In the freshwater biome, the catfish has a unique role in many cycles and systems. The catfish is a predator for many organisms, but is also hunted by other animals. A catfish eats phytoplankton, zooplankton, frogs, insects, and chironomids, creatures similar to mosquitos. Catfish are hunted by humans, herons, ospreys, eagles, and some types of sunfish. When a catfish is decomposed, bacteria breaks it down into a simpler form of matter. The producers, phytoplankton, are eaten by the catfish, the consumer, who also eats other consumers, chironomids, frogs, and insects, and the catfish, after death, is decomposed by the bacteria present in the biome. Bacteria in the biome also decomposes all of the other organisms, whether they are consumers or producers. In the …show more content…
The presence of catfish lower the presence and amount of prey the catfish has. When catfish are removed from the biome, the prey population increases due to the lack of predatory creatures. The predators to the catfish also have their population lowered because of the lack of food. Catfish that have a territory that they are protecting, limit the amount of territories are available to other catfish. Catfish have many adaptations that enable them to survive. One adaptation that catfish have are their three barbels that give them protection. When the barbels come in contact with another organism, they sting the creature. The catfish has a great sense of smell, sight, and taste that help them navigate through murky waters. The good sight allows them to see clearly, the good sense of smell allows them to smell other organisms in the water, and the catfish has taste buds all over its entire body, allowing it to sense what is around it. The catfish is a unique organism because of its interdependence in the biome, roles in systems and cycles, interactions in the population, interactions with other populations, and how it adapts to biotic and abiotic
The experiment consisted of two sub-experiments that when synthesized together, successfully answered our main question. The first of the two sub-experiments focused on collecting data for the creation of a life table in which Daphnia magna were not in the presence of a predator such as Lepomis macrochirus, known in laymen’s terms as bluegill fish. The second of the two sub-experiments focused on collecting data for the creation of a life table as well, but this time the daphnia were subjected to an environment where bluegill fish were present. The collection of the data for the creation of the first lifetable without predation consisted of fourteen replicates or daphnia starting at age 3 and ending at varying ages depending on the mortality of each replicate group.
And the smallest zooplankton (called micro‐zooplankton), fell by about 90 percent.” Finally, dissolved oxygen in the river dropped by 15
The three spined stickleback fish has many unique traits. some of the most notable structural adaptive traits of this specie are the three spines and body armor. The three spines are sharp and located on the back forward of the dorsal fin. The lateral bony plates are located on each side of the body. These structural armors projecting from the back and pelvis can simultaneously flare out when the fish feels threatened as a defense against predatory vertebrates making it difficult for predators to swallow them.
This is one of the reasons why it got the name – Coat of Mail Fish. The hardy body makes it difficult for predators to be able to consume it. Also, the body has been found to help it adapt to various environments prevalent in a tank. It is important to mention that this fish is sturdy and can withstand most diseases that attack other fishes. The Port and Starboard Lightfish is easy to maintain and it can feed on anything that you give to it.
Pargon Fish Description: The Pargon fish is a fierce predator characterized by a long slender shape and a forked caudal fin. Although its scales can be appropriately described as large, iridescent and silvery; sometimes they appear to have a golden cast. This Pargon Fish has a colorful appearance ranging from light to dark shades making this species fascinating to look at. However, fish that live over sandy bottoms seem to have a much lighter appearance. Distinguished by large and sharp protruding teeth, the Tiger Fish’s jaw holds a series of replacement teeth, meant to take the place of any teeth that might be lost or so broken.
Cuttlefish are very interesting creatures. Their name is just one interesting thing about them. The word fish is in their name, but they are not actually fish. Cuttlefish are actually cephalopods in the order of Sepiodia, and are related to octopus and squid. There are many other interesting things about cuttlefish, like their ability to change color, their behavior, and their intelligence.
It is asserted that this increase in the number of salmon is due to a bottom-up effect, which increases resources salmon need, benefitting the species and allowing a population increase. An increase in water temperature has been shown to increase zooplankton populations, and this gives salmon fry a higher rate of survival. As temperatures have increased, salmon also develop faster and stay sheltered longer, evading predators more. When the water is at a cooler temperature, there are less zooplankton, slower fry development, and an increased vulnerability to predators. This observed increase in pink salmon populations has lead this species to have a top-down effect on other salmon species.
On the other hand, the importance of Daphnia in the food chain is significant as Daphnia is preyed upon by several aquatic organisms such as tadpoles, salamanders, aquatic insects, and many of small fish species. Ultimately, and by the end of the chain, food fish for human consumption could be affected as a result of the negative changes in Daphnia
here is Ean 's writing: The Electric Eel Story Electric eels are related to catfish. Electric eels are mammals. They need to come up to the water surface to breathe in air. They live in murky streams around the Amazon river.
When I get out of school I wanna be pro fisherman they make so much money just to fish. That will be the easy way to make money and have fun while you doing it but there are sometimes that you will no have fun. When I get old I rather not fish I rather have a job that is in a office or something but i'll be okay with just fishing the rest of my life. There are many jobs out there in this world
Bass are a predatory fish, this means that they have to eat other living animals to survive. To hunt, bass will hide in structure, such as a submerged log, or some grass and ambush their prey. When their prey swims by the fish will swim out quickly and eat the food. Bass will eat anything that swims, they will eat minnows, crawfish, frogs, worms and even mice and ducklings that fall into the water. Bass will also eat other fish and sometimes lizards that fall into the water.
Ever since the day I caught my first fish, I knew I wanted to have a career that involves fish and their ecosystem. It was only recently that I narrowed it down to wanting a job designing fishing supplies such as rods, reels, and lures. Doing so requires a degree in mechanical engineering. In high school, I had a lot of struggles that affected my grades. As a result, I did not get accepted anywhere and ended up deciding to attend MiraCosta College.
Intruding on the fresh water of six US states, roams the scaled head, large mouth, razor sharp teeth and protruding lower jaws of the Snakehead Fish. The life cycle of The Snakehead fish begins between June and July when females begin spawning. The female fish may lay up to 15,000 eggs one to five times per year. After 1 to 2 days, the eggs will hatch and be guarded by both parents. They feed on small crustaceans and fish larvae.
I have always hated snakes, fish and worms. When I was 5 and I caught my first bass you can only imagine how scared I was so of course I cried. Whenever I would go swimming as a kid I would splash the water before I went in to scare the fish away. I would have nightmares as a kid that big fish would get ahold of me and pull me under the water. I would then basically drown due to the fact that the fish would pull me into deep water and not let me go.
Louisiana marshes are disappearing pulling the state’s land into the Gulf of Mexico and turning into open water. This is due to coastal erosion, global warming, and the increase in human activity. These can and will affect New York and the rest of the country just as much as it is going to affect Louisiana, which is why this issue should not only drawn to the attention of New York, nevertheless in other states too. Tax money contributed by New York and other states combined can help prevent the state from ever so slowly disappear. Coastal erosion is when land wears away due to currents, drainage, or high winds.
