The Betrayal of Anney Boatwright in Bastard Out of Carolina
Thrust into motherhood at the age of fourteen Anney Boatwright sets out to prove she is a good caring mother. Throughout a Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison, she provides examples of Anney Boatwright as a loving mother of Reese and Bone, but then instances occur that show that might not be true. This essay will show that Anney Boatwright appears to love and care about her family, but fails as a mother because she lacks introspect, puts her daughters at risk, and abandons her family.
Anney Boatwright shows time and time again that she lacks introspect, which repeatedly has a negative impact on her family. She marries Glen Waddell, who appears charming, but has a darker side. His darker side appears when Glen turns Reese’s grandma’s brother Matthew away and refuses to let Anney sign anything without him present. When it’s clear that Glen is wrong in his actions towards the Parsons, Anney is angry at Glen; at first. She then acts as though what he is doing is what’s right for his family. Anney tells Bone “…Glen needs to take care of this, you understand? He needs to do it, and I’ve got to let him.” (Allison 56-57). When Glen shows his anger once again and yells at her to shut up, and he then quickly apologizes,

Her grandma tries to warn her when she first meets Glen about the trouble he could be, but she ignores her saying that her granny doesn’t know him like she does. Glen and Anney get married, and Glen becomes quite skilled with hiding what goes on behind closed doors with Bone. He is not afraid to openly abuse her in front of Anney though, who then does nothing short of yelling. Glen grabs Bone drags her into the bathroom, and slams her shoulder into the frame. Anney cries for him to stop, but does nothing to stop him from beating her daughter (Allison
“I know about you and Clay.” … “It is an unfortunate situation,’ Mrs.Derby said with feeling. “But I have no control over what he does. To tell you the truth I have very little power over anything around here,’ she said morosely. ‘I just want to let you know I sympathize.
Brothers, they're supposed to be part time enemies part time bestfriends that you can trust and tell all your secrets to. But Paul Fisher’s Brother is probably a full time demonic demon. Erik Fisher (Paul’s Brother) has tormented Paul since he was 5 years old and has been Paul’s worst nightmare. But although Erik is a complete waste of human flesh, He does teach Paul one imperative lesson. In Edward Bloor’s Tangerine, Erik Fisher has mostly been an enemy to Paul but he does give Paul a statement to live by.
In South of Broad by Pat Conroy the theme is appreciate people for who they are. Leo has a very diverse group of best friends that are not accepted by the community at this period of time. Trevor is gay, Sheba likes to sleep around, Ike and Betty are African-Americans in a town that still has not accepted blacks, and Niles and Starla are orphans from the mountains. This group is not exactly a perfect group for most families back in the 60's. In chapter 15 Sheba needs help looking for her brother in San Fransisco who is dying of AIDS.
Mr. Fisher's actions led to the main dispute of the story, especially the parts that involved Erik. Though he had two sons, he only treated one of them with respect. Paul did not receive the attention he deserved from his father, which was a large part of his experience in Tangerine Florida. However, in the conclusion of the book, these experiences would also lead him to become a better person and reveal the truth to everyone. Mr. Fisher chose to ignore the fact that Erik had an unacceptable personality despite all of the evidence, which makes Paul feel that his senses are lying to him even when he has proof of Erik’s wrongdoings, and creates excuses for everything Erik does wrong, turning him into the opposite of what he undoubtedly is.
The doctor at the hospital suspects abuse but Anney and Bone diffuse the situation by denying this claim. After the accusation from the doctor Anney seems to be shook up from the situation and leaves Glen. But her short lived abandonment last two weeks before she goes back to Glen. However Anney does try to keep Bone away from him as much as possible by taking Bone to work with her but even that is not good enough because he eventually goes back to beating Bone.
“Why does this have to happen to us?” my brother questioned. “We don’t know that yet Ethan.” my mother said. Everyone wasn’t in a very happy mood at that
Stuff like this didn't happen in any of our houses. I tried not to stare at the ceiling, but I had this totally helpless feeling there nothing I could do for her” (Plum-Ucci 74). This quote shows how Torey was able to step into Ali’s shoes to find out how she was feeling, even though he had not gone through what was happening to Ali. Torey would have trouble with this had he not learned how he affected Chris’s feelings. When Torey learned that he had a part in how Chris was feeling, he started to learn to see behind someone’s reputation and step into people’s shoes to understand the pain they are going through, like he did with
In Zora Neale Hurston’s novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, the story revolves around the protagonist, Janie’s, experiences in three different marriages. First, with a man named Logan Killicks who has the money and land to provide Janie with security. Then, a rich leader and pioneer named Joe Starks. And finally, with a young man who could only provide Janie with his love and best effort, Tea Cake. Although these three relationships never lasted, through each relationship Janie was able to grow.
Crooks tends to hide his pleasure when Lennie comes to set, whereas Curley’s wife is straightforward and tells Lennie that she wants to talk to someone. When Lennie sees a light in Crooks room and comes in to chat, Crooks reacts very aggressively and tries to kick him out. As he
When Minnie marries Cal, Gander has some resentment of his sister and Cal’s relationship and this resentment changes his relationship with his sister making it more divided and in some ways more awkward. One of the main protagonists, Mama, is telling her son the reasons for what she did to help her family’s struggle. She says, “When it gets like that in life-you just got to do something different, push on out and do something bigger....” (588). The character Mama gets a check from the insurance company for $10,000 dollars due to her husband’s death and she doesn't know what to do with it. In the play, A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, Mama is motivated to/by the chance to get her family a house.
The love of a child can be one of the core motivators for a parent, and the deep desire that a parent has for their child to succeed, can often trump any kind of sense of morality that a person may have. This deep kind of love begs the question of how much love is too much, and if that love is threatened, what extreme consequences may occur. Old Woman Magoun, in Mary E. Wilkins Freeman’s Old Woman Magoun, puts her love for her granddaughter above her her sense of morality, and in the same way, Pau Lin in Sui Sin Far’s The Wisdom of the New, shows the desperation that parents can have. Parents and even guardians need to be careful of selfish love, and of how much this love can cater to their own needs and desires. Old Woman Magoun is a desperate, fearful, overprotective woman that clings to her granddaughter, as if she is her own.

I believe it is possible to grow and change as life experiences are thrown at you. Sometimes for the good and other for the bad. Huckleberry Finn, I believe, is a protagonist. He is the main character in Mark Twain’s story, as the title itself indicates, and he is directly involved in the conflict of the story. Huck is presented with many controversies throughout the story and situations that help him grow into the character he is.
