Traditions are that of old family tells and stories from our grandparents and great grandparents, as they get passed on to generation after generation they tend to develop and modify to help aid who the stories are being told to and allow that person to benefit from them as the situation develops. This is very common in most ethnicities, however in the Chinese tradition it is important to listen and follow these talk-stories as their elders are telling them. In the memoir, The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts by Maxine Hong Kingston, Kingston establishes a relationship between silence and finding ones voice through the talk-stories and Chinese traditions she encounters that truly forms her perspective on finding her own identity as a Chinese American. In the beginning of the memoir, Kingston started off with a story about her father’s aunt that had brought disgrace to his side of the family and to which they now no longer speak of her. Furthermore, Kingston’s mother begins to explain in detail of how her aunt committed suicide along with killing her own newborn. Kingston has rarely seen independent woman and they seem to be very happy every time she’s encountered one. Kingston dreams of one day being able to be like the happy independent woman in the pictures. “A job and a room” seems so simple, but in a life where Kingston is told she can be a wife or a slave this seems like quite the luxury. Exploring Identity Through Silence: The Role of No-Name Woman in Woman Warrior Maxine Hong Kingston opens The Woman Warrior with the tale of her nameless aunt, a woman who has been silenced and forgotten by her village after giving birth to an illegitimate child, known only as the “no name woman” (Kingston 7). On the night that “no name woman” gives birth, villagers raid her family house to “show her a personal, physical representation of the break she had made in the ‘roundness’” (13). She later commits a “spite suicide” (19), drowning both herself and her child. The No-Name Woman serves as an embodiment of silence that allows the narrator to imaginatively develop her story, as well as her identity.

“Cultural Baggage” by Barbara Ehrenreich explains the author’s views on traditional values that come from family ancestry. Ehrenreich’s motivation to write about this subject came from the way she was raised and challenged. She grew up finding new things to try and not to succumb to the mindset of accepting something because it’s always been that way. Ehrenreich’s father said in the essay, ‘“think for yourself’ and ‘always ask why’” (Ehrenreich, 04 Apr. 1992).
She explains how she was writing about a history that was hidden deep in the shadows of the darkest alleys; it was the most intimate form of research (Chamberlin 2). Furthermore, because Yuh was able to meet these Korean military brides through personal connections, she was very much treated like a surrogate daughter of the community that allowed for deep ethnographic observation (Wu (c) 1). Moreover, as the interviews focused on the experiences of the Korean women, there was a chance to focus primarily on their perspectives without the possible distracts of zooming out if there were inclusions of the husbands or children (Wu (b) 3). Through the interviews, formal and informal, as well as ethnographic observation as a surrogate daughter, Yuh brought the stories of the Korean military brides to life where they shared their hardships and joyful times, showing that they were able to find content in their lives in the United
Across the world, traditions are carried throughout many communities, and when others try to change these said traditions, there is typically backfire and disagreement. In the short story “Dead Man’s Path” by Chinua Achebe, the same background is used to fuel the story’s plot. Although it is believed that keeping certain traditions alive will prevent people from changing with the times, these traditions must still be respected and appreciated for keeping past generations alive. The plot of the story follows a new headmaster of a school named Obi who has plans of implementing changes to the school.
In Anne Fadiman’s book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, two cultures clash with each other in the struggle to save Lia Lee, a Hmong child refugee with severe epilepsy. Although Lee and her family live in the United States, and thus receive medical care from Westerners, her family believes that Lee’s condition is sacred and special. The following miscommunications, both culturally and lingually, between the American doctors and the Lee family leave Lia Lee in comatose at the end of the book. However, Lia Lee could have been saved if the Lee’s had a better understanding of the American doctors’ intentions, and the American doctors understood the Hmong culture. Essentially, the tragedy of Lia Lee can be attributed to the clash of American and Hmong cultures at both the surface and sub-surface level.

She tells the story of her childhood by intertwining Chinese talk-story and personal experience, filling in the gaps in her memory with assumptions. The Woman Warrior dismantles the archetype of the typical mother-daughter relationship by suggesting that diaspora redefines archetypes by combining conflicting societal norms. A mother’s typical role in a mother-daughter relationship is one of guidance and leadership. Parents are responsible for teaching a child right from wrong and good from evil.
