Breydon Holtti’s essay “Read This Story and Get Happier” Response
Happiness is a complex and subjective emotion that can mean different things to different people. At its core, happiness is a state of well-being that is characterized by feelings of contentment, joy, and satisfaction. Some people view happiness as a temporary emotion that is brought on by external events such as material success, a successful relationship, or a special accomplishment. Others view happiness as a more internal and long-lasting state of being that is rooted in a sense of purpose, self-acceptance, and connection with others. In an article called “Read This Story and Get Happier” written by Adam Sternbergh.

People with a strong sense of purpose often feel more fulfilled and content, regardless of their external circumstances. This sense of purpose can come from many different things, such as work, family, or volunteer work. For me, it comes from my family and my dreams. My family is a huge part of what makes me happy. When I’m sad I know I have someone to go talk to and somebody to lean on. My dreams are also a key source of my happiness. I have dreams of owning rental properties around my hometown and making a living off them. My dreams are also to travel the world, ever since I was little, I have always wanted to explore the world and see everything there is to …show more content…
Sternbergh says that “College students are much more overwhelmed, much more stressed, much more anxious, and much more depressed than they’ve ever been. I think we really have a crisis writ large at colleges in how students are doing in terms of self-care and mental health.” (Santos) I think this is very true, especially nowadays. I believe that we as students are given too much work to do in such little time. All this work given to us all at once takes up all our free time and gives us so little time to enjoy ourselves and do the things that make us happy. I believe happiness is something you do to clear your head and relieve stress. Something I like to do to relieve stress and feel happy is listening to music. Listening to music makes me calm and feel at peace. Another thing I have learned to do to relieve my stress is to talk to my friends or watch some tv or something that engages my brain. I think there are a lot of reasons why some people aren’t happy and to me it’s because I don’t have time to do stuff that makes me happy. I feel like many people have different opinions on what exactly is happiness. it is different from person to person. some people it's family or friends. others it's objects. To me, it's more of being around family and
One of those words that is commonly misinterpreted, especially in today's society. In today's society, we believe that happiness is reaching your final destination without any bumps in the road, or being rich and getting everything you want. This is simply not the case; happiness is a person’s satisfaction with life on a day-to-day basis regardless of circumstances. Happiness is being happy with your daily routine and getting up everyday excited to start your day. The most common leading cause for human beings to lose their sense of real happiness is the overuse of technology.
No doubt, happiness is not having all the money or everything we want. If we had everything we could ever want "it would only be a matter of time before your expectations change.." (Acacia Parks). What makes us happy, is the work we put in not what we are given, but the journey. In other words, Defining happiness is hard, because there is not a true definition of happiness.
However, it can be categorized as being content with your place in life with what you are given. First, in order to know happiness, people have to experience countering emotions. “Happiness is being able to ride the wave of every emotion that life throws at you, knowing that you can come out the other side just a little better than what you were before because you have the skills (focus, courage, curiosity), the resources (a positive mindset), and the support structure (a community) to make that happen” stated Penny Locaso, author of “Hacking Happiness. ”Happiness is not just feeling excited and joyful 24/7, it’s more about being confident that everything happens for a reason and knowing that you are strong enough to overcome the bad things that may happen to you. Brock Bastian, a social psychologist at the University of Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences, stated, “The danger of feeling that we should avoid our negative experiences is that we respond to them badly when they do arise”...

Happiness is a topic that is introduced and defined through many media cognate methods, such as movies, blogs, and advertisements. The intriguing thing about bliss being portrayed through variants of media is the fact that every movie, blog, and advertisement, conveys a different definition of true happiness. Happiness can be defined differently for each person. Some individuals believe that happiness comes through leisure, sitting, relaxing, or playing video games. However, I do not agree with their idea of happiness. Personally, I believe that happiness is a result of action. People have to do things to make themselves happy, and I have experienced some situations where I had to work, exercise, or even do my homework to be happy.
2.2 Happiness Happiness is a mental or emotional state of wellbeing defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy ( Diener, 2000; Wallis, 2005). Ruchi and Ravindra (2014) defined happiness as a emotional or mental state of wellbeing characterized by pleasant as well as positive emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy where as White (2010) and Ryff (1995) emphasised happiness as a dimension of wellbeing. Religious thinkers and philosophers generally explains happiness in terms of flourshing and living a good life, rather than simply as an emotion. Happy people are healthy people.
How does someone know if they are truly happy? Much of society have come to associate happiness with the pursuits of personal pleasures or that which makes us “feels good”. When we feel good we display positive expression of emotions such as joy, laughter, kindness and fewer negative emotions such as anger, hate, and sadness. To some people our happiness is already determined through our genes. Some people seek happiness through money and material possessions.
Happiness can be defined in many different ways depending on who you are talking to. To me, it can be found listening to my favorite music with the volume turned all the way up. Through this experience I am able to immerse myself in something I truly love and be a be a better, lighter version of myself. For some, happiness is living in the moment and experiencing life as it passes, but for others it means living a life of virtue. Though happiness may look different for everyone, it is something that everyone is striving for.
I believe that happiness is more than a feeling it is the summer sun, the beach, ice cream or just whatever makes you feel good. For some people happiness is getting to eat or getting a dollar. For others it could be counting millions and riding in a Mercedes Benz. So happiness could be defined in many different meanings but there are always three things that to me define happiness very well and they are, being around the people you love, being grateful and doing good things for other people. When I am with my friends and family it’s just like no other feeling because no one understands you as they do.
Happiness is not the only emotion that brings forth satisfaction. Someone may experience feelings such as peace and joy without necessarily being happy. One’s happiness is dependent upon one’s surroundings, and it is only a temporary feeling. Joy reflects one’s inner most contentment with themselves.
