On Wednesday September 30th the House of Representatives passed a temporary spending bill. President Obama has signed that bill to avoid a government shutdown over the issue of defunding Planned Parenthood to cut spending. Planned Parenthood is the nations largest abortion provider, which is the reason why Republicans want to defund it, along with a recent video leak by anti- abortionist republicans of officials apart of Planned Parenthood discussing the illegal sale of fetal tissue. The video was said to be edited and the group denied any illegal activity. Planned Parenthood receives about twelve percent of its $528.4 million dollars from the government through grants and reimbursements from a law called Title X. Title X gives money to not only Planned Parenthood but also hospitals, schools, health departments, and other non- profits. About the other seventy- five percent of its money comes from patients they are serving insured by Medicaid. A government shutdown would mean that thousands of people working in the government would furlough if Congress did not make this decision. With only seven hours remaining till the government ran out of money, the House of Representatives passed a bill with 257 votes in favor, …show more content…
Half of the Republican Party voted for this bill and the other half voted against so there is technically a three- way split that Boehner cannot even resolve resulting in his resignation. This is all very important because both Parties have to come to an agreement by December 11th or it will result in not only a government shutdown, but the government will have to default on its debts meaning it will not be able to pay its bills. This affects all other countries and organizations we are suppose to be paying because we will not be able to pay them. This brings up the other issue of what to do with spending caps- lift them or keep
After going through committee, the Senate sent a conference report to the House for approval with amendments, which the House passed. The Senate voted on the bill the next day, passing it narrowly with the required 60 votes to waive the budget
President Obama and the conservative house lie on opposite sides of the status quo. For this reason it is hard to believe that a reauthorization will be agreed upon. We can assume that both sides will try to make changes to the bill that will move it further to the left or the right from where it sits currently; almost dead center. If it moves to the left, the republicans would rather have the current status quo because it is closer to their beliefs; just like if the new bill moves to the right, then democrats would rather have the status quo because it’s closer to
the president by majority vote for “Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors”. After going from the house, two-thirds of the Senate must approve this request within the presence of the chief justice of the Supreme Court. o There have only been two successful impeachments in the history of the United States. Andrew Johnson went against his own party in terms of policies regarding the Reconstruction era after the North won the Civil War.
In light of the recent “controversy” surrounding Bernie Sanders and Planned Parenthood, I feel that it’s necessary to point out the mans incredibly consistent record in support women’s issues and the right to choose. Bernie Sanders is a staunch believer in the fact that women should have the fundamental right to control their bodies when it comes to sexual and reproductive health. He’s received both a 0 percent rating from The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), and a 100 percent rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America. According to The NRLC, Sanders has voted against the pro-life position more than 100 times in his federal legislative career. Let me just quote a couple of things that The NRLC notes about Sanders pro-choice
Well for starters, I believe that President Trump should have had a say in this because he was a businessman, so he should know how to handle money. However, Congress had a different idea. The Congress believes that this bill could help reinforce the government and the military spending, when it really doesn’t. Due to many things, such as in the article, Troops' kids face deep cut in GI Bill housing stipend and House votes to scale back GI Bill housing stipend for military kids, by George Altman.
Today, President Trump, like President Reagan, is interested in transferring government spending on Medicaid and giving block grants to the states to control their own Medicaid programs. Many people, even some Republicans, are worried that the states, without much government intervention will cut people from the services they are receiving currently. The politicians who are in disagreement with this proposal strongly favor a more centralized government and cling tight to the original meaning of
By being a provider and educator, the organization has created a reputation as a safe, reliable source that many individuals can depend on for their health. Nearly 4 of 10 Americans are reliant on such programs and up to 25% of Planned Parenthood patients would be completely without medical insurance if the organization was defunded. Defunding Planned Parenthood was an effort put into effect in Texas of 2011 where it proved to be disastrous for both healthcare providers and their patients. The two-year budget for Planned Parenthood was cut from $111 million to $38 million, which resulted in 82 clinics closing, reduced services and supplies, and ultimately an upcharge for what was available. This resulted in a 36% decrease in IUDs and other implants and a 31% decrease in injectable contraceptives, all because it was limited, too expensive, or too difficult to receive (Willingham).
The defunding would leave women and men without health insurance due to not being able to afford it which would lead to no birth control and screenings needed to remain healthy. Also, defunding of Planned Parenthood would be a big mistake because the organization provides services for approximately 2.6 million women. Medicaid would help with cost of having babies and women with young children who qualify for welfare, but what about the services that Medicaid does not offer to men and women who do qualify for Medicaid or welfare. According to statistics, the federal government budget is 3.3 trillion and Planned Parenthood only gets 500 million, which is a drop in a bucket. The legislators have become insensitive to the needs of the less fortunate when it comes to the health and welfare of citizens.
Abortion has been performed for a long time. It was legal in the United States from the beginning it was created/founded. “At the time the Constitution was adopted, abortions were openly advertised and commonly performed. ”(History of Abortion) But in the mid-to-late 1800s some states began passing laws that made abortion illegal.
The pro-choice/pro-life is a major argument in politics in the United States today. However it is not so simple as pro-choice and pro-life. Pro-choice has been coined to mean that women should have the right to choose abortion and it should be a legal option. Pro-life has been connected with the banning of abortion and looking at a fetus as a life so abortion is basically murder. However this pro-life view has gotten very convoluted.
Henceforth the different states will determine whether to accept or decline the federal organisation funds for extensions and advance the states healthcare programs. In most cases the obamacare will negatively affect the states because the costs of healthcare will be more expensive and the rising of private insurance. This will be expensive for the people living in those states to afford the private insurance especially for those relying on employers for insurance.
Pro-Choice “77% of Anti-Abortion Leaders are men, 100% of them will never be pregnant” (Barbara Kruger). Whether to continue or end a pregnancy, has been a long debated topic, extending long after the Roe v. Wade case that went all the way to the Supreme court (ProCon). Abortion is defined as the intentional termination of a pregnancy, frequently performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy (Oxford University Press). Each year, over one million women in America chose to have an abortion (WebMD). What would happen if that right to choose was taken away?
Doris Gudino Professor Chounlamountry Political Science 1 27 July 2015 Pro-Choice Anyone? A woman has, undoubtedly, the freedom to procreate, but once a woman chooses to retreat from that freedom, a commotion arises. Abortion is a woman’s choice for many reasons. It’s her body, therefore, no one else can decide for said person.
Abortion Abortion is the ending of pregnancy by abolishing a fetus or embryo before it can survive outside the uterus. Abortion is a very controversial topic, for example, one side of this topic believes abortion is cruel and committing murder, while the other side believes that since the fetus or embryo isn 't developed enough to be considered a living human being yet, that abortion is not commiting murder. Despite this information, there is a lot more to abortion than the opinion of it being “right” or “wrong”. According to “Students for life” who are pro life, about 1 million abortions are executed each year in the US. That data adds up to 22% of pregnancies ending in abortion.
Abortion legalization We can do whatever we want with our body, it is our property. What government can do about this is to suggest, not to suppress. However, more than 300,000 females around the world are carrying a rapist’s child, due to formidable pressure from the government’s authorities. Why should the government care about our body?
