Beyond by Graham Mcnamee was a fantastic book. Beyond was an extremely suspenseful and mysterious book. Jane, the protagonist, is a girl from a small town in Canada, and she has endured a bunch in her life. She got electrocuted, shot in the head with a nail, drank drain cleaner, and she was born without a heartbeat. A spirt forced her to shoot herself with a nail gun, drink drain cleaner, and touch a power line. This ghost is her shadow; this ghost attached himself to her since she almost died, when she was born. When the doctors brought Jane back to life, the ghost attaches himself to her, and said that Jane is his. However, Leo, the ghost, wants her dead, so they can be together in the after life. All the secrets he concealed were released, and he went to Heaven. Leo becomes the courteous and sweet kid he was when he was an adolescent. If Leo and Jane were the same age; I believe that they would be great friends. Jane and Leo are similar in character since they both are into exploring places, both are caring, and they both weren’t in the popular groups. They might’ve even began dating which is what Leo wanted, but they couldn’t since he dead. The author didn’t explain much about Leo since he was murdered as a child. The author just gave us a dark vibe about him until the end then Leo murders Starks. Although Leo forced Jane to sprint to Starks log cabin. However Leo felt guilty, and murders Starks by basically punching a hole in his heart. Leo showed his caring side at this part and showed that he would do anything for her. She doesn’t let any circumstance get to her. Jane wasn’t ideally a popular girl. She only had one friend which was Lexie. The people that attended Jane’s school perpetually bullied her. When she got a nail shot in her head; they said that she got “drilled” and went on to say other rude comments about her. She didn’t let any of those comments get in her head, and she kept living her life. If someone did say something to her; she would say something back to them. However Jane wouldn’t fight anyone since she isn’t very muscular and isn’t very big in size. I would say she is a really strong character
In the book The Walk On the main character, Alex Myers is taking his time to do things instead of rushing through them. Being a first generation American, he struggled staying on the right path and got involved in gangs very early with his two older brothers. He focuses his writing on personal events to help troubled teenagers realize that there is more to life than joining a gang and spending their time in and out of jail.
Leo, who is African American, is one of Spero’s brothers, is a high school teacher, and is spoken about the most throughout the story. Because, Leo is African American and living in the suburbs, one can imagine the stereotypical comments and situations he encounters. Especially when he is involved with Spero’s job and ends up getting drug into helping Spero get a student of his back from some
The Analysis of the Stranger, John Wilson in The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson Heroes in literary works were once referred to as the "rebel"; however, the rebel has been replaced by the "stranger" in recent literature. In Lois Simmie's The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson, the novel centers on the title character who is alienated, disaffected and an outsider. The author’s depiction of the central character of Wilson as a stranger engages the reader in a different way, by having the reader want to know more about this mysterious and striking figure.
After listening to a few of the oral history interviews and viewing photos from the events that occurred during the 1970 Kent State Shootings, I can’t begin to imagine the true effects of such an occurrence. During the past two decades, I’ve distantly witnessed, via multi-media, numerous acts of massacres on school campuses alone (elementary, high school and college) that resulted in lost lives and immense trauma for all involved. I’m sitting here trying to visualize what it may have been like for all the KS students, facility, and towns people, as well as, the members of the national guard during the weekend of May 1-4, 1970. A colleague of mine, Jane Grote describes it well as she was literally in the middle of it all.
- After seeing the fight between the two bulls, Leo seems to learn some lessons about his future. - The end of the short story shows that this experience brings Leo some thinking and changes his view, and Leo decides to discuss his life with his mother.
However, for Stargirl it was comfortable, because she love to care about other people in her life. Furthermore, much of the book focuses on Leo's relationship with Stargirl, which shakes him to the core, forcing him to question all kinds of things about himself, high school, and life. Leo develops a relationship with Stargirl, when she sends him a car for Valentines day that told him that Stargirl was in love with him. Even though she was different from anyone else in the school, he still like being with or aroud her. However Leo tried to change her personality, to a “normal” persons personality, as the other kids in Mica High School.
Leo's insight; “Most of that stuff is just about classes you have to go to anyway, and walking around the city on a leash with Mom. You're not even trying to make this interesting.” Leo's reasons are justified because he is developing Rafe's future memories and making sure Rafe has a fun, memorable year. For instance, he made a new rule that for every ten small things Rafe puts on the list, Rafe needs to do a big thing and when Rafe questioned a big thing, Leo explained that it will have to be something he'll remember for the rest of his life. Rafe's reaction to Leo's new rules was positive because the new rules made him realize that he needed to step up his game.
As Oprah Winfrey once said, “The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams.” Adventures are both rewarding and life-changing; they continue to be remembered all throughout a person’s legacy because ultimately, the person who went on the adventure went solely to undergo the long journey ahead of them. Interestingly enough, the bigger picture of adventure, both an exciting and a nerve-racking experience one faces can often create a positive bias for someone else since he or she is in favor of all what went into making the adventure so memorable and illuminating. Similarly, Jon Krakauer, the author of the national bestseller Into the Wild, has a positive bias towards the main protagonist of the book, Christopher McCandless. Christopher McCandless embarked on a journey to Alaska, something he had always dreamt of doing.
War brings out the worst and best in people. The author Morris Gleitzman of the historical fiction novel Once, tells the story of a young Jewish boy who grew up in the midst of World War ll, right in the centre of its fury and flames. The protagonist Felix Salinger invites the reader on a journey of self discovery, determination and the importance of books to the young mind. Gleitzman conveys the themes using a variety of techniques such as point of view, symbolism and ellipsis. The incredibly well-written and overwhelming story demonstrates the challenges faced on a journey in which the main protagonists learns more about themselves and the world around them.
As getting further into the novel, it is fairly evident that Leo has feelings for Stargirl and is ducking them away. Leo resembles to have the fear that he will not conform to everyone else at Mica high which at the moment is a adverse problem for Leo. One challenge he is facing is, for example, would be how he is ashamed of his new love Stargirl because she is the school mockery yet in addition to that majority of the school is against her. " Hi, Leo!"
It is ironic that Jane is seen as the guilty party in the incident with John Reed because John started the fight when he slapped Jane. Then when John’s sisters, Eliza and Georgina, go to “tattle tale” on Jane, their mother blames Jane for the whole situation. Jane compares John to a “murderer,” “slave-driver,” and “Roman Emperors” (Bronte 9). During this comparison, she is implying that he is a very cruel and awful person. That he would beat her and boss her around.
Sickened, Julie Gregory’s memoir asserts claims of abuse that are still contested by her mother. Gregory’s memoir includes descriptions of various forms of abuse used against Gregory, her brother Danny, and several foster children housed in their home. It is important to note that Julie’s mother was never formally diagnosed. Rather, Gregory came to the conclusion on her own that her mother may be categorized as having Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another after learning of the disorder in a psychology class. While Gregory did eventually study psychiatry at the University of Sheffield, England, she does have an inherent bias towards this diagnoses due to her years suffering her mother’s abuse.
Although I am not a fan I do see their place in the writing and educational world. After looking at our short story collection I decided to invest some time in updating it. I didn't really know where to start so I asked my BookGabbers if they had any recommendations.
