to realize why the construction of these buildings are the way they are. Men like Vanderbilt, Carnegie, and Rockefeller constructed these structures to serve a purpose for others around them.
Residential schools were first being established in the 1940s and the last one was finally closed in 1996. In these residential schools, First Nations people were very badly treated and one who went to those schools would not get a proper education. The students who went to those schools would still be affected by it and effects from them are showing still to this day. Why did the Canadian government create residential schools in the first place?
The Toronto Regent Park area is known for being a culturally diverse, yet highly impoverished and socio-economically divided are. The Regent Park revitalization project is a large opportunity for Toronto Community Housing to recreate the area to become a vibrant, mixed income community. The project will be support the infrastructure/economy as well. The addition of commercial areas will increase employment rates and possibly remove a percentage of the citizens from the poverty line.
Bethel School District will introduce a last recourse before the United States Supreme Court and have the Supreme Court justices delivered a controversial opinion about the exercise of the freedom of expression within American schools. Mainly, as noted before, the Bethel School District v Fraser case was related the right of freedom of expression as guaranteed by the First Amendment to the US Constitution, in its exercise and its limitation within the school boundaries. On July 1986, by a majority vote of 7 against 2, the United States Supreme Court delivered a determinant opinion that will put a limitation on the exercise of the freedom of speech at school. In that opinion, Chief Justice Warren Burger set up a new rule opening the door for a legal limitation of the freedom of speech at school.
Description of your tour stop – 3 marks The Danforth neighborhood otherwise known as Greek town due to its Greek population ; is one of Toronto’s most recognized neighborhoods. It is the largest Greek community in north america with over 300 stores stretching over 9 Km. Named after Asa Danforth, the Danforth Avenue is located near Queen St. East and Kingston Rd. It is well known for its long streets, loud music, restaurants and more.
Children who grow up in poverty are faced with a series of issues which impact their education and social atmosphere. In both the school and home setting these children lack the proper resources which they need to succeed academically. Across the country, people have begun creating programs which aim to help children in poverty succeed, despite their socioeconomic status. These programs range from after-school reading, tutoring services, charter schools, and free summer programs. All of these programs provide children with extra academic help which they may not be receiving in school or at home.

To find out how a city is actually doing it has to see itself from an outside prospective. They will most of the time see that what they though was normal is actually something they grew accustomed to. A way that can lead to planners being progressive is to use a therapeutic approach. This approach involves “the “whole person” to be present in negotiations and deliberations, but being prepared to acknowledge and deal with the powerful emotions that underpin many planning issues” (Sandercock, 2004).
The Magazine The American Revolution (led by Colonial Williamsburg) started with the Magazine. This building has historical significance, relevance for citizens today, and it connects to the motto, “That the future may learn from the past.” The Magazine had guns and weapons the troops could use for war. The Revolutionary War did start with the Magazine.
