The impact of territorial expansion on the sectionalism in America In the Mid 1800s, due to manifest destiny, America was quickly expanding. However, a major effect of this rapid growth was the division of a nation, also known as sectionalism. Sectionalism is ones pride in their section and during the mid 1800’s, the recognized "sections" were the North and the South. When analyzing the causes and effects of sectionalism on the civil war, it can be concluded that territorial expansion played a huge part politically, economically, and socially. In the beginning, it was common for Americans to simply feel pride in their nation, or to have nationalism, and while the South and the North did have their dissimilarities, they were not opponents- this was until territorial expansion threatened the existence of slavery, the South’s foundation. The most important and most notable difference between the north and the south was slavery and with land expansion the question of slavery and its existence in the new states arose- if the new states were to be slave …show more content…
At the time, the states were evenly divided between anti-slave states (northern) and slave states (southern) and with Missouri's entrance; there would be more slave than non-slave states. Therefore, this addition to the slave states would be a win for the South, however, shortly after Missouri applied to join the union, Maine applied as well and as a free state. The compromise that came from this time period was set so Missouri was to be added as a slave state, Maine was to be added as a free state, and any territories north of the latitude 36,30 would be deemed free states as they apply to enter into the union, this compromise is known as the Missouri compromise. This compromise marked the start of a downward spiral towards war and from this point on sectional tensions only
Before the South‘s secession the Missouri compromise helped a lot in keeping balance. After Missouri requested to be a slave state to the Union, Congress knew that it would cause an uproar between states that were and weren‘t slave oriented. Due to this, the Congress created the Missouri compromise to keep balance between everybody. On May 3, 1920 the compromise was put in place which meant that it set Maine as a free state and Missouri as a slave state still creating perfect balance. As the Missouri compromise was in place it was condemned by plenty of Southerners but even with that it lasted and kept peace with everyone as well as help keep the Union together for more than thirty years.
Leslie Chihuahua United States History to 1877 11/13/2015 11:00-11:50 AM Missouri Compromise was an agreement from the House of Representatives to reach a median to keep slavery out of Missouri after all the tribulations it had caused before it became a state. Henry Clay, Speaker of the House made important decisions in order for Missouri to be admitted as a state that could impact American history. In 1819, slavery was a resourceful profit to slave owners and this sparked a sectional controversy in the country over the efforts to expand slavery into the new western territories. The country had 22 states, eleven free eleven slave, and the line between them were distinguished by the northern and western boundaries of Pennsylvania and the Ohio River. (Txt.
The North, which were anti-slavery, argued that Congress had the power to prohibit slavery in the new state. Meanwhile, the South, which were pro-slavery, believed that states, rather than the government, should have the right to decide whether they wanted slavery or not therefore they argued that the State of Missouri had the right to decide whether they wanted to be a slave state or not and that it should not be up to the Congress to decide. In an effort to preserve the balance of power in Congress between slave and free states, Congress passed the Missouri Compromise which allowed Missouri to be a slave state and allowed Maine into the Union as a free state to resolve crisis, which a member of Congress, Henry Clay, offered. The history surrounding the nineteenth century led to the establishment of the Missouri
How did it lead to the Civil War? What is nationalism? How can/do citizens/patriots show nationalism? -Sectionalism is someone's loyalty to a section of a country instead of the country as a whole. Sectionalism hurt the United States because it made people focus on only the part of the country they lived in instead of helping or worrying about the country as a whole.
The Civil war did reduce the sectional antagonism in the Northern and Southern states. Lincoln was a major factor in the changing of this country, he fought for slavery but not necessarily for their freedom but because of the economy and how the enslaved worked in the South: the South were more agricultural based and the North were more industrial based. The Northern and Southern cultures were established. This sectionalism was the reason that ultimately led to the Civil War. However, this sectional antagonism faded away by the end of the 19th century and it “ultimately made the United States truly ‘one nation”.
