Imagine being put in a position having to decide wether to drop the worlds first atomic bomb or not. That’s the position Truman was put in. He had to choose between American lives and Japanese lives. Some people still disagree with him choosing to drop the bomb because of amount of innocent lives that were taken. If he didn’t drop the bomb, he would of had to send American troops to Japan to keep fighting. It was a military necessity to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. For starters, it was a war necessity to drop the atomic bomb was because it ended the war faster. It got them to surrender instead of continuing to fight. The atomic bomb was called, “ The Winning Weapon” because it forces the other country to surrender (OI). “We have used it to shorten the agony of the war, in order to save the lives of thousands and thousands of young Americans” (Doc I). If they hadn’t dropped the bomb, many more American lives would have been taken. Also, the American soldiers were scared to keep fighting. “We broke down and cried with relief and joy. We were going to live. We were going to grow to adulthood after all” (Doc H). This shows how terrifying the thought of war was to the soldiers. Truman was the president of the United States at the time, so its obvious why he choose to drop the bomb. It would save more American lives this way. “It would have been morally wrong if we’d have had that weapon and did not use it and let a million more people die” (Doc L). If he didn’t drop it, about 400,000 to 800,000 American lives would have been lost (OI). If Japan couldn’t make war, there wouldn’t be war. “We shall completely destroy Japan’s power to make war” (Doc I). This would lead to less deaths if there wasn’t war.
