Brian C. Schmidt’s (2002) chapter, “The History an Historiography of International Relations”, covers detailed aspects of the field of International Relations regarding its history and problems it has faced over its evolution. This essay will argue that Schmidt is able to effectively identify and address difficult issues posed in the International Relations field of work. This essay begins with a brief summary of Schmidt’s work and ideas. As the chapter leads on it explains the history of International Relations and the importance that should be placed on it and how it has developed. Schmidt discusses the complications with modern day information is not necessarily “new” (2002, 4) but has actually derived from the past, and along with this comes his ideas of how we should “approach writing the history of the field” (4). Following from this, Schmidt goes into detail about International Relations as an academic field of study and the challenges, common misconceptions and mistakes that result of modern day teaching. Schmidt covers an area on Historiography of the International Relations and the problems that have come about. The author to cover topics such as Presentism as well as paradigms and the historiography of International Relations mainly focusing on Realism. He identifies issues as to why there is a lack of coherency and understanding in the history of the field and provide answers to his opposing questions. Schmidt perceives there to be too much emphasis of the present times of the discipline and as a result, the fields history is becoming distorted by those who only seek out particular points in history to support their theory. He finally not only was able to address and effectively restate the events of the Great Debates, but makes light of the complications that quietly surround these debates. In order to focus on foreign policy from 1920 to 1941 , one must put into consideration the World War I, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, and World War II’s emergence. These each took their own toll, and put a massive amount of American’s mindset’s upon the United States best interests, and those interests only. There are multiple examples of major changes in Africa that I could talk about for this exam. But being that I only need a few pages, I will focus on, for this exam, rise and end of the Malinke Empire and Songhay, the religious influences throughout Ethiopia, trading towns in the east of Africa, and most of the Iron Age societies. The examples of change will display how towns and kingdoms would come and go, the people settling there, or development of new productions and technology. I will then explain if the examples were of benefit or not to Africa’s continents for years to come.
The textbook, Modern World History: Patterns of Interaction by McDougal Littell, states that the causes of World War One is a narrative of multiple factors, but the underlying narrative that the textbook teaches is that the blame for the war on Germany. When the textbook cites nationalism as one of the reasons for the beginning of World War One the first country listed was Germany. Using a different form of periodization than most world historians, he is able to divide world history into 3 major eras along with subordinate eras. This is shown in the “Three Major Eras of World History” Chart on page 103 of the book. This Fleeting World focuses mostly on technological and social change when talking about the development of societies.

Constructivists reject such a one-sided material focus. They argue that the most important aspect of international relations is social, not material. Constructivists have demonstrated that ‘ideas matter’ in international relations. They have shown that culture and identity help define the interests and constitute the actors in IR. All students of IR should be familiar with the important debates raised by constructivists, about basic social theory and about the different ways in which ideas can matter in international relations.
The international relations schools of thought known as Realism and Idealism identify specific and similar characteristics of actors in the conceptual development of their theories. While many of these characteristics can be generalized as being synonymous with the two theories, both theories make a separate distinction in what specifically constitutes an actor. In Realism, the term “actor” refers directly and solely to the state: a combination of government, leaders, decision-makers, etc, that act as a unitary entity to promote the interests of the state. Idealists, however, expand on what constitutes an actor to include both the state and people. Not only do the principles of Idealism assert that the state and people should be considered actors, in fact, both they must be viewed as actors.
