In the TED Talk “Hooked by an Octopus” by Mike DeGruy talks about his experiences as an ocean cinematographer. Mike explains how his first experience with an octopus was at age five or six and was immediately amazed by it. He said that it was very scared at first trying to get away and escape from his hands but after a few moments it settled down and started flashing all sorts of colors. He then brought the octopus back to the ground to let it go and once the octopus hit the sand it just vanished. Mike explains how it was unlike he has ever seen before and that was the moment he became hooked. Later in his life he became an American documentary filmmaker specialising in underwater cinematography. Mike DeGruy was a regular on Shark Week and even a shark attack survivor. He is well known for his shark attack in april of 1978 where he got severely bitten by a grey reef shark. He was a member of many deep sea expeditions and was a part of the team that first filmed the vampire squid and the nautilus. Mike DeGruy died in a helicopter crash in Australia on February 4, 2012. A few years after his death there was a feature film documentary made about his life and work. “If you walked up to an octopus tank, especially early in the morning, and before anyone arrived, the octopus would rise up and look at you.” When …show more content…
He said “If you ever really want to get away from it all and see something that you have never seen, and have an excellent chance of seeing something no one has ever seen, get in a sub. You climb in, seal the hatch, turn on a little oxygen, turn on the scrubber, which removes the CO2 in the air you breathe, and they chuck you overboard.”. To me this sounds like an unbelievable experience to just be able to go into almost a whole new world. I would love to be able to see all the different creatures that are living on the same planet as us, yet we know almost nothing about
It is lead to believe it ranges from three to ten. One of his murders included a young boy named Billy Gaffney. Billy and a younger boy were playing catch and on their way home both boys went missing. The youngest one was found and said that the “boogeyman” had taken Billy. Even though Billy’s body was never found Fish wrote an in detail letter explaining to his attorney that he took Billy to a house by the dump and that is where he hung him and ripped pieces of his body apart.
Man Taken By Shark Yesterday in the early morning at around 4am a young pearl diver at the age of 30, was attacked by a Tiger shark. He was out in Roebuck Bay on the coast of Kimberly when this incident happened. The pearling crew confirmed that the victim of the attack was Samuel Jackson, and that they had been unaware of his attack when it happened because he was so far away. The crew of the lugger pulled in his air hose to find no one at the end.
During the same summer, Charles Bruder a bell- hop at a hotel in Spring Lake decided to go for a “quick dip” in the water during his break. He was ferociously attacked by a great shark, which many think to have been the same one to attack the Vansant child, and died
I watched the movie, scene by scene, frame by frame, rewinding, forwarding, unable to believe my eyes. I witnessed my own murder. The camera caught Susan or Tracy or whatever her name was, tying me up. I looked so foolish, the beatific smile on my face was sickening. I felt like throwing up.
This essay will examine the functions and effects of cinematography in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws Jaws follows the police chief Brody, along with scientist Hooper and shark hunter Quint, in their attempt to protect the town of Amity against a Great White shark that is terrorising beachgoers. It was adapted from Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel of the same name. Following its release in summer 1975, Jaws became the highest grossing film As Jaws was one of the first motion pictures to be shot partially on water, the production came across issues with the prosthetic shark, and as a result, Spielberg decided to only suggest the appearance of the shark as often as possible, as opposed to showing the prosthetic body during attacks. This sparing use of the prosthetic, and primary focus instead on creating suspense and dread without the shark visibly present, proved to be an inspired decision, as Jaws is considered a pioneering achievement in the horror genre.
While this film shows a human developing a certain bond with a wild creature, it undoubtedly has a different feeling, tone, and approach than Grizzly Man that I personally believe make it more convincing as a whole. To elaborate upon this, the primary reason for the documentary is to demonstrate how this singular aquatic animal was able to completely change Craig Foster’s outlook on life after he experienced severe burn-out. This was similar to Treadwell and his frustrations with life and humans, but after viewing both documentaries, I wholeheartedly found Foster to be much more introspective, compelling, and convincing than Treadwell. Foster intentionally researched octopi, including their behaviors and habits, to mimic their actions to establish rapport and trust with the creature. This alone felt more convincing because it indicated that Foster was trying to establish a genuine relationship with the octopus rather than allowing the octopus to simply tolerate his location in its natural habitat.
