Opening Statement: Is college worth the investment? Is a question that everyone has to face at some point in their life. But not a lot of people truly consider the question. Most people think they have no choice but to go to college. My name is Ava Gershenhorn, and I am here today to show you all that there is a choice. I am here to tell you why I believe college is a bad investment. Cost has to do with a huge part of it. Besides the debt that everyone gets into, the cost is making people rethink their decisions to go to college. People are dropping out of college, with one of the main reasons being the cost. Now, I don’t believe education to be the problem here, but the way college is doing it is making many people wonder if their thousands of dollars should be spent on this cause. The second thing is value. Why should this college be worth my time and money? Is this school going to teach me enough to where it is worth every cent I am paying? Some of the most successful people, people like Benjamin Franklin, Steve Jobs, and Oprah Winfrey dropped out of college in the first semester of their freshman year. Many people argue if going to college is worth it or not. They question if the decision of investing Their time and money on college is going to be the right decision for them. Will it payoff with success, and leaving them richer than an average highschool graduate?. Well in David Leonhardt’s “Is College Worth It? Clearly, New Data Say” and Chris Matthews’s “Why college isn't for everyone, explained in a single chart”, They both talk about that, if college is worth it or not.
Being that America is still in an economical downward spiral, college has gone from being the place where one can reach their their dreams to a place that you will be paying for most of your adult life. There are many people that believe it is a waste of time to go to college because majority of the time you are not going to use your degree and you will still have to pay thousands of dollars over the course of your adult life. Many people believe that it is better to go to a trade school because it is somewhat guarantee that you will have a job working in your field of choice.
Why College isn 't Worth the Cost When you grow up, you get pressured into believing that college is the only way to succeed. However,there are other options unless you want to waste your time and money on something that you 're not so sure about in the future. College is not worth the money you’re supposed to pay for. Attending a decently ranked university can easily cost upwards of $100,000.” Some People thought of not spending money on college but to go skip and go straight forward into life. But what I’ve seen in the success of college, are things that you earn and get rewarded for and you live life way easier. There is more to it than just getting a great job and getting more money after you graduate from college.
people in the 21st century think that in order to be successful one should spend thousands on a college degree and spend four to eight more years in school. For example in the article it states “Construction workers, police officers, plumbers, retail salespeople and secretaries, among others make significantly more with a degree than without one. why? education helps people do higher skilled work, get jobs with better paying companies and open their own business” (Source, D). Since many people believe that getting a degree helps you make more money, here is an example to refute that piece of evidence.
The Financial Cost of a College Education The cost of a college education has become a determining factor in whether or not people choose to continue their education after high school. The cost of college is so expensive that very few people are able to pay for their education “as they go”; students are being overwhelmed with student-loan debt. The prospect of student-loan debt shouldn't be driving people away from a college education. The cost of a college education in the United States is unaffordable.
These studies have proved that college is not worth it in the long run. College graduates are beginning to have high expectations on their wages earned. New college students are losing ground on wages by the time they graduate. Many are working hard to earn a degree, going into debt, making sacrifices financially. But, the lack of wage growth is affecting them after college.
College is one of the most important and life changing times in the life of an American. Leaving high school behind and venturing out to the adult world is an amazing experience that every individual should experience. However, young adults from every corner of the country leave college with crippling debt or do not go to their preferred college of choice. Rotherham’s article “Actually, College Is Very Much Worth it. ”he states, “Meanwhile, in 2010, the unemployment rate was 9.2 percent for those with only some college and more than 10 percent for those with just a high school degree, but it was 5.4 percent for college graduates.” The data Rotherham provides shows that even with some college education, you have a higher chance of getting employed than those with just a high school degree. The one group that outweighs all the others is the college graduates proving that with a college degree unemployment is less likely to befriend people who do pursue college. Some people might say that there are loads of jobs that do not require a college degree, especially in this time and age.
When it comes to the topic of going to college, most of us will readily agree that college will be worth the cost. However, is it really? My own view is that college is not worth it. Ultimately, it’s a waste of time, salary increases aren’t keeping up with the wage growth, and just way too much money.

College education can assist in achieving some types of achievement. (Berger, 2013)However, it makes little or no difference whether the individual is successful or not in other life areas. Some professions such as medicine, law, engineering and teaching require college education.

Why People Should Not Go to College People should not go to college because is difficult to find out what career choice as a result of the inexperience and little information, the potential loans are overwhelming, and the huge necessity to start working immediately after school. In fact, many high school students go to college because it is expected of them, but that is not a good reason to go. If the students are facing pressure from their parents, friends, or teachers to attend college, but they do not feel ready. A person who wants to attend college should not take on such a large financial and time commitment just to please other people. College is expensive, and it does not make sense to spend money on a college degree if they are unsure of their path.
Although a degree is not essential for those looking to work in the more hands on fields of work, such being a plumber or an electrician, degree holders can look to not only make more, but to also fulfill more brain satisfying tasks in more intellectual fields of work.
