The author says “ I grow old through Pleased with my memories/ The task I can no longer complete/ are balanced by the love of the task gone past”(1-3). The kind of emotion that she is giving us is the sense of getting old knowing that she had made memories and that she is happy with the ones she made. The task that she couldn't do is because she grew old and was not able to do that but she did find a way to accept the task that she couldn't do in her life or the things that she wanted to she couldn't but she did replace and find a way through that with “love”. However she found ways to accept it being old through her memories and the love that she had found in this quote has shown

In Marilyn Nelson Waniek’s poem “The Century Quilt” an abundance of imagery, positive connotation, flashbacks, and a creative structure is used to develop the complex themes and ideas represented in the poem. These devices create a meaningful and concise story of the values each family may have, and the importance to keep these values alive. In order to convey the importance of family value or in this case the quilt. Waniek describes the quilt having “Six Van Dyke brown squares, two white ones, and one square the yellow brown of mama’s cheeks.”
she asked. “Do? Nothing, except feel glad and happy to be alive” (78). If she felt these positive emotions, why did she not start over again with
This particular poem is about parents that have no idea what's going on in their kid's daily life and what they go through. With this type of action, the parents act as if all is good and make little to no effort to get involved in their day to day activities. This shows the kid that the parent does not care or seems like it. The kid will be influenced to do things they normally wouldn't do. If the parent would at least make an attempt to get involved, it may influence them for the better but until then it will not happen.

The poem begins with the speaker looking at a photograph of herself on a beach where the “sun cuts the rippling Gulf in flashes with each tidal rush” (Trethewey l. 5-7). The beach is an area where two separate elements meet, earth and water, which can represent the separation of the different races that is described during the time that her grandmother was alive and it can also represent the two races that are able to live in harmony in the present day. The clothing that the two women wear not only represent how people dressed during the different time periods, but in both the photographs of the speaker and her grandmother, they are seen standing in a superman-like pose with their hands on “flowered hips” (Trethewey l. 3,16). The flowers on the “bright bikini” (Trethewey l. 4) are used to represent the death of segregation, similar to how one would put flowers on a loved one’s grave, and on the “cotton meal sack dress” (Trethewey l. 17) it is used to symbolize love and peace in a troubled society.
