Poverty is a worldwide issue many people suffer with, narrowing it down to 14.5% of citizens in America, or more than 45 million. People raised in these conditions struggle to pay for transportation, proper medical aid, food, and clothing; usually surviving on a few dollars a day for either themselves or a full family. When raised in a difficult environment, alone with a single mother, having poor grades, and an ill attitude, it is hard for people to tell themselves that one day, they will be successful and can do something that will change them and the world. However, only the people who give up like that succumb to their poverty-stricken lives and fail to improve. Ben Carson experienced all of those things, but he would still sit in the hospital rooms and listen to the machines, pridefully imagining himself in those situations and his name being called out over the speakers. Many wealthy Americans believe that the millions of people who don’t reach their definition of success simply aren’t trying hard enough. A family that, “loved them, read stories to them, and nurtured them with Little League sports, library cards and music lessons” (1). Horatio Alger is described as “the classic American hero, a writer of mediocre fiction with a formula for commercial success.” (Dalton) He found success by writing fictional stories that seemed to inspire children living in poverty to rise above all that was holing them down through hard work and determination. What Alger did not write was that this is a very unlikely feat to be accomplished by just any poverty stricken child. In reality it takes more than just hard work and determination to enable financial security, you need money to start with.

I was originally aware that often it is not someone’s fault they are in poverty, but often a consequence of circumstance. The “American Dream” that anyone who is willing to work hard and do their job right can make it big or move up in social classes is not true. For some it might be true, but often people who live in poverty are not allowed the resources or opportunities to change their situations. After the simulation I became more aware of just how many different challenges people can face when in poverty, and they might make enough money to not qualify for welfare, but that does not mean that they can always afford the basic needs of a family like food because all
“If I Can’t do it” What if I told you that a man who helped lead the disability rights movement, was someone who could not walk and struggles to talk and is diagnosed with cerebral palsy. If I were to tell you this, how much would you take it seriously and how much of it would you believe. This man is Arthur Campbell Jr. and he is a true American hero and someone everyone should look up to. He has achieved more in life than most people have with full function ability, which is something he has never let get in his way. Campbell, among other disabled people helped lead the disability movement all the way to Capitol Hill until they got what they wanted.

Baker's own experiences show the value of knowledge and perseverance in overcoming adversity and succeeding in one's career. Despite his family's financial difficulties, Baker was able to receive a scholarship to attend college and finally found success as a journalist. Similarly, despite having to leave school to support the family, Baker's brother was able to launch a successful career in advertising. But not every member of Baker's family faced the same obstacles to realizing the American Dream.
Ehrenreich uses her experiences to expand and illustrate Mantsios’ thesis about economic inequality in America and the lasting effects of class distinctions. Ehrenreich shares her experiences working in low paying jobs and challenges the idea that low income citizens are not hard working people. It obvious that both of these authors want Americans to recognize that our society is unjust and corrupt. Though I do agree with their claims that achieving the American dream is not a simple task, I refuse to believe that hard work and perseverance are not enough to be successful in this country. There have been numerous examples of individuals who have overcame the obstacles placed by their race and social standings.
Although there a few modern examples of people with a ‘rags to riches’ story, namely Oprah Winfrey and Steve Jobs, the masses of people born into lower income households don’t commonly rise to the middle class. A recent study by Pew Charitable Trust signifies how important family wealth is, as the “median family wealth of those who made it to middle class was $94,586, while the median wealth of those stuck at the bottom was just $8,892” (Hargreaves 1). The higher a family’s financial capital is, the easier it is to invest in opportunities such as education, which increases income. Winston in 1984 observes how the proles are intelligent in their daily tasks, stating how "even people who could barely read and write seemed capable of intricate calculations and staggering feats of memory” (Orwell 72).
“America is going to hell if we don’t use her vast resources to end poverty and make it possible for all of God’s children to have the basic necessities of life” (Martin Luther King Jr). At this point, we are in hell; more than 16 million children in the United States - live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level (nccp.org). This is a serious issue for children due to the fact that poverty can have a physical and intellectual effect on a child’s mental development. The vision as a society should be to end child poverty by first ensuring that all parents and caregivers have the resource to support and nurture their children through livable wages, affordable childcare, basic needs for nutrition, and housing assistance.
