Andy’s behavior greatly affects other prisoners. He gives other inmates the opportunity to an education, reminds them what it's like to be free, and changes them as a person. With Andy winning over the warden through his financial skills, he manipulates the warden into letting him build a bigger and better library for the inmates. Andy discovered the other prisoners “hunger for information”(25). Previously, the library was much smaller but with Andy becoming a head librarian it expanded; an inmate could find just about ]anything they wanted. Andy opened the eyes to many inmates showing them that they can achieve something much bigger than a life sentence during their time in prison. Andy’s personality never changes throughout his time in Shawshank,
He shows us the beatings, the rapes, Telephone Treatment, and how the trustees worked with the administration and other prisoners to help manufacture the injustice that the inmates experienced. We learn a lot of things through this movie that have helped shape criminal justice reform. First, we learn that most prisoners want to do their time and be left alone. Secondly, we learn that a lot of the horror stories about rape, rotten food, and unsanitary conditions are true in this revelation. Thirdly, is the monetary bartering system whether it be cash, cigarettes, sexual favors or other options to furnish a supply demand system in prison.
Andy is not afraid to face consequences if they occur, as long as he gets a reward at the end. This is significant because his bravery enables him to go to great adventures. Therefore, as he bravely continues to do new things, his life
Throughout the book, Andy goes through many things in life such as his best friend, Robert Washington, dying in a tragic accident. His friend groaned, “Andy! Andy! Help me… Help me … Oh God, please don’t let me die like this!
Similarly, Shawshank Redemption depicts two imprisoned men who bond with one another, finding support and redemption through acts of mutual decency. The inspiring idea of hope in Shawshank Redemption and 127 hours is portrayed by both visual and verbal film techniques. Andy Dufrense, an innocent man unlawfully imprisoned with two life sentences for the murder of his wife and her devotee. Andy endeavours to provide hope in small physical expressions to remind prisoners what freedom is like: beer, music and a library.
Eventually, Red got out on parole, and it was the hope that Andy brought to Shawshank that kept him going on the outside. In this story, Andy was the most hopeful person in Shawshank, but he was also sensible towards the notion of risk and reward. Despite being a
Andy Dufresne decided to tunnel out of Shawshank prison and escape with the wardens money, because he was locked up for something he did not do, Andy knew that he was not getting out, not if the warden could help it. Andy knew he had to do something, he knew what he was going to do the night he engraved his name on the wall, he knew that he was innocent and that he had to give himself the freedom that was wrongfully taken from him. This is how Andy deals with the death of his freedom, he escapes and takes the wardens money to give himself his freedom. If I were in a similar situation to Andy, I would tunnel out of Shawshank if I knew I was innocent and I would take the wardens money. I would do this because free people should not be treated like guilty ones, and if you are in a situation where they will keep you locked up no matter what you have to do what you have to do in order to free
With time, the scenes became brighter, slowly and gradually throughout Andy’s stay at Shawshank. Andy brought hope to the prison and we began seeing and feeling this throughout the film with the use of lighting. This can be best exemplified by the well-known rooftop scene, where Andy “buys” some of his fellow inmates a moment of freedom. As they sipped a cold beer on a hot spring day in 1949, they tasted the freedom and hope that they craved ever so much, and this was all thanks to Andy. We could see the mood change through the lighting, as it was a spring day.
When Andy is consistently denied by the government for funding to build a new library in Shawshank prison, Andy remains persistent and continues to write letters in hopes the government would change its mind. Red comments: “Prison time is slow time. Sometimes. It feels like stop-time. So you do what you can to keep going …”
A short time after Andy is sent to Shawshank Penitentiary he is selected, along with Red and their group, to re-tar the roof of one of the buildings. One day after the selection he overhears Captain Hadley talking about how
Andy eventually begins to fit in, after wowing the guards with his banking expertise Andy gets a new life in shawshank, a life as "a convicted murderer who provides sound financial planning". With his new connections Andy has the opportunities nobody before him really had, he was able to create a real library within the prison, play music over the speaker, and even got his new friends some cold beers. This is not your typical prison movie with riots and constant violence, sure it has its gruesome moments but overall it tells a very gentle story of camaraderie, and how one man can make a difference. Without giving any spoilers I would have to say from start to finish this movie had me hooked, it had comedy, suspense, and even some action. Without the excellent acting of Warden Norton (Bob Gunton) and Captain Hadley (Clancy Brown) I would not have had anything to cheer on Andy against.
In Steven King’s Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, strong examples of injustice are seen throughout. Injustice is strongly displayed by the wardens, especially Warden Norton. The reader gets a sense of his hypocrisy, but it is not the focus of his character. In the film adaptation of this book, Frank Darabont changed the number of wardens, his and Andy’s first meeting, the nature of Tommy’s departure from the prison, and the existence of the fake identity Randall Stevens. All of these changes served to fully expose Norton’s character, creating a stronger theme of hypocrisy in the prison system Andy rebels against.
It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away and for the briefest of moments every last man in Shawshank felt free.” The most attractive thing in the movie is the symbols. Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe large posters on the wall of Andy’s prison cell represent the outside world that he can’t reach. I believe it is a kind of encouragement for him to escape and free himself. Bible for the movie demonstrates the necessity of atonement and redemption.
Andy can somewhat fit the role of Center but not quit he does curry favors with the guards and try’s to follow prison procedures. I saw Red as the merchant or peddler in during the film you see Red calls himself real sears and roebuck. That he can get you anything within reason favors for getting things like posters, movies cigarettes. Red engaged in the underground market of the prison for goods and services to other inmates to make his life and the life of his friend easier and to get respect form the other
Andy successfully gave the other men an opportunity to feel like free men in a prison. He is showing that the prison can’t take away his hope, and he can still feel like a free man within the prison. In the movie, Darabont immensely used light, to the point where the background was all white. The convicts were all smiling and laughing, pouring with happiness. The light from the sun went right through Red’s beer bottle, as if he is drinking in the hope and happiness.
The Shawshank Redemption is a movie about an innocent man named Andy who is wrongly convicted to life in prison for the murder of his wife and her secret lover. When he is sent to prison he gains a reputation for being a quiet, peace-loving man rather than morally corrupt like the other inmates. Through small acts of kindness, hope, and endurance, Andy gains his redeeming freedom.
