Therefore, there are necessary measures that need to take place to gun prevention. Considering the fact that gun prevention will ensure security overall, it will also prevent many major tragedies. Gun safety needs to be deeply encouraged in US culture. This prevents unwanted deaths of Americans worldwide. Lastly, the matter of owning a gun should be limited to many. Guns wouldn't be issued to individuals and end up in the wrong hands to be misused.
Without a doubt, guns are exploited and abused on a daily basis. Consequently, many deaths occur to many people in the US. Unfortunately, they are targeted and become victims to most of these school shootings that occur.
According to the article, Ulmanu, “J.W.C.S.R.L.C.L.T.M. (2023, April 3), “There have been 380 school shootings since Columbine.” This a day-to-day occurrence is what many students have fallen victim to. Furthermore the same article states,“ More than 352,000 students have experienced gun violence at school since Columbine.”Apart from this, mental health has impacted these students immensely. Ultimately, in the process many of those children who witness the gun violence or experience it are traumatized. The fact that many kids let alone have to witness is traumatizing enough.
In accordance with this article, Surviving a school shooting: Impacts on the mental health, education, and earnings of American youth, ”Research indicates a higher rate of antidepressant use among those exposed to a school shooting in the years following the gun violence.”Apart from this, the mental health is impacted these students immensely. The effect are long lasting and extremely damaging from both parties. Undoubtedly, students are at risk with both their physical and mental health. Many communities who have children contain that fear of these outcomes. The only way to exterminate that fear is by taking
School shootings directly impact survivors, as they have an “increased incidence of a range of negative mental health outcomes, among them post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depression” (Lowe and Galea 1). The connection between school shooting survivors and increased rates of mental health disorders reveals the long-lasting consequences of school shootings on innocent children, teachers, and other faculty. These disorders can contribute to a decrease in the quality of life of the survivors, a decrease in their lifespans, and an increase in unemployment as survivors may undergo little to no motivation or an inability to function without flashbacks that leave them paralyzed. Without help, the victims remain trapped in their disorders, which prevents them from living full lives. An example of negative mental health consequences is apparent in ten-year-old Catilyne Gonzales, a survivor of the Uvalde shooting, who experiences mental health decline after hearing a shooter murder her best friends across the hall.
Suddenly this leads to the chance that the weapon could end up in the wrong hands with a student securing it or the assailant finding it and increasing his or her weapon power. Some think that innocent children would not touch a gun or know how to use it, but Ken Corbett (2013), an assistant professor of psychology at the New York University, proclaims, “Kids get their hands on guns, and they know how to use them” (para. 7). As a matter of fact, Corbett also includes a 2010 FBI homicide statistic in his article: “The most up-to-date FBI homicide data indicate that of the 1,448 children who died as a result of gun violence in 2010, 165 of those deaths were at the hands of other children” (para. 7). A little over eleven percent of those deaths were caused by other children, nonetheless, those 165 deaths could have been avoided if the guns were secured or not
In 2007, a total of 3,042 kids and teens died because of guns, and another 17,523 were injured!(Source B) [logos] [exclamation] Just think about all the young lives that were lost and how many families were broken. Many people were hindered by these bullets, and even if they weren’t, the tragic event stays within them forever. And just imagine this amount of death in your own community: if you add together all the students that attend the Los Altos School District, this includes all seven elementary schools as well as Egan and Blach, and the students from Los Altos High School and Mountain View High School, that is just half of the kids who were injured from bullet wounds in one year. Take the students at Los Altos and Mountain View High Schools alone, that is slightly more than how many people were killed in the same year.
It's how easy it is for kids to have access to firearms, to prevent grown adults from taking responsibility and having a safe in the house and not letting the kids know the
Children often grow up to have big dreams, yet they all be crumbled by the tragic events of a school shooting in seconds. This all gets ruined by one thing in their environment such as gun violence and gun violence may lead to death. This violence can destroy a kid's mindset and mold them to be someone different from what they were raised to be. While gun laws over gun control have been changing, they are still causing multiple problems for individuals such as children, and causing mental health issues for them in the future.
