In the article, “Have we literally broken the English Language? ”, the author Martha Gill depicts a fact that the word “literally” has changed its semantic meaning from literally to figuratively. Gill’s perspective that people need to “avoid [the word “literally”] completely” indicates her prescriptive attitude towards the word’s meaning change since she focuses on correcting the rules how people should use a word.
At first sight, prescriptivism emphasizes that people should follow rules learnt consciously in school to speak and write a language. At the beginning of the article, Gill provides the definition of the word “literally” based on Google to show that many words have developed their original meanings in recent days. Gill presences a pessimistic attitude that the language will be slowly and eventually changed into the one that is no longer beautiful than previous. Indeed, only a prescriptive grammarian would say people should confirms a set of rules to achieve certain grammatical style. On the other hand, the misused word “literally” can be traced back to 1827. “Literally” is used to mean actually or really, whereas it has become “figuratively”, which the statement does not actually happen, from 1800s. Gill states the word “literally” has been “playfully abused since the time of Walter Scott”. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” the author, Richard Connell uses the wonders of figurative language to spice things up in many ways throughout the story. Almost every page had something lying within itself, hidden behind metaphors similes, personification, and the list goes on. Some examples of how Richard Connell uses figurative language were clearly displayed on page 62: “Didn’t you notice that the crew’s nerves were a bit jumpy today?” This page also began to reveal the main feeling/emotion of the story(eerie/suspicious) came to be-which was set off by the example I used above. The English Only movement has been around for a long time, but it has been overlooked by most. Most Americans speak English from the moment they learned to talk; many others learn English as a second language. For this reason, many Americans oppose to the existence of non-English languages being spoken in the United States. In Warren J. Blumenfeld’s essay “‘English Only’ Laws Divide and Demean”, the author speaks about the “English Only” Movement and how people who support and oppose it feel towards this situation. He uses rhetorical appeals such as ethos, logos, and pathos in order to make people understand the severity of the situation and for the writing to have an effect on its readers.
The Westing Game, a mystery novel that introduces many different doubtful characters and takes you into the scene of 16 different personalities along one of them is ‘supposed’ to be a murder. Sam Westing, a dead millionaire who is supposed to have been eliminated by a murder. Ellen Raskin gives you the feeling of mystery and suspense. This creates an absorbing mood for the reader to have. The author uses very specific language which makes the reader ponder, and develop more detailed questions.
Review of Vershawn Young Discussion After reading “Vershawn Ashanti Young: Should Writers Use They Own English?” against Rebecca Wheeler’s “Code-Switch to Teach Standard English (Young 111. Wheeler 108)”. Each paper expresses a different opinion regarding the teaching of English in the classrooms. Each author writes with different agendas, different tones, and different purposes. In her essay, The Legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt, author Betty Houchin Winfield argues that because of her journalistic career and the precedent she had on the role of the first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the most influential women in American history. Winfield, unlike many other authors who write on the topic, does not spend an extensive amount of time focusing on Eleanor’s works in organizations and charities. However, Winfield chooses to support her argument by supplying ample information concerning the precedent Eleanor left not only on the role of the first lady, but also on the role of the American woman. Authors use figurative language to engage their readers and make their story more convincing or interesting. Authors also use it to help add mood fluency and imagery to their books. For example, in Ender’s game the author uses figurative language a lot to help the reader understand and help picture what 's going on in the scenes. The author uses metaphors, and hyperboles to create vivid images. The author use these literary devices to enhance the novel.
In King’s letter, he states, “We must use time creatively, and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right.” Funny thing is he had lots of time to think about and write this letter. He wanted this letter to encourage and bring up a people that will start a revolution. He needed something, that special something, that would ignite the fire that had somehow died out. His Letter from Birmingham Jail was the match.
Jake Jamieson wrote “The English-Only Movement” while he was a student at the University of Vermont. In this essay he discusses the issue of legislating English as the official language in the United States. He strongly beliefs that the government should not fix an issue that is not broken. Throughout his writing he uses outside resources that support the idea of English-only; even though he was trying to explain the differences about both side it seems like he is being bias at first. Jamieson could have made his paper stronger if he would have stated what he believed instead of saying others believe; although his arguments are based on people’s rights and emotions towards being obligated to speak English in America his argument contains evidence and communication abilities to get his point across.
One example of figurative language in Laurie Hale Anderson’s book “Speak” is when Melinda decides to rid her garden of all weeds, and does some spring cleaning after it finally stops raining during May. Around the same time, Melinda is realizing that she wants to make some new changes in her life and in this figurative language example, Melinda’s life is her garden. She decides first to rake the leaves “suffocating the bushes” ; Melinda is ridding the demons from herself on the first layer of her skin. She says that she has to “fight the bushes (her problems)” and the bushes don’t like getting cleaned out but it is something one has to do if one makes
The theme of the essay “Self Reliance” written by Emerson is for beings to not focus on those of others or subside his/her values to fit in with our society, for true geniuses comes from within and are made with their own heart and mind. His idea of self-reliance differs from that of the norm in that he doesn’t encourage those to mix into selfish ways but to be open and proud of their own individuality for that is the true key to life itself. Emerson’s idea is similar to the common use in that he encourages those to not depend on others to define his/her identity. 2. Emerson’s use of figurative language encourages his readers to view his ideas in a clearer and more emphasized perspective.
The Language Police, by Diane Ravitch, meticulously documents the authors search for solving the political mystery behind the unorthodox reasoning behind K-12 education. She always believed that textbooks were designed to help students gain beneficial information, and that tests were assessed on the knowledge from what they had learned throughout the year. Over many years, testing was reflected on a controversial language of screening and affairs that negatively were associated with all personable groups. What once had been commended had now developed far beyond the method of censorship. It was now, restricted as an approach for masking the reality of literal knowledge from students.

Tan was in shame and pain when she would feel that people were giving her mother a negative reaction. As Tan grew older she realized that it wasn’t a big deal that her mother’s English was not that well. The "limited" and "broken" English Amy Tan 's mother speaks is similar to the one my parents are most familiar with. Tan’s childhood experiences resemble my personal experiences in which, I would assist my parents in situations alike. Tan found herself speaking on the phone pretending to be her own mother; keeping her mother from going through embarrassment and bad customer service. Similarly, when my parents found themselves conversing with a representative from customer service, I would translate and attempt to clarify any miscommunications that could potentially lead to misunderstandings and/or incidents. Unfortunately, because I was too young and naive towards the language, I wasn 't much help.
