Imperialism in the late nineteenth century was sparked from the rise of industrialization throughout the world and the competition for new territory. Modernized countries took advantage of uncivilized nations in order to utilize their available resources and to compete with their civilized counterparts. Western imperialist countries in the late nineteenth century exploited periphery countries and hindered them economically and human-environmentally for the purpose of their own wealth and benefit, despite some arguments that outline a mutually beneficial global economy from imposing a strong, powerful government in these unstable places in order to control and maintain the chaotic behavior of the natives. By using the India and Congo case studies, …show more content…
The Congolese were threatened by the Force Publique—the military control the Belgians introduced into the Congo—and taken from their homes. They were dragged down the road, tied at the neck so they could not escape, and taken away to become slaves. The soldiers beat the Congolese, offered them no food to eat, and killed those who refused to walk (Canisius, 250-256). The Belgian control over the Congo put the lives of all the natives in imminent danger. They were threatened and treated as commodities, not people. The imperialism of Belgium over the Congo brought great destruction and death to the natives. Similarly, the Belgians imposed a high rubber quota on the Congolese, one too high for many to afford, and punished those who could not pay the tax by cutting off their hands (Photograph of Congolese). Hands were an acceptable payment for the tax, so many villages fought each other and cut off one another’s limbs in order to pay back their titanic debt. The Belgians encouraged the Congolese to turn on each other in order to pay these taxes. They applauded those who paid the tax and further punished those who did not. Villages turned on each other for the Belgians amusement. The Belgians deemed the Congolese to be less superior and hurt those who did not follow their
Imperialism is when a stronger, larger nation dominates a smaller or weaker nation politically, economically, and socially. Imperialism increased in the 19th century due to industrialization. European industry increased there need for cheaper raw materials and massive markets to sell new, finished products. Europeans also dominated the world with their advanced military weapons, to dominate Africa and other south pacific areas. The powder keg was a huge contribution to all the chaos leading up to the destruction of world war one caused.
Thousands killed in the Leopold outbreak. King Leopold should be condemned for his brutal actions, and for making the population more then half in population, like in Lukolela “The population in the villages of Lukolela in January 1891 must have been not less than 6,000 people, but when I counted the whole population in Lukolela at the end of December 1896. I found it to be only 719… but judge of my heartache when on counting them all again on Friday and Saturday last, to find only a population of 352 people.” (Document 5) In 1800-1900’s, King Leopold wanted to and planned to take control of the Congo people.
The extent to which European imperialism affected economies in Africa and/or Asia in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was economically and agriculturally. European imperialism affected economies
As the 19th century came to a close, a new wave of colonization spread across the globe while European powers and the United States sought to expand their realm and assert control over new lands. This time was defined as a period of expansion and imperialism for the most powerful countries during the late 19th and 20th centuries. This era was driven by a complex set of economic, political, and social forces that helped fuel the desire to expand. Among these forces more specifically, Imperialists were drawn to imperialize Africa and Asia because of the promise of new resources and an opportunity to establish new trade routes, receiving honor from additional countries while also gaining more territory for them to control, but also the chance
Imperialism was a controversial idea that a nation can extend its power outward through means of diplomatic or military force. This often results in a shift of power from one major force currently in control to another. The people of that nation under control conflict may also experience wars, rebellions, or cultural destruction. Looking at some of these events, we see some positives and negatives of imperialistic action taken by the United States, and how it affected the nations imperialized by the United States. For starters, let’s look at Hawaii’s annexation.
Things got so bad with the natives that revolts began, only to lead to the deaths of up to 10 million natives(Hochschild 5), due to being worked to death or killed for resisting. No matter how many times the natives tried to put an end to this slavery, it always made things worse for them. Leopold's soldiers needed to prove that they were not wasting ammo by showing their commander the severed hand of whoever they fired a round at(Dummett 2). If they did not show their commander a hand, they would be severely beaten or sometimes killed, this only led to the soldiers killing innocent victims to avoid punishment(Dummett
Imperialism In the 19th and 20th centuries, various powerful nations sent colonizers to dominate weaker nations and expand their influence. This domination is called imperialism, which is still practiced today in moderation. Among the many countries shaped by imperialism were India and China. These two large countries were both colonized by the British who were one of the greatest imperialistic powers at that time.
Europeans used the influence of Imperialism in the Congo during King Leopold’s reign to try to discover raw materials and enhance economic trade in his colonial empire. Since Africa during this time period was unexplored, Europeans thought there had to be resources just waiting to be found. This would have expanded profits by an enormous amount because resources such as rubber and jewels were in great demand. Unfortunately, King Leopold went to drastic measures to fulfill his purpose in central Africa. One of history’s massive genocides took place in the Congo.
The legacy of colonization in the African country of Congo has been incredibly devastating. Both the people and the economy were dealt a low blow by King Leopold of Belgium’s invidious, violent regime from 1885-1908. Leopold’s soldiers committed acts so barbaric towards the Congolese that Europeans did not believe the reports of it at first. Following his rule, the actual Belgian government reluctantly took over the Congo. Congo finally gained independence in the early 1960s.
As America became a great power, it has continued its legacy of territorial expansionism through neo-imperialist policies. Aside from acquiring land and expanding American territory, the United States has established policies that have allowed direct and often indirect military and political control, economic exploitation, and the introduction of American ideals. The U.S. has justified this form of colonialism by claiming that it is for mutual economic pursuits, the spreading of democracy, and the establishment of stable governments in developing countries. Despite America’s noble causes, American imperialism has caused many repercussions. The United States should cease to be an imperialist power as it is economically damaging to countries under its rule, costly to America, violates the fundamental American principle of self-governance, and exacerbates social and political situations in countries America has tampered with.
The Belgians also spread their language around, minimizing the use of tribal languages in an effort to diminish Congo’s culture completely. The Belgians made it clear that they were in charge and showed violence if the Congolese people continues to speak their native languages. If the people had the same beliefs, they would be more likely not to rebel. King Leopold and the Belgians prosper when Congolese people change their beliefs because this means that they have gained more power over the
The June 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by the Serbian Black Hand Group, caused Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia. As their allies got involved this conflict grew into World War I (WWI). This event wasn’t the real cause of the war, it was just the spark that started it. Most people would say the causes were imperialism, nationalism, alliances and militarism.
There were cultural and economic motives for imperialism. First economic, Many countries were industrialized in 1900s, and they needed a lot of materials that they did not have. In order not to depend on others, which nobody wanted, many strong countries started conquering territories and had the necessary materials. Also, followed by the industrialization, population grew as quickly as never before. New jobs were needed and people who were unemployed, left to other countries to find jobs.
Even though it has been over sixty years since Myanmar was imperialized, remnants of the outcome of imperialism can still be well observed. The language, the clothing, the infrastructures all have been affected by imperialism. These effects may deceive people into thinking that imperialism was all sunshine and rainbows but in reality, imperialism brutally destroyed the different aspects of a country. Imperialism impacted societies in countless negative ways. It led to slave trade which then led to social discrimination around the world.
In the 19th century imperialism was an important part of building European empires. The four major motives for imperialism are economic, strategic, religious and political. These motives helped great empires expand their territory and brought new cultures and languages to both the colonised countries and the countries colonising them. European countries such as Britain and France would use their colonies in Africa for economic gain. They would be able to exploit the country’s natural resources and bring them back to the “mother country” to sell and use.
