Has baseball lost its cool? Baseball is a very popular sport in America although there is very much controversy on whether it is fading away or still thriving strong in America. Baseball has been around since 1839. The sport has evolved very much over the past 178 years. The game has always been thought to be “Americas Pastime” but in modern society some people believe that may not be the case. Is baseball Americas Pastime? It is a huge debate that has been developing over the past ten to twenty years. Although baseball is thought to be Americas favorite sport, The World Series is the third most watched sporting event which trails behind both football and soccer. Baseball may not be the most watched sport but the sales in popular baseball movies in the past thirty years can also prove its popularity. Baseball can be extremely boring at times because there are rarely any great plays made and for the most part it is not very action packed. Baseball does not have much physical contact which most people enjoy in today’s society, this also drives people away to a contact sport. The game of baseball is very long and can be five to six hours at time with little action, this can be extremely hard to endure (Foxsports 1). Scoring is very limited in games unless it is a blowout. Baseball has been around forever and some people do not understand how tough the sport is. First I will explain how hitting a baseball is the toughest thing to do in sports. Then I will explain how tough it is to play in the field.

America has always had a deep connection with sports. Starting in 1839, America began its love affair with what is now deemed America’s favorite pastime, baseball. Beginning in Cooperstown, New York it quickly spread across the country creating a community around the team. Baseball came to Connecticut in 1874 when Hartford had an early major league team that shifted into several minor league teams that still exist today. While baseball is taking off in Hartford, a city just outside of Hartford is forming.
In his opinion, baseball’s situation is not as bad as everyone is making it out to be. According to the data, the difference in popularity between football and baseball is steadily declining while the split between baseball and basketball is steadily rising. For example, 56% of Americans do not follow basketball compared to the 47% who do not follow baseball. Even though baseball suffers from long game times, young people age 18-29 watch baseball more closely than basketball. This statistic contradicts the common belief that young people do not find baseball interesting.

During the Mexican - American war, people spent their free time mostly playing baseball. Imagine a day in the life minor league baseball player. In a typical day, they do so much for nothing. In the morning they get up and make a quick breakfast, they eat it on the go and continue with their day. They get into their car and go straight to the field where they see their teammates getting ready for their warm up. They throw some ball and they start to talk with their coach and see what the plan for the upcoming practice will be.
The scent of hot dogs, the crack of the ball off the bat, and umpires hollering “strike” are just a few memories one will have after attending a baseball game. America’s game is filled with many sensory details, which is why it is so appealing to many spectators, as well as players. The massive fences in the outfield seem daunting up close; the players seem to whip the ball effortlessly, but with extraordinary speed. Spectator’s noses will be filled with baseball smells such as sunflowers seeds, which everyone seems to be chewing, or the perfume of fresh cut outfield grass. The home fans will be cheering with optimism despite the score.
