I am pleasantly surprised by what I have learned in the Profiles of Business Leadership class. What I have learned so far is beyond my imagination. I recently left a family run corporation. The founder of the company wanted to make sure his family always had a job. Family members were given preferential treatment. If you weren’t a family member it was difficult to get ahead. It was so frustrating feeling that I had no future there. I left to pursue my master’s degree and hopefully find a place I could advance. I remember feeling jealous of the security and the opportunity available to the family members. I have learned in this class that every situation has its good and bad. We all have a legacy. She had a son while she was young. She escaped an abusive relationship and worked to improve her life. To support her son, she started in the insurance business as a file clerk. She showed up ready to work and learn anything she could about the business. She worked her way up in the industry to be the first woman senior officer at the Workers Compensation Fund (“WCF”). She has greatly improved the reputation and the bottom line of the WCF. Peggy shared her life story with us. It was personal and from the heart. She shared her personal and professional struggles in a way that helped me to see myself as a leader. I had a difficult childhood and I often hold myself back because I feel different.