Initially, the first Missouri compromise of 1820 was an agreement between South and North involving primarily the regulation of slavery in the western territory. It prohibited slavery in the former Louisiana Territory north of the parallel of 36, 30' line except within the boundary of the proposed state of Missouri. In other words, the imaginary 36, 30 lines across the southern border of Missouri stated that anything above that line is a free state and anything below that line is a sate. The issue of this compromise was that the admission of Missouri as a slave state would give slave states (southern) control over the senate. This crisis was averted when Maine was admitted to the union to balance out the states.
In America in the 1840s and 1850s the north were growing industrially and relying on factories while the south was still rural and all about agriculture the two were growing apart. There became the debate over slavery and the north saw it has morally wrong while the south saw no problem with it. In the 1860s the south finally seceded from the union when Lincoln became president. In effort to try and help with issues there became many compromises like the compromise of 1850. While some believe the civil war started over “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” there is historical evidence that shows that the real causes for the secession of the southern states and the starting of the civil war to force them back into the union, were overwhelmingly the caning of
At the start of the 19th century the United States was beginning to grow in size and by the 1850’s the nation had tripled. Many factors accounted for this great wave of expansion, upon the most important were the hopes and aspirations of many white American men moving westward and acquiring new territories. Initially the plan to move westward seemed to boost national unity, but the advancement and industrialization of the north seemed to leave the south at a disadvantage, and the issue of slavery between states rose, ultimately creating extreme sectionalism between the north and south, forcing the nation into the Civil War. In the early 1800’s
The admission of Missouri to the Union was met with discontent because many believed it would disrupt the tranquility of having an even number of slave states and free states. The solution was raised to admit the newest northern state of Maine into the union as a free state, maintaining the balance. After this decision was made, they banned slavery in the new territories above the latitude of 36°30’. This solution was referred to as the Missouri Compromise. This may have been seen a victory because of its limitation on the spread of slavery, but the compromise also led to slavery also becoming more deep-seated in the southern way of
When the United States won the US-Mexican war, The U.S was in possession of present day Utah, California, and New Mexico. This expanded the United States all the way to the Pacific Coast. With that in mind, Missouri requested to enter the Union as a slave state, It was going to upset the balance of slave and free states. Congress in desperation to keep the state 's unified, passed an amendment allowing Missouri entrance as a slave states. Congress, to keep the balance, allowed Maine to enter as a free state.
The 1800s was a trying time for our developing union; from the war on slavery to the birth of the Underground Railroad, it was a period of growth. In addition, several states were admitted to the union- California, Maine, and Missouri to name a few. With all this growth will inevitably come struggles; sectionalism to be exact. Sectionalism occurs when a group/region is so focused on their own agenda, they neglect national issues in the process. Southerners were so fixed on maintaining slavery, while Northerners fought so harshly to abolish it.
Sectionalism The definition of the word sectionalism is the restriction of interest to a narrow sphere. There were 3 main sections that practiced sectionalism in the 1800s. These sections were the North, the South, and the West. A few events that created sectional conflict were tariffs, slavery, representation, and states rights.
Although in the Missouri Compromise, Missouri became a slave state and Maine became a free state, it was an example of disunity. All new states north of the Mason-Dixon Line would be free and new states southward would be slave states. As a result, there was also an unbalanced sectional population between the North and South. (Doc. E & F).
The Missouri Compromise greatly limited the growth and development of slavery in the United States. It allowed Missouri to become a state, and to allow slaves, and Maine, as a free state. The compromise also prohibited the practice of slavery in the northern portion of the Louisiana Territory. By this time, the importation of slaves from Africa had been outlawed, and they could only be purchased within the country. This meant also meant, that states that entered would be free states.
The issue the compromise was about was whether there should be slavery in the western territories. Maine wanted to be added to the Union, however, slavery was banned there. If Maine were to be added to the Union, it would upset the balance between free and slave states in the nation and the Senate. So, the Missouri Compromise, proposed by Senator Henry Clay, allowed Maine to enter the Union as a free state, and allowed Missouri to be entered into the Union as a slave state.