When I read this sentence in David Foster Wallace’s essay “Consider the Lobster”, I felt a distinctly physical sense of repulsion and empathy: “Lobsters don’t have much in the way of eyesight or hearing, but they do have an exquisite tactile sense, one facilitated by hundreds of thousands of tiny hairs that protrude through their carapace.” The phrase “exquisite tactile sense” is what really struck me, not because it’s a particularly special phrase in and of itself but because it was placed in the passage after terms like “live dismemberment” and “knife-in-the-head method” had been thrown out for the reader’s consideration. I can’t help but think that Foster Wallace did this intentionally as a way of emotionally skewering the reader; all I
Brady had a positive essay and she only gave one example. She told us how even though no one knew what the blobs were, they all seemed to like them. “No one knew what the blobs were, but one thing was certain: Everyone liked them” (Brady 126). When the “blobs” first appeared in Gloucester they made the front page of the paper. Even when everyone found out the scientific name of the invertebrates they still had refused to recognize them as anything else, but “blobs”.
People are always told that they should treat everyone the same way, so how come some people believe that that logic doesn’t apply to animals? In the documentary Blackfish, it gives the viewers insight of how orcas truly live at SeaWorld. The main example being a male orca names Tilikum. Males are extremely valuable to them because they tend to use them to breed and obtain more orcas. The orcas are constantly given a bad name because people may think that they're dangerous, but the documentary shows that they're only acting this way because of their living environment.
(a) General Description of the Person Squidward Tentacles is one of the main characters of the children television cartoons, SpongeBob SquarePants. He is a turquoise-colored, six-legged octopus living in a Moai in Bikini Bottom, the town the show is featuring. As a neighbor of the main character SpongeBob SquarePants and his friend Patrick, Squidward is featured in many of the episodes of the show. It is often seen that Squidward is the grumpy and hot-tempered one in the show, often keeping to himself by staying in his home as well as shutting down his neighbours who constantly play near his home. Despite both SpongeBob and Patrick claiming that Squidward is one of their good friends, the feeling is not mutual.
In The Shallows, Nicholas Carr discusses the internet’s effect on human thought. This is perfectly shown in Chapter Nine which is titled “Search, Memory.” Carr speaks on how the internet effects long term memory. The chapter quotes one of the smartest minds in the history of Western Civilization, Socrates. Socrates is quoted, “Writing down their thoughts and reading the thoughts of others had written down, they become less dependent on the contents of their own memory.”
“When life gets you down, you know what you gotta do? Just keep swimming.” This is a quote that I personally live by. Pixar’s fifth feature film, Finding Nemo was released in theatres on May 30, 2003 and is one of the highest-grossing animated films to ever be created.
People say a picture is worth a thousand words. Just about every picture has rhetorical elements incorporated into their design. In this case, the well-crafted poster for Steven Spielberg’s film, Jaws, implements the use of ethos, pathos and logos in an attempt to get its audience to see the film. The poster for jaws is very effective at gaining the audience’s attention through the use of graphic pictures.
Jonah and the Whale is a story based around a prophet who was the son of Amittai and lived in Israel around the 8th century. One day the Lord came to him and said “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.” However Nineveh at the time was a rival town to Israel and Jonah became angry at God for asking him to do so and he decided to go against Gods order. Jonah got on a boat and attempted to travel to Tarnish, once god saw that Jonah had disobeyed him he created a storm over the ocean that Jonah was on and once Jonah figured out that the storm was meant for him he told the crew to throw him over board while the crew swore vows to God. Once in the water God sent a Whale to swallow Jonah instead of drowning, he spent three days in the whales stomach praying to God and asking for forgiveness, he cried "Salvation comes from the Lord."
I got my dad to take a picture of me holding the shark then after that I threw it back in the water. After I threw the shark back we decided to go back to the beach house. When we got back to the beach house we didn’t do much we just chilled out for the last night because we had to leave the next day around
