Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders was interrupted by Black Lives Matter protesters for the second time in Seattle, Washington on August 8th, 2015; the incident involved heated confrontation and was largely reported on as an attack on Bernie Sanders’ campaign. Two African-American women stormed the stage, demanding to be allowed time to speak and threatening to shut down Sanders’ event. The two were members of Black Lives Matter, a social activist group fighting violence towards African Americans. Unfortunately, due primarily to the negative reactions of the crowd, many news outlets reported on the effects of Black Lives Matter on Sanders’ campaign rather than on the message that was pushed by the protesters. This lack of focus on the critical …show more content…
While more attention has been placed on restructuring the American law enforcement system, it seems that the only reason these politicians are now addressing the concerns of the black community is that they are counting on African American votes for the Primary and General Elections. Had the two women not stormed the stage and forced their message out into the rally, the media, and the nation, it would have been easy for politicians to continue marginalizing Black Lives Matter. For this reason, taking control of the Sanders rally forcefully was not a mistake, despite what some may think. The social progress of African Americans lies in the hands of those in charge, and it seems that the only way for activist groups like Black Lives Matter to inspire change is by turning negative media coverage into an …show more content…
It seems reasonable to suggest that the crowd in Seattle, Washington booed the two Black Lives Matter protesters because they wanted to hear Bernie Sanders speak. Some may even suggest that the two women were out of line and should not have been allowed to speak. These claims stem from the negative sentiment towards the way the two women took control: by force. However, we should be cautious of how quickly we dismiss their protest; clearly the two protesters inconvenienced the crowd, which was looking forward to hearing Bernie Sanders speak. In reality, though, how much of an inconvenience was it to stand and listen to a community that feels it has been wronged by society and ignored by its representatives? Obviously, seeing these two women forcibly take control was frustrating, but it could not have been more frustrating than seeing one’s community be systematically murdered by law enforcement officials with no form of justice imposed on the perpetrators. Black Lives Matter has organized many demonstrations, but most have failed to receive adequate media coverage that explains their cause. This lack of attention to a life or death situation must have pushed these women to act, regardless of whether people wanted to
When you google Jasmine Richards the first thing that pops up is an article about her conviction of Felony Lynching. Not the dedication and time she has spent investing into the Black Lives Matter movement and organizing rallies nor her commitment to improving her community, but her conviction. The Black Lives Matter organization was created in 2012 following the death of Trayvon Martin. Over the last four years the movement has gained much traction in the media and has accomplished small changes in legislation requiring body cameras to be worn at all times by law enforcement in order to protect civilian interests along with the interests of officers on duty.
This being the second “major” killing of the Black Lives Matter movement, especially due to it being recorded, there was nationwide outcry after death and after the decision to not indict
“Black Lives Matter “is a recent example of Black Rhetoric within the media. Dating back to the unfortunate events that took place in Ferguson with the shooting of a young black male named Michael Brown, the even has grown infamously and famously depending on which side you tend to agree with. Countless people have given their input on the situation and not all blacks tend to agree with the movement of “Black Lives Matter”. Recently a women named Peggy Hubbard went on a rant about how she felt the movement was an unjust movement. Ms. Hubbard stated that saying black lives matter was implying that no other lives within the community mattered.
After learning about the death of Emmett Till and being posed with the question of if it sparked the black lives matter movement, I would have to agree. With the social injustice Emmett Till endured it would not be right to claim the attention brought to this subject did not spark the modern day justice movement “Black Lives Matter.” First of all, the Till murder was about a fourteen year old, African American male who went down to Money, Mississippi to visit his family. While down there, Till entered a store and upon leaving he whistled at a white lady, not knowing this was considered a heinous crime. The white lady eventually told her husband about the incident, obviously, this was not appreciated so the husband decided to punish Till.
Alicia Garza: co-creator of the #BlackLivesMatter movement (BLM) advocates that -“Black Lives Matter doesn’t mean your life isn’t important – it means that Black lives, which are seen as without value within White supremacy, are important to your liberation. Given the disproportionate impact state violence has on Black lives, we understand that when Black people in this country get free, the benefits will be wide-reaching and transformative for society as a whole. When we are able to end the hyper-criminalisation of Black people and end the poverty, control and surveillance of Black people, every single person in this world has a better shot at getting and staying free. When Black people get free, everybody gets free.” (The Conversation,2017).
