The wage gap disparity against women and racial groups is extremely important to acknowledge because it is a violation of equal rights. Not only unequal pay disparity against women is discrimination, but it also discriminatory based on race. The pay gap also affects the economy and society. How does unequal gender pay affect society, women would not feel discriminate and the economy will be better. Poverty levels for all working women would be cut in half, falling from 8.0 percent to 3.8 percent (Institute for Women’s Policy Research). Therefore, individuals are more likely to blame other causes to a problem such as women only work part-time, that admitting the actual problem of the gender pay gap disparity is due to discrimination against women. This could be a reason why some people believe the wage gap is a myth and if it does exist they are more likely to blame the wage disparity on women and not discrimination. However, according to Barbara Wagner, on her paper “The Complex Causes of the Gender Pay Gap” points out that there is a certain percentage in the wage gap that can be explain to other factors; although, there is a percentage left that it cannot be explain and is more likely to be the cause of discrimination. The gender wage gap as stablish above is discrimination against women. In more recent studies labor statistics have found racial wage gap, which affects non-white women the most as well non-white men. Meaning, that even though there is a gender wage disparity in the labor market, there is also racial wage gap discrimination against non-white women and non-white men. Unfortunately, there is much racial discrimination today in society and in the workplace against certain racial groups. For example, “American employers tend to prefer white workers over black ones” (Djamba, and Kimuna). When American employers prefer to offer only jobs to white workers than non-white workers, it causes discrimination and racism because employers have a different concept towards none-whit workers; therefore, employers offer low pay salaries to blacks, Hispanic, and other minority groups. However, some people had said that Hispanics women make more money than white women; according to Peter Mchenry on his paper Estimating Hispanic-White Wage Gaps Among Women: The Importance of Controlling for Cost of Living, argues that “Hispanic women nurses and K-12 teachers get a higher salary than white women.” Therefore, many seem to believe that there is no racial wage gap against women from different ethnicities. Majority of the workers in nearly all the most dangerous occupations, such as iron workers and loggers, are male, and 92 percent of work-related deaths in 2012 were to men. Males are also more likely to pursue occupations where compensation is risky from year to year, such as finance and law. Research shows that average pay in such jobs is higher to compensate for the risk. A contributing factor leading to gender inequality and segregation in the workforce is geographic location. This refers to the general identification and location of individuals and or data (Jones, 2015) and no matter where you are based in the world, there will always be gender inequality and segregation in the workforce. So many people have had issues with this wage gap, people with different colored skin to what gender they are. There are women who will get paid 75% of what men get paid just because of their jobs or because people think that they should get paid less because they get stuck with the housework or they are taking care of the elders. To me that is ridiculous, women and men shouldn’t be getting paid the way people see them. Most people think that men have harder jobs and women get the easier jobs but, that isn’t always true.
Though there are more women in the work force now more than ever, they are still being paid less than men for doing the same job. Three explanations for the wage gap between men and women are discrimination, human capital and organizations of jobs. A group theorists who believe the wage gap is a result of discrimination are called bias theorists. Aulette and Wittner state that bias theorists believe that “decisions about who will be hired, promoted, fired and what an employee will be paid are made in ways discriminate against women” (189). The gap between men and women has always seemed to be prevalent in our world it seems like it. From working wages to basic rights, women always seem to not be considered equal to men. In professional sports, for example, female athletes are paid less than their male counterparts, even if they execute better than them. "I cannot think of any other industry that has such a wage gap, really. Besides white women being paid less than men, more culturally diverse people are being paid even less than them. This means that in 2010, the average female made 23% less in yearly earnings compared to men. Ethnicity can also be included to explain the wage gap. This can be explained by the statistic; Asian males make the most money compared to all other racial groups (Median, 2012). The symbolic interactionism view on gender can be explained as “Gender is learned through the process of socialization; gender inequalities are reproduced through interactions with family, peers, schools, and the media” (Ferris & Stein, 2014 pg 247).
But now that I understand the term I realized that I too, assumed that all women in America were concern with the pay wage gap between men and women. In most careers, women make much less money than men do for doing the same exact job. I thought all women prioritized this awful pay wage gap until I realized that I prioritize this unequal pay gap because I am a Caucasian female but, for instance, an African American woman may prioritize the injustices she may face while trying to get employed over the unequal pay gap.
