In the story of The Prince and the Pauper, the main characters are Edward Tudor Prince of Wales and Tom Canty, a pauper, who eventually unwittingly switched identities. Prince Edward is a prideful, self-centered, but honest person in the beginning of the story. However, throughout his adventure the experiences and hardships he suffers through change him for the better. His pride as the prince over time changes into humility, his self-centeredness develops into sympathy and feeling righteous indignation for others. However, the prince continued to be honest and truthful throughout his adventure well into becoming king, even though it would get him into trouble. In the story of The Prince and the Pauper, the prince lived a mostly immoral life as a prideful, self-centered, but honest person until his conversion to leading a moral life as a venerable King. Throughout the story, Edward changes over time from a prideful prince to a humble venerable king. Correspondingly, in the beginning, when the prince has problems with the Christ’s Hospital boys mocking him, he would attempt to resolve it with a prideful royal edict. Furthermore, when he learned of his father 's death the former king, he immediately fills with pride from the thought “how grand and strange it seems – I AM KING!” Conversely, when the new venerable king finds acceptance in the home of a good wife, he humbles himself to the family level while eating breakfast, instead of being imperious requiring her family
