The Battle at Appomattox Courthouse was the last major battle and was one of the most important battles of the Civil War. It involved two well known generals at the time, Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Robert E. Lee proved himself to be very valuable during the Mexican-American War under the command of General Winfield Scott. He was a valued tactician and commander. Ulysses S. Grant also took part in the Mexican-American War. He proved himself to be an efficient quartermaster and efficiently overlooked the movement of supplies. The true battle began on April 2, 1865 and lasted until Lee surrendered on April 9th, 1865. This was the Appomattox Campaign, which led the way to the Battle at Appomattox Courthouse and the Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. On the night of April 2, 1865, the Confederate forces, including Lee, began moving towards Amelia Courthouse, where they requested supplies and decided to regroup after being attacked by Ulysses’s forces and cut off from supplies in Petersburg and Richmond. They arrived at Amelia Courthouse on April 4, 1865. They ended up not being able to get their supplies because Grant cut the supplies off. It also gave the Union control of the Mississippi River. The Battle of Vicksburg was one of the most important Battles of the Civil War, and it helped speed up the end of the long fought war. It also let the north go into the deep south so they could eradicate the “Rebels”. It split the Confederacy in half. It made it easier to defeat the “Rebels” when they were not able to communicate with their other half.
The Battle of spotsylvania court house happened in May 1864, this was the second major battle in Ulysses S. Grant's American civil war overland campaign, the battle of the wilderness also followed the devastation. Grant's Union army disengaged from the confederate army it was lead by Robert e. Lee he moved in a southeasterly direction to try the confederates into a battle that would have a better outcome. Unfortunately, the spotsylvania court house was beaten by part of the confederate army which led first attack on laurel hill. The Battle of Antietam was considered the bloodiest day in American history killing, injuring, and capturing 23,000 men in Sharpsburg, Maryland. The battle was led by Robert E. Lee of the Army of Northern Virginia and General George McClellan of the Potomac. General McClellan was chosen by President Lincoln over John Pope to lead the Union in this battle. McClellan was very pretentious, and most of the cabinet members choose Pope over McClellan, but Lincoln went against them and choose McClellan. The Battle was fought on July 1-3, 1863 near and in the small Pennsylvanian town of Gettysburg. This Battle involved the most amount of casualties in the entire Civil War. The Union had both Generals George G. Meade and John F. Reynolds while the south only had Robert E. Lee as their commanding general. Small groups of both of the armies found each other at Gettysburg on July 1st. When news made it back to General Lee, in just a matter of hours, Lee moved a large sum of his troops to attack the Union head on.
General Lee chose to surrender to General Grant. Even though he surrendered, he was still a great general and leader. After all, both General Grant and General Lee were very good examples of what it meant to be superior leaders. They both fought hard, and led very appropriately.
