"I am no bird; and no net ensares me; I am a free human being with independent will." These words from Charlotte Brontë(a British writer) in Jane Eyre describe Cat's change in Kate Messner's Wake Up Missing. Cat, the protagonist, goes on a journey to rediscover herself in the novel. After receiving a concussion from falling out of a tree stand while bird watching, Cat goes to I-CAN(a "top head injury clinic" in a Florida swamp) to receive treatment. At the end just before the kids defeat Dr.Ames by letting hiim fall prey to an alligator, Dr.Gunther allows Cat to get away with Ames's laptop. After defeating Dr.Ames, Dr.Gunther's leg is broken from falling over a log. Cat, with other evidence from an overheard conversation, comes to the conclusion that Dr. Gunther was forced to be part of the plot to transform the kids. The other kids agree that Dr.Gunther should not be spared and taken with them on their return(Dr. Gunther cannot walk because of his leg). Cat reasons with them and tells them her thoughts abour Dr. Gunther; the other kids distrustfully bring along Dr. Gunther. Also, after she reunites with her family, Cat says "Maybe that means we'll be friends again[she and Lucy], but I won't give up who I am to make it happen." The journey at I-CAN shaped Cat and set her free. Cat changed from molded to independent and adaptive. The danger of the swamp helped Cat discover her inner abilites and characteristics. She used her smarts to adapt to new situations and dangers the kids might face.. Also, at the end, she made a resolution to forever to be herself. Cat's impactful venture in the swamp dramatically changed her character and

Wake up From the Night Wake up From the Night Cruelty surrounds the world constantly, and frequently appears in works of literature to reveal certain things about the theme. In the novel Night by Elie Wiesel, these acts of cruelty express and enhance the theme. One of the large themes revealed by these acts is “man’s inhumanity to man,” which includes the mistreatment of Jews by the Nazis, the common people, and other Jews. Watching the large amounts of violence, abuse, and discrimination that occur in this memoir show us the horrors of the Holocaust and how it transformed the men and women who experienced it, as well as those who caused it.

I believe if she was as close to her parents as she claimed, they would have recognized the change in their daughter. Aside from the negative aspects of this book it was a suspenseful read. The journal format that the book is written in makes it much more interesting because it is explained in the words of the narrator herself. It allows the readers to have a closer connection to the character and allows us to enter her thoughts. In my opinion this makes the ending much more tragic.

She stopped seeing deafness as a misfortune, but more as a blessing as shown with the birth of her deaf grandchildren whos he adored greatly. I enjoyed this book because I had the opportunity to see what life is like for deaf families. I have always wondered how life for them is different when it comes to education, communication, and growing up. I know that if I became the mother of a deaf child, I would go through everything Tressa had gone through and more.
