Throughout the history of correctional officers, they have play an essential role on the behavior of inmates. A Correctional officer job is “a person who is responsible for the supervision safety, and security of person’s in prison” (correctionalofficer.org). People should know that correctional officer are in danger when they are working in prisons because they are containing people who committed murders, robberies, or drug crimes. There has been studies that have examined correctional officer’s level of stress and attitudes towards inmates. (Sagepub). In the article “Changing Inmates Behavior” by John Watkins, he discusses different ways a correctional officer can change an inmate’s behavior. It has been said that “criminal subculture is the most important dynamic in the correctional institution,” (Watkins). Some subculture have norms and values that enforce them to cause violence. For example, if an individual wants to join a gang, he must kill or rob another individual to earn their respect. In jails the individual who are locked up “come into an institution with very little prior experience of living in jails,” (Watkins). Others, are college students caught with drugs, and the regular, “the man who teaches the new people the ways of the subculture,” (Watkins). The new incomers would need to adapt to a new culture in jail. People who are in jails feel hostile, angry or aggressive because they are living with others in small cell. Many of these inmate cannot really expressed themselves, Watkins states, “These men are not allowed to express their anger at their captors’ yet their captors pick up the anger directed at them and return it openly,” (Watkins). It seems that some correctional officer are harsh to inmates, which makes inmates have a negative attitude. This article discusses how badly the corrections officers treat the inmates at Mid-State Correctional Facility in New York. The inmates are beaten and penetrated by foreign objects by the officers that are supposed protect them. Not only are they mistreating the inmates but they are getting away with it as well. There are many instances and examples of inmates from this specific facility, Mid-State Correctional Facility, getting beaten by guards. These allegations of brutality against the inmates are going more viral now than ever.

What it means when people say working in corrections can be morally challenging for employees is that there are many opportunities for people to participate in wrongful, unethical behavior that goes against what they know to be right. b. Some temptations that might exist for those working in corrections are theft (such as taking money or other personal items from inmates), taking bribes to either smuggle in prohibited items or to receive special privileges while in prison, embezzlement and also partaking in sexual misconduct, either with staff, inmates or an inmate’s family/friends (Braswell, McCarthy and McCarthy, 2017, p. 282-283) 2. What impact does prison corruption have on the criminal justice system? a. Prison corruption has a negative impact on the criminal justice system. “Corrupt practices undermine and erode respect for the justice system both by offenders and the general public” (Braswell, McCarthy and McCarthy, 2017, p.280).
The inmates were treated so poorly that they felt they needed to retaliate against the guards. Working in a prison is a possible career choice for me, this book taught me issues that can arise while working in a prison. As a correctional officer, I want to be a productive and effective, I will be friendly with the inmates but not become friends. Treating them with respect will often times result in them giving respect back, which will make them trust and respect your authority. I will be attentive of my surroundings and inmate interactions.
Some of these temporary officers were not interested in making corrections as a career that resulted in high turnover rates. These guards were paid at the lower end of the salary scale and a lack of advancement opportunities that brought dissatisfactions. Prisons in the 1971 were a truly horrific place. Not only were criminals being punished by incarceration but they were being day in and day out by cruelty of the prison staff. This corrupt system of retribution became evident to a man named Philip G. Zimbardo. Zimbardo’s initial aim of the Stanford Prison experiment was to determine if it was the environment or if it was the conflicting personalities between guards and criminals that brought about the brutality in prisons. The experiment developed into something more abstract.
Prisonization is defined in the text as “The process whereby newly institutionalized offenders come to accept prison lifestyles and criminal values” (Schmalleger, 2015). This is the roles and characteristics that a prisoner will learn when they socialize with other inmates in the similar lifestyle.
