His father abandoned the family in 1936, when Audie was in the fifth grade. The quality of man that Audie grew to be is illustrated by the fact that when he returned to the States, he took his younger siblings out of the orphanage and raised them himself. He wanted them to have a better life than his had been.

Even with all the technologies that America attains, they can still be compared to Rome. Cullen Murphy’s question is fair more so on the fact that previous American leaders used “republican political models” and the examples he used for America becoming a “principate”. There has been controversies over “personal freedom” and the government keeping secrets. I like how he brought up how Rome was “overwhelmed by the consequences of its own growing size and might”. America grown tremendously, not to mention their power.

In the year 1914, a war started that would turn innocent people against each other, and have aftermaths that include thousands of people dead due to new equipment like tanks, gas attacks, and hand-to-hand combat. In this war there was a soldier named Paul Bäumer who is a German nineteen year old who has made friends that will last a lifetime during this experience, but has also felt immense pain. His daily routine is to sleep, eat, and fight in the trenches, and he experiences death every day. Most soldiers view death as a recurring event, but Paul views it as wretchedness, which makes him different from others by caring about his comrades more than others. Paul shows many qualities through this experience of being a soldier in the First World War, and he learns what is necessary in life, which takes some people years to figure out.

The war novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque depicts one protagonist, Paul, as he undergoes a psychological transformation. Alternatively, his experiences allow him to develop into a more sophisticated individual. Remarque illustrates these metamorphic experiences to expose his theme of the loss of not only people’s lives but also innocence and tranquility that occurs in war.
