The United States today is credited with many different achievements, such as being one of the most successful countries in the world. Some of these accomplishments include conquering problems one by one with durable work ethic, and having a daring reputation of being righteously independent. But when one lifts up the rug, they can find all the dirt, dust and issues hidden below. A term known as the “Gilded Age”, created by Mark Twain in the late 19th century, explains a problem such as America’s. Metaphorically lined with shining gold, America is perceived as perfect, and people from other countries yearn to have a taste of the freedom and riches provided. However, in reality, the United States is burdened with countless issues that are failed …show more content…
should be allowed, but under special circumstances. Failing to punish illegal activity influences and erupts more illegal activity, breeds public cynicism, and discourages others from obeying the law. Illegal activity that remains unpunished threatens important American values of law and order. Criminal behavior should never be tolerated, especially in a country with such a valuable reputation to uphold. When illegal immigrants commit crimes, such as rape, murder or drug distribution, it costs U.S. taxpayers $1.6 billion in prison costs alone. About 29% of the cuurent prison population consists of illegal immigrants (Source D). Some events linked to the compromise of national security have been plotted and conducted by known illegal immigrants. “The greatest threat to U.S. homeland security comes from illegals who enter the country through its porous borders in order to attack…. It is all too easy for illegal immigrants to slip in beneath the radar, eschewing the legalization process and never being detected and deported….” reports Jan C. Ting, a professor of law at Temple University (Source C). Another source emphasizes the unnecessary illegal activity by quoting the U.S department of Justice in 2006 after they charged two men planning to aid the Taliban, “… a Pakistani man living in the U.S. illegally has been indicted for aiding the Taliban and training with firearms for jihad against Americans” …show more content…
Some believe that illegal immigrants are the source of protecting and occupying our macro and micro economies today, Illegal immigration is taking a greater and greater toll on the American community while federal and state enforcement allows the problem to develop, local government is also at fault when it rewards law-breakers with access to free taxpayer-funded services. There are certain people who may believe that the U.S should provide illegal immigrants with access to some public services such as health care and education, however, it costs more to sustain the amount of people coming in and also leads to more negative situations versus
The impact industrialism had on the Gilded Age was that it allowed people to gain wealth, improve materials, and to increase production. Industrialists like Vanderbelt and Rockerfeller are one of the main reasons this time period is called, the Gilded Age, because of how they were able to create monopolies within the railroad and oil industries and thus, make themselves rich. These two people impacted the Gilded Age by further improving people's lives with their ideas. Vanderbelt cut travel time to seven days with his first transcontinental railroad and Rockerfeller made homes safer by creating standard oil that won't be as dangerous as kerosene. People like them also shaped how we do business today by carving the path to nationwide trade
I choose to defend the prompt of my choice in more detail. In the 1870's, as the Civil War receded into memory, the United States became a leading Industrial power. Advances in technology and new access to the immense resources of the North American continent drove American Industrialization. This industrialization brought the growth of new American cities such as Chicago, and the arrival of a flood of immigrants from all over Europe to man the factories. During the Gilded Age, businessmen reaped enormous profits from this new economy.
The impact of the gilded age is that during the gilded age the economy grew faster than at any time in the us history. The production of iron and steel increased also people moved from rural areas to urban ones during the gilded age. Many businesses, corporations, and factories were located in urban cities new building technologies helped cities grow. Also the process of mass production evolved even more with the development of new technologies. Also immigrants came to the united states and most settled in cities and businesses located their factories and corporate headquarters in cities.
According to a study released last year by the Pew Hispanic Center, as of 2008, 11.9 million illegal immigrants lived in the United States, more than triple the 3.5 million who lived in the country in 1990 (Izumi). Immigration throughout the years has become a major issue in the U.S because of too many immigrants entering the country year after year. The U.S has come to a point whether they should deport the immigrants back to their country. Believe it or not, these immigrants are a big contribution to the U.S. If it wasn’t for them, the U.S economy wouldn’t be where it stands now.
Somehow, the United States always overcomes those problems and continues to thrive, however, the way the problems are being fixed isn’t changing and is becoming detrimental to society. In his essay, “How to Restore the American Dream”, Fareed Zakaria explains to his readers' ways to fix how the American Dream has changed. He begins his essay by articulating how America “seemed dazzling and larger than life” (para. 1) compared to India, where he grew up. He continues throughout his essay writing about how America is no longer what it used to be. People from other countries don’t view it the same anymore because other countries are doing just as well.