Statement of Purpose In light of recent events and social media uproar, the goal of this argumentative paper is to provide a brief but comprehensive understanding to the concept of the black lives matter movement and slogan. The movement is an affirmation of Black people’s contributions to society, humanity, and their resilience in the face of oppression. (“About,” n.d.) As a result, this paper will critically examine the foundation of the movement and the validity of both sides of the argument and the media’s involvement and several other topics.
America was founded because the colonists didn’t agree with the government of Great Britain. Taxation had a huge impact on the colonists and even todays economy. Great Britain had put a tax on alcohol, sugar, stamps, paper documents, and even tea. Colonists became inflamed by being taxed without representation, causing them to take drastic measures to prove their points through disobedience and revolting against the government.
They are determined to put an end to whatever might cause their mistreatment. “The black lives matter” campaign is a great example of one of these movements that have been impactful by standing up for themselves and calling out the problem. These problems occur across race, ethnicity and gender. Equality and fair treatment should be ethical and consistent among anyone in a position of that
The Black Lives Matter was founded in 2013 by three African American women. It’s another social justice that has made national news for their cause. Black Lives Matter is just more than a social movement. It is an out cry for help, as a nation, as a whole. Black Lives Matter is a community.
This report is showing light to the communities’ response to police brutality particularly in the black communities and also their encounters with police officers. Police brutality is physical violence and great cruelty demonstrated by a police officer. Police brutality and misconduct have existed for many decades and it even has been broadcasted in news stories over America, but nothing has changed. It has happened predominantly to African Americans in lower-income states. Police officers are given slaps on the wrist for taking a life or injuring an innocent person.
Another crucial point that Black Lives Matter movement requires is collaboration and partnership. The movement must reach out to other organizations across the nation to support and stand for Black people. Effective protesters need to have a variety of ways for families, youth and communities to be involved. They need to create partnership with local churches, schools, agencies and organizations and draw on the strength of the community wide collaboration. Social movement is multifaceted; there are different ways to be involved and different levels of involvement.
Currently we are dealing with a major uprising due to police brutality and the death of numerous African Americans at the hands of our officers. The movement now labeled as “Black Lives Matter” has seen a major surge in support from around the nation. As seen in figure. 1, it is apparent that the message of “Black Lives Matter” holds a great deal of meaning to people and the names of those who they hold dearly to them. Walking through Union Square this chalk drawing stands out because it is very large in size and hard to miss, it transforms this front area of the park, standing for a cause that has taken this nation by storm.
There have been many movements in the United States in which African Americans have been the focal point for example the Selma March, the March on Washington, the civil rights movement, and even today the Black Lives Matter movement. Those movements have had a significant impact on the United States and still play a part in today’s society. Those movements still play a part in today’s society because without those movements there wouldn’t be a Black Lives Matter because African Americans wouldn’t have the courage to stand up a fight for their rights if it wasn’t for Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, or the many other activists that stood up for African-American rights. Selma and the March on Washington share a big relationship to the Black Lives Matter and they are just as important to the civil rights movement.
they also encourage equality among black individuals who are portrayed as outcasts through mainstream media and are a subject of much discrimination by individuals of different classes and races. While I do agree that black lives do matter and this group set is for a good cause. they also have the right to protect the African American community, however, it is imperative to set a good example and not encourage more violence through unethical protests that further cause havoc and further creates a false image of the African-American community. While I also Agree with Heather MacDonald’s article, which informs about the potential dangers of
The title of the article I chose to address is titled “The rise of Black Lives Matter: Trying to break the cycle of violence and silence”. This article extend beyond the idea of Black Lives Matter and wants the reader to be informed on what it is like to be black in america. The author includes a wide amount of information to help the reader understand why this cry for help was even created and why they want to stand up and make a change in our society. The purpose of this piece is to inform the general audience as to what Black Lives Matter really is and explain how they hope to rise as a movement. All though there may be issues within the group and outside forces that are wanting to go against them they will still not be silenced.
