Greek Mythology is composed of the many gods, deities, and mythological creatures the ancient Greeks had worshiped and formed religions upon. One of the most worshiped of the Greek gods was Apollo, son of Zeus and Leto. Although Apollo is best known for being the Greek god of arts, prophecy, and healing, he is also known for the role of women in society and mythological influence on the modern world. Apollo was considered to be one of the most worshiped and important gods within Greek mythology and religion, being known as the god of prophecy, arts (music and poetry), healing, archery, the sun, and, to primitive shepherds, the god of flocks and pastures. Being the god of arts and music, Apollo was a favored subject within Greek literature and art. Apollo's first known appearance within Greek literature was in Homer's epic, "the Lliad". Apollo had also been the subject of many statues and artworks that portray him as the perfection of male beauty. Apollo's character has been portrayed and inspired through numerous artworks and literary work throughout history, his myth being spread throughout most of Europe. More recently, and arguably more notably, NASA had named a series of moon landings after Apollo, continuing the widespread of the god of the arts throughout the modern world. Apollo's main influences revolve around the arts of music and poetry, having Apollo be depicted as constantly holding a lyre, putting emphasis on his role of god of music. (UXL 88-93) Thus it can be seen that Apollo had both an impact on women in society and mythological influence on the modern world. Apollo was the Greek god of arts, healing, prophecy, and the sun and as a result became a popular subject within Greek mythology, religion, and literature.
