Another scene where the power relation between silence (inferiority) and voice (superiority) is involved can be found in the final chapter of The Woman Warrior. When Kingston finds her schoolmate’s sister who hardly talks standing alone in front of the school, she lures the silent girl to the lavatory and tortures her until she would break the silence. Kingston told her: “You’re going to talk, […] I am going to make you talk, you sissy-girl [emphasis added]” (Kingston 175). Here, Kingston chooses the role as the person in power, whereas her schoolmate is chosen to be the weaker one. It is said: “’The first thing you have to learn,’ the old woman [said], ‘is how to be quiet’” (Kingston 23). During the preparation to become a female warrior, she learns how to communicate without the articulation of language. As a result, she becomes a powerful woman (see Parrott), who can fight instead of her father in the army. Furthermore, she does not tell her fellow soldiers her gender, which protects her. Kingston/Fa Mu Lan says: “I never told them the truth. Chinese executed women who disguised themselves as soldiers or students, no matter how bravely they fought or how high they scored on the examinations” (Kingston 39). Thus, by putting on male clothes and the choice of silence, she becomes a strong woman (Parrott ). Unfortunately, silence as a powerful discourse and “weapon against her enemies” (Parrott ) only seems to work in the fictionalized tale of Fa Mu Lan. Towards the end of the second chapter, Kingston realizes that she cannot use silence as a weapon in the real world. When she has to confront her racist boss at work, who throws discriminating words such as “nigger yellow” (Kingston 48) to her, she is unable to stand up against him but remains silent. In other words, Parrott says that being silenced against one’s will is a “violent repression of statement”, whereas the choice of silence “represent[s…] empowerment”

The war had awakened a new class consciousness through the struggle over who would rule and who would fight. Slaves and Indians began to see their way of life change by the outcome of the war and women began to expand their role within the home. But, not all things changed for these groups.
The Warriors Ethos is a book written by Steven Pressfield, which was published in 2011. The book highlights a very rich history of warriors and their supporters alike. Maxine Hong Kingston's use of talk stories in The Woman Warrior emphasizes that individuals will find a more fulfilling life if they defy the traditional gender norms place on them by society. While contemplating beauty standards in Chinese society in “No Name Woman” Maxine Kingston thinks, “Sister used to sit on their beds and cry together… as their mothers or their slaves removed the bandages for a few minutes each night and let the blood gush back into their veins” (9). From a young age girls are expected to be binding their feet and are told that it is to look beautiful, but in reality that is not why. When a womans feet are bound they are restrained and silenced. These girls could be free and happy but they are restrained by men through this binding.

Nineteenth century America was a time when women were expected to follow the cult of domesticity, a widely accepted opinion at the time. While fathers, brothers, sons, husbands and other male loved ones went off to fight in the American Civil War, women were left behind to take care of the remaining members of the family. “It was in the home that woman’s influence was paramount and her position assured.” For some women, this was enough, however, there were others who were not satisfied with this idea, and felt as though they were meant to become something more. However, there were some opportunities for women to step outside of the social customs and gender roles of the time.
The famous English poet Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel. It is to bring another out of his bad sense into your good sense”. Although voice is undoubtedly one of the most powerful and versatile assets humans possess, simply having a good voice does not ensure power. This idea is well illustrated in Alan Paton’s Cry the Beloved Country where Paton creates characters that have powerful voices but lack other essential qualities necessary to become powerful leaders. Set in a time where racial tensions between the blacks and the whites are at their highest, Africa is in desperate need of a gifted leader who can step up and guide the people to glory.
“Her actions remind me that, even under unbearable circumstances, one can still believe in justice,” in David Henry Hwang’s foreword, in Ji-Li Jiang’s memoir Red Scarf Girl, commemorated even during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution anyone can overcome adversity (9). Ji-Li Jiang was a young teenager at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution, and living through a very political time in China’s history made Ji-Li into the person she is today. Ji-Li’s intelligence, her choices, and family devotion made her into the headstrong and successful person she is today. Even when Ji-li thought she was unintelligent, others saw she was wise. There were many moments when Ji-Li was reminded she was very smart.
Burak defines gender socialization as “the process of interaction through which we learn the gender norms of our culture and acquire a sense of ourselves as feminine, masculine, or even androgynous” (Burack, 1). According to Burack, people of different genders behave differently not due to biological factors, but due to socialization that teaches individuals to behave in a particular way in order to belong to a certain gender. For example, women may tend to be nurturing, not because they are biologically programed to be caretakers, but as a result of society teaching them through toys and media to act as mothers. The Woman Warrior is a “memoir of a girlhood among ghosts” in which Maxine Hong Kingston recounts her experiences as a second generation immigrant. She tells the story of her childhood by intertwining Chinese talk-story and personal experience, filling in the gaps in her memory with assumptions. The Woman Warrior dismantles the archetype of the typical mother-daughter relationship by suggesting that diaspora redefines archetypes by combining conflicting societal norms. A mother’s typical role in a mother-daughter relationship is one of guidance and leadership. Parents are responsible for teaching a child right from wrong and good from evil.
In the novel Purple Hibiscus, the reader spends the entire novel waiting for Kambili to transition from a character of silence and submission into an outspoken and self-entitled woman -- something that doesn’t fully happen by the end of the book.