Immigration reform has been a big issue for our country in recent years. Many U.S. citizens claim that immigration is harmful to the US economy. In just 20 years, we have seen the average number of immigrants per year jump a staggering 20%. This has lead to the biased opinions we see towards immigration today. Currently, our country is not receiving any benefit from immigration.
What do you think of when you think of the land of America? John Winthrop once compared America to “A city on a Hill” (Artifact 1) Not only do Americans often have a superior attitude towards our neighboring countries, whether that attitude of superiority is righteous or not is in a way up to the eyes of the beholder, but other countries look up metaphorically to the light we shine and want to be included in our secrets. If America were a party, they would crave an invitation. They want to participate in the masterpiece which is the land of the free and the home of the brave. For as long as our country has been around it has been more than just a beautiful location to visit on vacations, it has almost in itself taken the identity of an idea.
The Myth of American Exceptionalism Godfrey Hodgson, author of “The Myth of American Exceptionalism,” critics the concept of American exceptionalism throughout the book. Hodgson’s states that his purpose is not to ‘’minimize American achievements or to demean the quality of American civilization.” (16) He says he admires the idea of a country ruled based on popular sovereignty, equal rights and the questioning of a government that was created for the people. However, he also criticizes the concept of American exceptionality through the notion that the United States’ superiority and “uniqueness” has been greatly exaggerated by misguided interpretations of American history, as well as to warn the audience, not only Americans, about the dangers of “self-praise” build around “unreal and hubristic assumptions.”
People will always break the law, so we as a nation should do whatever it takes to make them pay the consequence after doing
Technology greatly impacted the Gilded age. Technology brought more competition into the industry. Also, it made life much easier for people in the United states to live. It is true that technology did create tension between the classes. Competition increased due to new technology being created throughout the Gilded age.
The decade between 1890 and 1900 expressed a crucial time in the United States of America’s history. Many people experienced struggles throughout this time while others prospered. Mark Twain suggested that despite the significant achievements of the United States, Americans experienced poverty. This statement is an accurate description of the lively hood people experienced in their daily lives during the Gilded Age whether it was positive or negative. Many people during this time period focused on the positive outcomes that resulted from the Gilded Age such as new inventions, the gospel of wealth, additions of land to the country, urbanization, and middle-class improvements.
Not only do immigrants cost America financially, but they also need housing, education, healthcare, and jobs which all have an individual impact from immigrants. Many of these issues are covered using tax payer dollars and then the overwhelming population due to this growth in immigrants will have to be addressed in each individual area or city. Some of these issues are fire stations and police officers to accommodate the larger populations, hiring enough teachers to educate the growing rate of children enrolled in the public schools, or providing welfare benefits such as food stamps or Medicaid to immigrants who are mostly of low-income
The United States of America, being a country founded by immigrants, is known all over the world as the land of great opportunities. People from all walks of life travelled across the globe, taking a chance to find a better life for them and their family. Over the years, the population of immigrants has grown immensely, resulting in the currently controversial issue of illegal immigration. Illegal immigrants are the people who have overstayed the time granted on their US, visa or those who have broken the federal law by crossing the border illegally. Matt O’Brien stated in his article “The government thinks that 10.8 million illegal immigrants lived in the country in January 2009, down from a peak of nearly 12 million in 2007.”(Para, 2) While some argue that illegal immigrants burden the United States of America and its economy, others believe that they have become essential and are an important part of the US, economy.
Immigration has always been a crucial topic in the United States government. Especially when it comes to giving amnesty and passing an immigration reform to 11 million immigrants, that live in the country. Many citizens believe that immigrants are detrimental to the well-being of the United States and do not agree with the passage of an immigration reform. One reason is that many believe immigrants take away the jobs of American citizens. Other reasons are that immigrants bring crime to the country and affect the economy.
Due to the fact that illegal immigrants usually come into the country with nothing, they find that committing crimes is their only way to live. Many immigrants find that using robbery and fraud is an easy way to gain large sums of money, seeing that they usually are unable to find steady jobs. They are also more violent. After realizing in their past country that they could get away with harsh crimes, they figure they can do it here as well. Over one hundred illegal immigrants whom were caught and released have continued to be charged with murders.
