As a former AP Lang student, I feel that this class has been very beneficial for me in that it has allowed me to apply the techniques and strategies I learned last year toward more relevant subjects. Having the freedom of choosing topics to write about for our various essays made this class more enjoyable than the other English classes that I have taken. AP Lang focused heavily on the techniques of writing solid essays, but instead of writing about useful topics, we analyzed the short stories provided on the exams. Writing a personal narrative essay was very helpful in my college application process and allowed me to employ the same kind of strategies that I learned in class into my college essays. Likewise, creating a cover letter taught me many useful strategies that I will definitely put to use when it comes time for me to submit an official cover letter to a company. One of the biggest things that I have learned from taking this course is that good content is more important than sophistication. Both are very important in essay writing, but it is more important to have clear content and material so that the audience can understand your position. Last year, I always seemed to lose points on essays for not having sophisticated enough prose, so I came into this class under the impression that the most important things in a …show more content…
In my argument essay, I tried to voice a strong opinion, but fell short. Although our process analysis essays and cover letters haven’t been graded yet, I believe that I portrayed a more confident tone and style in those than I did in my argument essay. While writing those particular essays, I focused more on meeting the requirements sufficiently and voicing my opinion effectively. I believe that gaining this kind of insight on essay-writing is a reflection of improvement in my writing skills and overall
AP classes are said to be very hard, of course very challenging, and that they suck the living life out of you. However, regardless of that, I still choose it, because I believe that the more of writing skills you have, the better. I can’t have enough of English skills, because there is always something I can improve on. With all the different literary techniques, I can write better essays.
At the beginning of the AP Language and Composition course, my writing skills were primarily weak due to the fact that I would state several claims in my essays without providing warrants or backing. Being introduced to Toulmin’s chart gave me step by step directions on how to improve my score on essays simply by providing evidence to my claims. Another issue I had in my writing was that I was stating too many generalizations throughout my essay. For example, on an essay about my position on the background of criminals, my thesis would’ve most likely been something like “not all criminals come from a troubled background.” I have now learned to explain my claims in a more specific manner by addressing why I believe in my thesis, and provide hard evidence behind it to convince my audience that my claim is
I do realize I have a lot to learn but anytime I write better than I did the essay before that is a success. So, to any future students if you are here every day and participate you will be successful this class is organized to make sure when you start writing the essays you are well prepared from all the invention techniques. I feel my style has broadened because every essay I write feels easier and more professional. My attitude about writing is better as well I am no longer afraid of writing an essay or communicating via email with another professor or some other professional resource.
1. Students are expected to score an 85% or better on their Unit 4 assessment scheduled for 10/28. 2. Teachers are utilizing various strategies to ensure students comprehend the writing process and the traits of writing as it pertains to writing an argument. 3.
The day I received my letter acknowledging my passing the APMLE Part I is the day I officially started my 3rd year. My first two years were mainly dedicated to academia, but my third year is dedicated to my clinical knowledge and finding a niche for myself in the podiatric world. However, clinical rotations at community-based clinics have guided me in the right direction of participating in patient-centered care. In addition to successfully graduating from CSPM, I intend to further sub-specialize in Public Health.
Over the course of English 1302 at Texas Tech, I feel that my skills as a writer improved significantly. When beginning the class, I knew little about writing a literature review or researched argument. With the help of my instructor’s lectures and the University Writing Center, I was able to effectively get my point across effectively while forming a well developed and well spoken manner. The advice given to me about argumentative essays and integrating sources helped significantly over the course of this class, and the skills learned in English 1302 helped me in other classes this semester when writing as well. One of the things I have learned that influenced me the most was my professor’s advice about an argument.
The weekly reading assignments were very helpful. Some of the topics were great refreshers of common mistakes made when writing; these knocked some of the cobwebs in my mind loose. The other topics with sample writings gave me an idea of what to do. The instructor feedback and the revision recommendations were probably the most helpful tools in my composition process.
When I asked my upperclassmen friends last year about their opinions on AP Language, these were the responses I got: “AP Language will be the death of you”, “Whatever you do in your junior year, don’t take Lang”, “It’s not worth it”, “My hardest class is AP Language”. I was told all the horror stories of annotations, timed writes, and portfolios last year as I was trying to decide if I should enroll in AP Language and Composition. However, I decided to challenge myself and push myself out of my comfort zone, so I nervously enrolled for the class in January of 2017. This semester I learned that while this class was indeed a challenging course, it has pushed me to improve not only my writing skills, but also my work ethic.
I found out that I loved novels that somehow tied into life happening all around me. I learned how to visualize what I was reading and ask questions that helped me dive deeper into my own way of thinking. As far as AP English being a bad experience I was pushing the envelope a little bit. It was a bad experience because I made it one. I was not aware of how much work it would take to be in an AP English class.
Looking back over the time and hard work that I have put into this course I realize that it was very helpful. Throughout the course, English 1002, I learned many new techniques that would help me achieve the goal of correctly writing a college level research paper. The most difficult task that I encountered during the course was writing the works cited page of the essay. It took a little time but eventually I began to understand the process. There were a few different research topics that we had to write about during the course but the most interesting to me was the community research paper.
However, I also do want to master the skills that we are taught. These skills will be crucial in college, and not paying attention to them in high school will drastically affect me. I realized over winter break the importance of AP Lang; this class teaches you skills that you will for sure use in your future. The argument branch of AP Lang helps with both speaking and writing. The rhetorical analysis branch helps us understand the motive of the author and the author’s true feelings towards the subject.
I was looking on Seattle Community Colleges website for ASL 2. I found that either they were not permitting ASL 2 during summer or they do not have their summer schedule up yet. However, I did find that University of Washington might have ASL 2 during the summer. I found myself in quite a pickle because I am unable to confirm my summer courses even though the studied away application was due yesterday. I quickly sent in mine after realizing however, I feel I lack the information to truly fill it out.
This class has helped me learn my weakness and strengths. The comments that are left in my essays help me know what to fix for the next essay and gives me a clear idea on what to work on. I think my weakness is not knowing the grammar rules not knowing how to proofread my essays and English being my second language. Learning to speak English was hard for me especially since in my home we only speak Spanish. I do not get to practice my English at home
Many people were unsure of what they were doing as well so I did not receive much feedback on my drafts. Looking back on this, I feel like more drafting as well as conferencing with a teacher would have helped me immensely. The expository essay was about how someone else argued and how they boosted their credibility during it, but now it was my turn to
I knew my writing skills were not amazing, but I did not think I would learn anything more in such a class. I was so wrong. Since I began at DePaul, I have been dumped with an amount of work that I was not accustomed to. I found myself constantly reading, writing more, and considering literature in unconvential methods, such as a photo essay. This was fine and completely acceptable to me, I simply had to adjust to college and a shorter quarter system.
