Ishaan Jerabek Thematic Essay (the gun) The main theme in the gun, a realistic fiction story by Carol Ellis, is Your Actions have Consequences. The gun is a story about a teen aged boy named Derek who finds .38 caliber revolver in a vacant lot and picks it up he takes it to school and sort of shows it off. then after school he takes the gun and a friend to a wooded area near some train tracks. He shoots the gun at some bottles and cans stopping when the trains pass by Then when the gun is empty he goes and dumps the gun back where he found it. Derek and his friend Jerry then go down to a wooded area where there are trail track and Derek shoots the gun at some bottles and cans, stopping when the trains pass by. This theme is first …show more content…
However when Derek asked if he could leave the cops said no. Why he asked, “because at 4:30 yesterday afternoon a stray bullet from a .38 caliber revolver smashed through the window of the D train and into the head of a young woman” responded the cop. This quote is significant because it is a strong example of the theme. If Derek had never shot the gun the gun then he would never have killed a woman and wouldn't be going to jail. another theme that could be argued for is theme chance doesn’t always work for you of the gun could be interpreted as Chance Does not always work in your favor because it was chance that caused the gun to be lying in the empty lot as derek was passing by and chance that caused the bullet to go astray and hit the young woman i the head. However it was not chance that caused Derek to pick up the gun and it was not chance that lead Derek to shoot the gun near the train tracks. So the theme is not that Chance Does not always work in your favor. This shows that the theme Chance Does not always work in your favor cannot be the theme because it does not work with most of the story. The gun is a story about actions having consequences. If derek had not taken the gun and shot it near the railroad
"It's a toy truck. He's saying it's a toy truck." Florida police yell to the dispatcher as they try to safely arrest an autistic man, Arnaldo Rios, who has a toy truck pointed to his head. Police assume the truck is a weapon and try to arrest Rios. Arnaldo's therapist , an African-American by the name of Dr. Charles Kinsey, attempts to comfort and protect Rios as the police point guns and scream for him to lay on the ground with his hands up.
One way this is shown is on page 132, “‘Sulfuric acid,’ Freak says, raising up the gun and sighting along the barrel. ’Good old reliable H2SO4. This shows the theme because Freak is Max’s friend and it was a tough time, but Freak was a good friend and went looking for Max instead of not caring. If Freak was not Max’s friend, he might not of been saved and not of survived. Furthermore Freak and Max have a really good friendship.
Themes in a story help to describe what the book is about. It does this in the book Night by helping describe what World War 2 was like for the Jews. It also helps to see what the people in the camps went through. My two themes from night are imprisonment and survival. The first one I will talk about is imprisonment, then i’ll talk about survival.
We might find this issue to be small, but think about the millions of people who have their family killed by gun violence. The author want us to know by including descriptions on the setting of places such as the freeway “People get killed on freeways all the time” (159) The many moments that involve a gun actually have two meanings in the book. On one hand it signifies violence and destruction, in the story we see that Lauren’s journey up north witnesses countless acts with many guns: “One group chasing the other, both firing their guns as though they and their enemies were the only people in the world”(223). This not only shows us the brutal nature of people but also how people will use the guns to get what they want, knowing that it might kill someone.
This supports my theme because he claims to have given it to one of the people that are looking for it and again, he always seems to be the center of all the problems in the school. As the story is coming to an end, Brody Valentine starts to get cold feet. On page 9 of part 3, Brody wants to give up because he has been through a lot in that school year. This goes against my theme because Brody’s main mission is to never give up, follow signs and lead to great choices. In the last parts of the book, Brody Valentine learns that having people around you always helps with problems and overcoming fears.
Bayard Sartoris, a young man whose childhood was plagued by the atrocities of the Civil War, shapes his morals as time progresses. In the earlier stories, such as “Ambuscade”, Bayard is on the verge of becoming a man yet still acts quite childish. Upon reaching the final story, An “Odor in Verbena”, he is a different person than before. In The Unvanquished, Bayard Sartoris’s defining moment is when he bravely chooses to confront Redmond unarmed, showing that he has learned much about honor and courage from his father and matured as a person.
Making a bad excuse to leave the house. Tom bring his father's best dog and taking that out to “hunt.” Then he shoots the dog on accident and gets in big trouble. For stealing a gun and shooting his dog. For my theme it would be proud in my view then mad and or deprest.
Readers are given the opportunity to put this into perspective and ultimately associate guns with murder in the home, making Ivins argument more persuasive. “Did the gun kill someone? No. But if there had been no gun, no one would have died” (Ivins). Phrasing like this, undoubtedly sparks some form of emotion for readers, reflecting the author's attempt to influence their judgment on the existence of guns in American
Her livelihood has been ripped away from her and she no longer has control over her husband or her land. The gun represents that loss of control by killing the man that had caused in in the first place. “The Old Gun” is not the only text in which guns symbolize a loss of control; Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical Hamilton also follows that line of
America is a nation blossomed with prosperity, yet it is notorious for the proliferation of appalling violence and homicides. By focusing on the Columbine High School massacre, Michael Moore’s Bowling for Columbine explores the environment/causes that lead to shooting tragedies and exposes the culture of fear that governs the unstable American society. On April 20, 1999, two senior students, Erik Harris and Dylan Klebold, murdered 12 students and severely wounded 21 others with a 9mm carbine and a 12-gauge shotgun at Columbine High School. The bloodbath is directly related to the extensive accessibility of ammunitions. Through an investigation, Moore shockingly discovers that a Michigan local bank rewards free guns to customers who open new
The main theme in Stave 1 of A Christmas Carol is fear. This is the theme because there is a lot of unexpected things that happen and cause Scrooge to be afraid. Ebenezer Scrooge is faced with fear of death and harm. Most people expect to come home, eat dinner, and then go to bed, but for Scrooge he comes home and his peace of mind is shattered. As Scrooge goes through the step by step process of going to bed, frightening things continue to happen.
A weapon in the wrongs hands is the maximum danger humanity can face. Nowadays, violence and delinquency in society are viewed as the maximum problem solver. Humanity is full of chaos; hate and envy seize our souls. Guns are the ultimate security for some citizens but for others, these add to a feeling of defenselessness. Throughout history, any topic related to guns means a plethora of problems.
This scene comes into play when the principal calls Carl in his office to discuss something with him. It is found that the principal said, “Heard you’re selling weapons, son… I want a Glock, a 9mm semi with an extended mag... Can’t have my bullet going through the shooter into some innocent kid.” It uses the dramatic irony because we can assume that they want the guns to protect themselves but also the students at school as well. Yet the target is society with the topic of gun violence as the principal mentions how there was a shooting nearby.
In the story “The Monkey’s Paw” the theme is don’t mess with fate and this story elements like character, setting, and plot all help contribute to the theme. The character’s emotions, reaction, and actions are a significant role in revealing the theme. The setting, though not realized as much actually shapes the story too. As normal, plot most definitely contributes to the theme. The character’s reaction contributes to the theme.
A common trend in literature is characters changing over time as a repercussion of outside forces acting upon them.