1,056: the number of people fatally shot or wounded on K-12 campuses in America within the last five years. We all know of the major problem facing the United States today: the increase of school shootings. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. urged safety for people of color and all people in America for over a decade in the 1950’s, yet the issue of violence and lack of safety still prevails today in different ways than in the past. Shootings in schools continue to violate students’ safety, keeping us from the peace for which Dr. King preached. With lack of support from school systems, the increase of school shootings in the US shows the result of poor mental health in students, and more accessibility to mental health help and support in
Many schools in today’s society suffer from shootings at some point while children are attending school. Shootings in schools are not a new occurrence, and America has dealt with multiple shootings in public schools in which the lives of many children and teachers have been undeservingly taken (Elliott 528). Because of school shootings, this leaves our children in danger with no way to protect themselves. Gun violence in schools is an evident problem, and there are several ways to reduce the number of incidents, such as mental health screening for owners of guns, interconnectedness of communities, and more school funding.
Gun Violence In America Gun violence in america accounted for 33,636 deaths in 2015 alone and that number is only rising. If every american was able to obtain a firearm imagine what the numbers of gun related deaths. Even gun related injuries caused many more hospital visits in america what many other common incidents. That is why america needs to implement tighter gun laws to reduce the amount of gun violence in America. Without this we will continue to see shooting, gun death, gun injuries resulting in more and more gun related violence.
Although most of us are not physically involved, our nation itself is highly affected by these incidents. Every school shootings come with a political debate between gun violence and mental health and arguing which side to blame. Whether it is because of guns, mental health, or the school’s security itself something needs to be done to limit these horrid
Guns need to be strictly controlled to fulfill the promise that was made to all of us, protection under all
Gun Control Gun control has become a polarizing and controversial issue around the globe. There have been many reported issues of mass shootings both in schools and in the public, making it a hot button issue. Proponents argue that, if the government strictly controls the ownership of guns, such tragedies can be prevented. Most Americans have an obsession with guns because the law allows them to do so. Therefore, they are always ready to scoff at anyone trying to control gun ownership.
In the past, the major gun control legislations that have been put into effect have not stopped people from obtaining firearms (Gun Control.) There have also been cases in the past where cities have attempted to ban handguns. After the ban was put into effect, murder rates tended to rise instead of drop, unlike what most people might assume. Crime rates and violence also skyrocketed after the bans were put into effect. Another problem with taking guns away, or banning them, is that the government cannot expect everyone to abide by the laws.
Gun control also limits our constitutionally derived right to own firearms. If gun control is enforced, law-abiding citizens will be forced to give up their guns and their right to own guns, while many criminals who own guns may illegally keep theirs. As the saying goes “If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” Guns are an important aspect of our society in many ways. They allow for protection, recreation, and hunting.
Guns are just a tool, like knives and hammers and it completely depends on the people on how they use it. People who support guns and arms say that the Second Amendment secures individual’s right to carry guns with them and that gun rights is needed for self-protection, and was intended for military to have peace and defend the country if needed (Spitzer, 70). Most of the Americans use guns as a source to protect themselves and they believe that gun ownership prevents crime. A study conducted on November 26, 2013 showed that bans on weapons did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level (Lane, 5). Moreover, even if the rules and regulations are executed on gun control, not all criminals obey the law.
School Shootings and Gun Control: Why We Need to Change Throughout the years, mass school shootings have become a more prevalent issue in America. But why are they occurring more often? To discover the perpetrator’s main goals and why these murders are becoming more common, it is first necessary to look at why schools are targeted. Schools are often made targets because they are largely populated institutions full of innocent children, teachers, and coaches. The shooter wants to inflict harm and pain to not only the victims, but parents, friends, family, and the nation as a whole.
