This website owned by American Legislative Exchange Council provides detailed information about the entity stressing that the agency’s mission is to limit government and promote the free market theory. The website self-proclaims that the agency hosts one quarter of all legislators in the country and provides each member a seat at the table with business leaders to discuss how to spread their mission through policy. The website promotes a “model policy library” where member legislators can obtain a bill on a particular topic that has been researched and debated, modify the bill to fit their state’s needs, and present in the legislative session. The author then quotes the House Republican spokesman Steve Miskin who adamantly defended ALEC’s intent with the “model legislation” and blamed the extreme liberals for creating a crisis with ALEC to blame. This article highlights the controversy revolving around ALEC in one particular state outside of Indiana and the internal politics associated between party
To no one’s surprise, most Americans are aware that education is a necessity in life. Not only does it allow one to further their knowledge, but it can offer freedom from anything holding them back, like poverty. A bar graph statistic from the Congressional Budget Office found that people with their Master’s degree between ages of 45-54 years old make $130,000, whereas high school graduates between the same ages only make about $70,000 (Dent). Even though America offers some of the best education in the world, many do not realize the impact that social class has on one’s education. Whereas most other nations fund their schools equally, America spends much more on the more affluent districts.
Now that lobbyists cannot utilize earmarks, traditionally the most direct way for a member of Congress to do a lobbyist’s bidding, because of the informal ban in Congress on earmarks, lobbyists are no longer receiving this kind of direct funding for their projects. Nonetheless, the presence of lobbyists will not fade. Lobbyists serve a vast array of interests, and reflect the diversity of the United States in what they represent. Today lobbyists are more powerful than ever, attempting to buy influence on issues, and are also more accountable than ever before. Allen concludes with asserting that since lobbyists represent interests at least some Americans hold, Americans cannot think that lobbyists are the
Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” (Education). Education is a crucial making an intelligent and prosperous world. Every person is entitled to an equal education, deserving to be taught and have the ability to learn at the same beneficial level as any other person. However, the disparity between what some have for a school and what others have for schools that far surpass the others is unacceptable. Children in the United States are not getting the education they deserve to receive.
In conclusion, these authors have described a legislative process that we were not taught in school. They describe a legislature that uses unique means to get their policies passed instead of what we were told where the legislature compromises to get legislation passed. Representatives also use unique ways to exploit their offices to get elected/reelected. This includes how they present themselves to their constituents and what they say to them. But the authors also explain how representatives behave in Washington.
A major issue in American politics today is the issue of school funding and how schools should be funded. In the current funding system for American public schools, nearly half of the funding comes from local property taxes. This causes disparity among schools in wealthier areas compared to poorer areas. The faults in this system has caused a large group of people to fight for equal funding in public schools to allow for fair and equal public schooling. In the article “Unfinished Business: The Legacy of Brown v. Board of Education”, written by William C. Hubbard, he states that “We have to stop tolerating separate and unequal schools in this country today, and we must reenergize public education in America through equitable funding.

Throughout history schools have served an important purpose; they aim to educate children and improve society by giving children the necessary skills needed to make advancements when they become old enough to make contributions. Although, schools are often criticized, by politicians, parents and in some cases the general population, for not serving their purpose properly. Often the people making these judgements are unaware of what is needed in schools. Society has been making judgements towards the education system for centuries and in some instances, it has been for the better. The thought behind the purpose of schooling hasn’t evolved as much as it has been broadened to include the vast majority of the population and along the way it has

Sixty-two years ago, through Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka, the Supreme Court determined that separate was not equal and since that decision, “the only tried, tested, and cost-effective solution to unequal and inadequate education is integrated education.” (Black 2013) Armed with the knowledge that ethnic, academic, and economic stratification still exists throughout the educational system in the United States the debate can shift away from whether school choice is good or bad to how we can better meet the goals of public education with broader school choice in place. School choice programs generally focus on the individual rather than society as a whole, potentially undermining the public education goals of social mobility and social cohesion. In order to justify the use
If you were to change something about the education system in the U.S, what would you change? How would you critique the quality of education? Education historian Diane Ravitch answers these questions in her excerpt that was published in 2014, “The Essentials of a Good Education.” In her text Ravitch argues that the education system is flawed and that the vision of a good education is unfair and unequal. Ravitch supports her claim by providing examples of the negative effects of the educational system and using historical context.
My research paper will be focusing on the HPA (Hypothalamus-Pituitary Gland-Adrenal Gland) axis activation in response to stress with a focus on the harmful side effects of the end product of the HPA axis, cortisol hormone. I would also like to bring to attention how stress response can vary in different individuals with certain predisposition that can cause them to have severe physical responses to stress later in life, such as diabetes and cardiac health issues. My lens will be focusing on how college students, in particular, cope with stress while highlighting which coping methods they are using and evaluating how effective they are. ALEC is a powerful group ran by an organization of politicians and corporations. Together this already can cause corruptions as these two groups can work together in their benefit in private organizations through profit and not by helping out the people. For example one corporation in ALEC is the Correction Corporations in America (CCA). This group owns private prisonment and does not have plans to aid people in rehabilitations while having their own agenda which is by benefitting themselves. This corporation made 1.7 billion dollars in profit as they earn money as they add people to their facility.
America’s educational institutions continue to evolve in order to provide “the one best system” that will benefit students in their present and future educational endeavors. The One Best System written by David B. Tyack, interprets the challenges and criticisms of America’s beginning formal education institutions as well as discusses how the solutions were used to perpetuate existing power structures and social classes to shape education entirely. As the idea of educating America’s children began to spread, schools were viewed as a community due to the tightly knit groups that were formed among individuals. Community members believed that educational institutions were an opportunity for social amusement as they provided social contact with
As Americans, we view the Constitution as a stepping stone to making the great country we live in today. Yet, we the people of the United States failed to realize another component in order to form a perfect union. Which is to establish and promote equal opportunities for a quality education for all. However, we live in a society where social locators such as class, gender, and race are huge factors in the determination of one’s educational future.
