1. Over the past decade, there has been a growing concern over whether or not children should play football. This has become such a crucial question that divorced couples are taking the issue to court. Mr. and Mrs. Orsini have two polar views when it comes to allowing their son to play football. Mr. Orsini understands that studies indicate how playing the sport can cause concussions and other significant brain damage in children while Mrs.Orsini believes that her son is old enough to understand the risks of playing football and if that is what he desires than she should not stop him. Similar cases to this one have been brought to court throughout the country, but many custody officers are hesitant to make a decision as they do not want to promote that sports are risky and be liable for any injuries that …show more content…
2. The ethical issue present is whether or not divorced couples with opposing views have the right to permit their child to play football when health risks to the brain are involved.
3. The key ethical values at stake are accountability and fairness. Accountability is at stake because the parents in this case have to take the responsibility for the outcomes. Mr. Orsini’s position takes the stance that football is dangerous and those who play the game before the age of 12 are more likely to develop cognitive and behavioral problems in the future. If Mr. Orsini does not let his son play football, then he knows based on research and previous experiences that he is preventing his son from the dangers that can arise from playing the game. Mr. Orsini does not have full custody of his son which makes it difficult for him to completely prevent his son from playing football, which could give
In the true story based movie and the documentary, the dangers of head injuries in football are laid out for the viewer. Dr. Bennet Omalu discovered the brain injury chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE; however, the NFL was in denial about the effects football had on the brain and had on causing CTE. I believe that the NFL’s denial to the accusations were detrimental to many football players and that serious consideration should be taken into the way football is played overall. When Dr. Omalu originally diagnosed CTE on Mike Webster and the NFL denied that football was the cause for his death and disease.
The era of Football in America is slowly coming to a close. Football has been known as America’s sport next to baseball for many years now. The general physicality of every play isn’t(B3) matched by any other sport on the planet, and that is why football causes more injuries than any other sport on the professional, and youth levels. Parents are pulling their kids from their teams, even in the middle of the season because of the information that has been released over the past decade illuminating a big problem for the game.
Football is a very popular sport not only in American high schools and colleges, but also in the entire country of the United States. Is playing high school football worth the risk and harm inflicted to high school football players? This is the main question raised by the author, Raymond Schroth, in the article “Abolish High School Football.” In this article, Schroth talked about the disadvantages and harms of playing high school football to the players. Schroth argued that high school football should be abolished because it had contributed more harmful effects than benefits to football players.
People believe that concussions and deaths are the results of football, but the good outweighs the bad and the concussions can be prevented Football should not be banned because it keeps kids off the streets and into the classroom. In Michael Lewis’s “The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game,” a homeless boy is given a second chance by getting the opportunity to play football in high school. This heartwarming story about a teenager, Michael Oher, proves that football and other
Scholarly articles were evaluated to obtain information on this topic. While writing on this topic reasons why kids sustain brain injuries while playing football were exposed. Findings indicated that youth football can cause traumatic brain injuries. Should Kids Be Allowed To Play Football? Kids are just dying to play football; however, playing football can be harmful to kids in many ways.
Since children are not fully developed, it is morally reprehensible to allow them to play such a sport in which they can possibly have life-changing or life-ending injuries. Far too many high school athletes get concussions from playing football (Watson 35). Approximately 100,000 high schoolers report concussions each year
Countless numbers of schools are being sued due to player deaths and injuries affiliated with football every year. Bountiful numbers of parents let their kids play football; nonetheless, already knowing the risks associated with the sport, parents still want to sue the school cooperation for the incident. Although, many parents understand the risks they are taking and if their son gets hurt, they are taking responsibility in their own hands. “But his parents David and Lisa Schemm do not believe football is to blame for teenagers sudden death (Rahman).”
Health and contact sports are something parents worry about as over 500 deaths in the past 3 years from contact sports alone are making parents stand out against these sports and if the government doesn 't do anything about it the number of 7% overall contact sports drop will just keep getting lower and lower each time. Dr. William Speight also had this to say “Many other kids have suffered paralyzing spinal injuries”(Pennington). Kids being paralyzed is the fear for many athletes these days and the number f kids getting paralyzed has increases 2% which is equivalent to about 8,000 kids each year which is crazy to think about kids can 't play sports for the rest of thrie and maybe not be able to live their life because of it so next you hear mom or dad i wanna play sports your answer should be a simple NO. Kids under 10 need to stop playing contact sports because 45% of kids under 10 getting hurt are from contact sports and 5% of the time its ending that kids chances to play sports in the feature, Not to mention contact sports can also make kids go to their fullest and being burned out and although contact provide some kids will useful tools in life most of the time there is more negative than positive. Health, Age, Contact, parents, are some of the many reasons contact sports can be very dangerous for the youth.
For example, “Concussions have been a concern for professional athletes, but they’ve become more common among youth players too. Between 2001 and 2009, the number of kids under 19 visiting emergency rooms for concussions each year increased by 62 percent.” (Source #1). If kids didn’t play football, then nobody would have to worry about kids damaging their brain. Another example, “In many sports, physical contact is part of the game.
Why Your Children Should Not Play Football Yet. “Diagnosed concussions rose by nearly 32 percent in the NFL in the 2016 season” (Seifert). The concussions in the NFL are very high. If this sport is this dangerous at the level for grown men then it must be dangerous for children to play. If men can get hurt playing the game of football then a child certainly can get hurt playing this game as well.
Children being vulnerable to harmful situations, such as the ones listed above, is one of the main reasons that the total number of children participating in competitive sports has been diminishing over the last few
Summary In “Children Need to Play, Not Compete,” Jessica Statsky tries to demonstrate the negative effect of organized sports on the physical and psychological health of growing child. She claims that the games are not festive but they end up in the wrong development of a child’s brain. The coaches and parents have high hopes for their children that result in the pressure building. This changes the purpose of sports from teaching tolerance, teamwork and sportsmanship to merely winning by all means.
“In the U.S., about 30 million children and teens participate in some form of organized sports, and more than 3.5 million injuries each year” claims Stanford Children’s Health. It’s definitely true that competitive sports can cause all sorts of injuries from big to small. The media teaches people simply that sports leads to horrific injuries and can cause stress, but what the mainstream media hardly discusses are the great benefits of competitive sports. While there may be some negatives to competitive sports, that’s just life, and to add on to that; there are plenty of benefits which are sure to override to media’s facts. Kids should play competitive sports because competitive sports teach children powerful life lessons, contributes to their social and mental stability, and because of the physical gain competitive sports provides.
Children should be able to achieve their goals without having doubt that they might get injured through their journey. The National Football league is trying to avoid these types of injuries and I think that this
Have you ever heard parents complaining about a referee’s call? Most students have heard or done this themselves. Parents that are disruptive and do not respect the calls by athletic officials must be punished for their inappropriate behavior. The first part of our three part plan is to expel the unruly parent(s) for the rest of the game, and after ban them for a specific period of time. Expelling the parents for the game will be the simplest way to solve the problem temporarily.
