Keeping Marijuana Illegal. Marijuana is a drug that is used by approximately 38% in America. Recently, there has been a movement to legalize marijuana for both medical and recreational use. Some states and communities have already passed laws to legalize marijuana and many more have plans to bring legalization to a vote in the near future. While there are many arguments for why marijuana should be legalized, legalizing marijuana is the wrong choice. Marijuana is addicting, can lead to usage of other drugs and has negative impact on society. I have a child on the way and by the time he or she is old enough to know about marijuana and right from wrong, I want them to make the right decision to stay away from it and know that it’s illegal for …show more content…
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, people who smoke marijuana are 104 times more likely to smoke cocaine, and other addictive drugs, than people who don’t smoke marijuana. This is potentially very dangerous because these other drugs can have adverse reactions that are many times worse than marijuana. Cocaine, like marijuana is a stimulant, but unlike marijuana is many times stronger. Users will become addicted to cocaine much quicker and much more deeply. Legalizing marijuana will multiply the already large problem with illegal drug use. If legalized, marijuana could cause societal problems in many areas. First of all, the easy access to legal marijuana would mean that more of it would get into the hands of kids and teens. Police officers worry that we will see increased crime on the streets as marijuana lowers inhibitions and users will do whatever is necessary to feed their addiction. There are also problems with people who use marijuana and drive. Marijuana should remain illegal in the United States, and states that have passed laws to make it legal should reverse those laws. Marijuana is addictive and a gateway drug. Legalizing marijuana will make it generally more available to the public, which will also make it more likely to be used by young adults and children that are not old enough to make smart decisions regarding drug
To add, recreational marijuana is taxable! Therefore, it is money that can be put into our communities. Recreational marijuana as intimidating as some may think, can actually benefit our community in many ways. To begin, many believe legalizing marijuana would cause crime to increase, on the contrary legalizing it will lead to a decrease of crime. Imagine that getting your hands on marijuana was as accessible as cigarettes in a gas station, how many illegal cigarette dealers have been punished in jail with the maximum sentence for selling cigarettes?
Finally, marijuana should not be legalized because it is a big safety issue for the states. The quote that shows this is, "For instance, low to moderate doses distort perception that is enough to cause traffic accidents. In fact, study shows that weed is one of the most prevalent illegal drugs found in fatally injured and impaired drivers," from NYLN.org(2014). Marijuana is one of the leading causes of crimes, car accidents and other violent behaviors. It[marijuana] contains the chemical, tetrahydrocannabinol(THC), which is responsible for stimulating the CNS(central nervous system).
How amazing it is that Marijuana can make difference in a great area in our brain. In addition, the physical addiction, which means the physiological response after cut off the drugs supplies. It always appears in movies or TV shows, and it is also real in our life. However, the physical addiction of Marijuana is way lower than any other drugs. So that is one of the reasons why many people hold the idea that the government should not forbid Marijuana at
Legalizing marijuana can make the state some money and there are many benefits to it. Legalizing marijuana won’t benefit at all for the big corrupt pharmaceutical companies, if the cannabis is passed as a drug for health issues. Maybe that’s why lawmakers haven’t maybe won’t pass the law to legalize Marijuana. Yes the companies can get involved but then somehow it will get corrupt and won’t benefit the citizens.
This subject has been debated numerous times over the past few years. People’s points of view and researches about the topic have varied greatly. Some people believe that marijuana should be legalized, while the rest feel should stay prohibited. Proponents of marijuana argue that there are numerous medical benefits and that the drug is not more harmful than tobacco or alcohol. On the other hand, opponents argue that marijuana is too dangerous; its legalization would increase the chances of the drug falling into the hands of teens and that marijuana use often progresses to the use of more dangerous drugs like heroin and cocaine.
Legalizing Marijuana Marijuana is not a gateway drug and that is what I believe to this day. In today 's world there all sorts of issues with marijuana and other drug issues Prohibition against marijuana is a big deal right now. More and more states are legalizing, it may not be as fast as some people want it but they are starting off by legalizing Medical Marijuana. People that put alcohol prohibition still had people 13 years later drinking and secretly drinking.(“Repeal” SR.1)
Marijuana should be legal to obtain because statistics and scientific studies throughout the world prove that the legalization of the drug would not only make the United States safer, but also benefit the country financially. The criminalization of marijuana has dramatized a violent image of the drug which media outlets exacerbate by using scare tactics and myths. Legalizing marijuana would eliminate any unsafe or uncomfortable means that the over 100 million Americans who have admitted to using the drug currently have to go through to obtain it. This would separate violence, murder, and the sales of other deadly drugs such as cocaine or heroin from recreational marijuana use.
Legal and illegal drugs are used on a daily basis all over the world. Currently, drugs remain ranked high on the lists of concerns of Americans and are still considered one of the major problems facing our country today. We see stories almost everyday on the news about people being killed in the streets daily over drugs. To most people, drugs are only an inner-city problem, but in reality they affect all of us, people who use and people who don’t use. I believe that the negative effects we associate with drugs would be greatly reduced if the United States adopted a policy towards the total decriminalization of marijuana.
Although there is a chance for addiction, medical marijuana should be legalized in all states because it has accumulating health benefits, is administering relief to pain, and is less threatening than most opioids and
If marijuana is regulated and taxed properly, it can generate millions of dollars that can help pay the debt of the US and/or help cities rebuild a better infrastructure. Marijuana has become the third most popular drug in the US behind alcohol and tobacco. It is a renewable resource and is not just used for smoking; it can be used to make paper, oils, and cloth. Every year millions of tax dollars are being spent to enforce marijuana laws. If these laws were repealed and marijuana was legalized, we would not only make money from the marijuana, but we would also be using a lot less money to enforce marijuana laws.
I believe that marijuana should be legal for recreational purposes in the United States. This is because it would provide the United States many benefits if we were to make it legal, and the fact that it actually hurts us as a country by having marijuana illegal. If we were to make it legal, it would make the economy better. It would also bring down crime and get many people out of prison. In addition to this, it would also undo injustices done in the past.
This false perception of a lazy and unmotivated America is the result of over seventy years of propaganda and misinformation. In my opinion for many reasons, the Federal Government should legalize marijuana in all 50 states. First of all marijuana has proven to be very useful in the medical field. Many evidence based studies have shown that medical marijuana can help patients who suffer from illnesses such as AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, and many other serious terminal illnesses. The effects of marijuana have been known to greatly relieve pain that is caused by these diseases.
Students who smoke weed are inapt to getting lower grades and less likely to graduate. Workers who smoke are more likely to experience a variety of absences, problems, tardies, accidents, etc.compared to workers who don 't. Marijuana is an addictive and dangerous drug. This negative propaganda that surrounded us only allowed people to make this drug to not be able to become legal in this state today. Marijuana is also not as addictive as most media outlets would lead you to believe. There are way more addictive drugs such as, heroin, and nicotine. After nicotine and heroine comes crack, and then alcohol. Below that is caffeine, and at the very bottom of the chart is marijuana; less addictive than but yet still illegal.
The drug is a bit more acceptable in this time period because of the benefits it brings to helping to body with pain or disease and also causes relaxing effects. Many individuals believe marijuana should be legalized everywhere because it is not at all as harmful as cigarettes, which are known to have cancer causing chemicals and is also studied to be addictive. A major difference between marijuana and cigarettes is that marijuana can be used medically to assist with individuals with disease. According to Stroup (2016), it has been shown that “roughly 60% of the country today support full legalization”. A few reasons many may not be as accepting to drug because of the stories regarding “having a bad trip” or individuals dying because of the use of synthetic marijuana.
