The transition from an Associate Degree (AD) nurse to a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a rewarding time during a nurse’s career. There are many reasons why nurses return to college to get their BSN degree. Some return to meet a personal goal others return for professional advancement or are mandated by their employer to do so. Over the past few years many organizations stopped hiring AD nurses or drastically reduced the number they hire. Many AD nurses who delayed returning to school regret not doing so sooner when they realize the wealth of knowledge gained from getting their BSN degree. Advancement to a role such as district director of nursing in Georgia Public Health requires innovation, commitment and strong leadership skills, which BSN nurses are capable of providing. The responsibilities of a public health nursing director are vast and continuously changing. Some of the responsibilities include making sure clinics and district based programs meet set deliverables and operate within state and federal guidelines. The implementation of successful training programs for newly hired nurses is a priority of the nursing director. Assessing to make sure the services being provided by clinic nurses are relevant to the needs of the population. Working with state office leadership to develop policies and procedures based on evidenced based practices is crucial to the health of the public. The curriculum at WGU was very challenging, nonetheless it prepared me to become a safe and effective nurse. According to Garson (2000), the primary issues of healthcare, which were improving access, lowering costs, and improving the quality of care, would accelerate through 2010. Later in 2008, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) along with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation researched the need of radically changing the nursing profession to confront the issues of healthcare (National Academy of Sciences, n.d.). Through these issues the IOM has devised a report suggesting the transformation of nursing practice, education, and leadership. By transforming the nursing profession, the IOM will give way for positive changes in the healthcare system. With this said, the IOM has researched and devised a plan to confront the issues of healthcare, however, how will this impact the nursing profession?

This would increase the number of patients seen and increase the quality of the care provided. The advance practice nurse would be able to hone in on preventative measures and increase patient education. The advance practice nurse can also make recommendations about practice changes needed to facilitate better health outcomes through the use of evidence-based practice. Across the United States, it is common to find nurse-managed health centers that offer accessible health care services to the people. Nurse-managed health centers are a basic necessity in healthcare because they provide affordable and deserved care to the unprivileged population, while at the same time educating and training nurse practitioners. Usually, such health care institutions are led by an advanced practice nurse and as a result, need careful and efficient management and leadership skills and models.
