The Dinner Party is an artwork by feminist artist Judy Chicago. The piece symbolises a history of women in the Western world, while being regarded greatly as the first epic feminist artwork. Like many of the women represented in this piece, Teresa de Cartagena explores some of the earliest feminist territories while transgressing between cultures in a conservative and male dominated society. For this reason, I believe she deserves a seat at the dinner table. Teresa de Cartagena explores themes of self-knowledge, feminism and gender in her works while relaying her own personal and physical experiences through imagery and metaphors. In her first text Arboleda de los enfermos she expresses her own personal and physical experiences of dealing with her disability through dark imagery and metaphors. She wrote this piece as a consolation; finding a spiritual value in suffering and wrote it with didactic intent. In this text, Teresa expresses feelings of sadness and despair through dark imagery. It is written in epistolary form, addressing the “virtuosa señora”. Teresa wanted to share her belief to people with disabilities that the disadvantage she had in life could be wondrous once sacrificed to God. In her work, she uses rhetorical devices such as extended metaphors and use of quotations to express her feelings, but cleverly undermines herself so as not to show her intellectual superiority over the male generation; “mi mugeril ynegenio”. She showcases her intellectual power by discussing theological ideas and displaces authority onto other sources, ultimately drawing from her own personal experiences. Her emotions take material form through her imagery in this text. She explores the idea of spiritual exile as well as physical from friends and family. By quoting Isaiah 9:2, Teresa leans towards hope from the bible. She credits God with providing solace to her in her sufferings. Throughout Arboleda de los obras enfermos, Teresa de Cartagena considers her own suffering within the context of the human condition, ultimately seeing it as a blessing from God and this separates her from her fellow sufferers. Because of the intelligent and somewhat atypical ideas that Teresa expressed in her work, her authorship of the paper was called into question by outside readers, mainly by men. These doubts argued by disbelievers led to Teresa’s second work, a response entitled Admiraçion operum Dey addressed to Juana de Mendoça, the wife of famous poet Gómez
La voz a ti debida has received criticism from a number of academics for being a misogynistic work of poetry and is described as “androcentric” by Bermúdez. The theme of possession is widespread in the poem, along with the objectification of the amada, both anti-feminist elements of Salinas’s work. In addition to this, the beloved is portrayed as empty and lifeless, only acting as a hindrance to the happiness of the narrator, whether she loves him or does not. The amada’s power is only weakened by her lack of voice, taken from her by Salinas. The theme of possession is prevalent from the onset and throughout La Voz a ti Debida.
“Happiness consists in giving and in others,” (Henry Drummond). This quote effectively describes the character Clarisa in the short story, “Clarisa” written by Isabel Allende because of her giving nature and adherence for helping others. In this story, Allende depicts Clarisa as the model of affection and compassion by giving absolutely everything she owns and even spends “... the last cent of her dowry and inheritance,” (Allende, 434) and, “In her own poverty, she never turned her back on the poverty of others,”(Allender, 434). It is this very reason that she is held in high esteem and portrayed as saint like by all those who know. In Helena Maria Viramontes’ novel, Under the Feet of Jesus, Estrella starts off as angsty and confused, but then shifts to a state of contentment and understanding, caused by life experiences. These character traits are revealed through the selection of detail, figurative language, and tone. Initially, Estrella is immediately characterized as “very angry” when she finds Perfecto’s “foreign” toolbox. She uses a tone of confusion that illustrates her unfamiliarity with the objects in the tool box by using words such as “funny-shaped”, and using a simile comparing her confusion with the tools to the alphabet which Estrella “could not decipher”.
In the except from the novel “ Under the feet of Jesus” by Helena Maria Viramontes shows the development of Estrella from being angry to understanding what she needed to do to succeed. The author uses figurative language and selection of detail to show the changes Estrella’s character went through, which reveals that knowing what things are is beneficial. The author uses figurative language like similes and metaphors to show Estrella’s frustration with her teacher and her understanding of tools. The author says, “ all that a jumbled steel inside the box… seemed as confusing and foreign as the alphabet she could not decipher.”
Author – Lynda Hull is the author of the poem “The Night Waitress”. Hull had been developing an impressive career in Literature when she died in a car accident. She was influenced heavily by Hart Crane, she had allegedly memorized his poems, as well as jazz musicians. Hull taught English in many universities and also served as Poetry Editor for a journal.
In the short story, “Mericans”, written by Sandra Cisneros, there are many underlying conflicts that surface throughout the story. The conflicts, in short, evolve around two very distinguished cultures. Furthermore, the clashing views regarding the two cultures cause a great amount of problems for many individuals in a society. The cultural differences can tremendously affect a society, as the clashing views can lead to a wide array of issues such as ethnocentrism, gender discrimination, stereotypes, as well as the health of many personal relationships. Cisneros begins to develop this conflict when the story’s narrator, Michele, describes the altar to La Divina Providencia in which the “awful grandmother” worships.

She wrote the letter to inform Sor Filotea who was trying to silence her that she would not go still into the night.
In How to Tame a Wild Tongue, Gloria Anzaldua uses rhetoric and personal anecdotes to convey and persuade her argument that Latin Americans are forced to relinquish their cultural heritage, and to conform to white society. The evidence she provides comes in a variety of platforms, both literal and rhetorical. Rhetorical, being through emotional, logical, and credible appeals through her text. Literal being explicitly stated, without any further analysis necessary. When she utilises the modes of appeals, they are subtle within the texts, which leads the reader to analyse as they read.
Juana Barraza is a serial killer in Mexico. She was born on December 27, 1958 in Hidalgo, Mexico. As a child she had a thought life. Her mother Justa Samperio an alcoholic woman would exchange her to a man called Jose Lugo for a couple of beer. Barraza was sexually abuse; as a result she became a mother at the age of 13.
In Maria Viramontes’ Under the Feet of Jesus Estrella is a confused, angry girl who is attempting to figure everything out. Estrella is unable to figure anything out without the help of Perfecto Flores, but with his help she is able to create some understanding about the importance of education and becomes less angry. Viramontes uses tone and figurative language to help show Estrella’s growth and development. The beginning of the passage has an angry tone.
She was a Spanish Nun who also wrote poetry is her journal. Her poetry inspired many people and is still relevant today. The piece “Nada te Turbe” was very responsive for the people of the time. During the time period of St. Teresa of Avila many reparations and Wars of Religions were occurring. “Nada Te Turbe” was written as a prayer for the people during the time.
While both sex and sibling behavioral issues aren’t often related to cooking, both Elaine Magarrell and Sally Croft are able to integrate these themes into their poems. In both of the poems “The Joy of Cooking”, by Elaine Magarrell, and “Home Baked Bread”, by Sally Croft, the authors use different types of imagery and figurative language in order to convey a completely different idea through the art of cooking. Both authors use rather explicit ideas and themes in their writing, and use remarkable figurative language and imagery in order to convey their themes. The poem “Home-Baked Bread” is an obvious play on words.

Live outside of labels we so often stick upon ourselves and allow your individuality to change the world around you.” (unknown). This quote by an unknown person shows how you shouldn’t allow the modern stereotypes of gender define or affect you because men and women can have just as much self control as the other.
