Chicano Culture
Dear (Name), Last week, I read a very intriguing article about a Mexican Chicano culture and thought it would be important to let you know about it. The article described the origin, the etymology, different scenarios where the name is used, its distinction from other related cultures, different identification cultures and the social, political and cultural aspects. Chicana as the culture is also known is an identity which is chosen by a group of Americans who live in the US. The title is often used interchangeably to refer to a Mexican American. Both names have their origin from the Mexican American community. The titles have a wide range of connotations in the various parts of the country. Chicano became a widely used name for the period of the Chicano Movement where the Mexican Americans expressed their pride in their culture through shared community, cultural and ethnic identities.

With time, the term gained more popularity and it was used more often than before. However, even after this period, many Mexican Americans viewed the term as distracting as it represented the refusal to be identified. It is for this reason that most people still find it hard to identify themselves with the term. The Mexican American culture dates back to the era of slavery where the Indian people were being colonized by the Spanish. The pro-native nature of Chicano nationalism is based on the nature of the Mexican national identity in which the culture is heavily induced in the Spanish and indigenous cultures. In the textbook “From Indians To Chicanos”, the author’s, James Diego Vigil, purpose for writing this book is to educate about the history of Chicanos, their experiences, and what changed their lifestyle. James Diego Vigil’s objective for this book is to write about the Chicano culture and how it has changed for ethnic minority groups due to time and different geographical and socioeconomic settings. He also addresses how the Chicano experience motivated Chicanos to dedicate themselves to shape their own identity and refuse to accept outside ideas and theories about them, about their identities. In the 1960s during the civil rights movements the Raza unida party was created. The group was focused on building mexican american nationalism to help fight the injustices they had to face just because of where they were from and there skin color. Along with the Raza party there was the chicano movement and they were also trying to change the way mexican americans are treated. The chicano movement was very similar to the black power movement and was fighting for better treatment among the latino community.

This is because the movement itself began as a search for identity in a nation where Chicanos where once classified as White, but never received any of the rights associated with it and where later reclassified as Hispanic. It is also because what was once considered Mexican culture is no more as it has been taken, manipulated, and killed by the Anglos in their conquest. In “I am Joaquin” we see this concept throughout the work in a variety of forms that range from what Mexicans are to the concept of being Chicano. One major example of the search for Identity in the work is shown in the beginning with the paradox question where many young Chicanos are forced to choose between cultural life in poverty or stability at the price of their culture. Basically it states that they must choose between embracing their heritage at the cost of stability or to reject it and conform to the Anglo world and have a chance to be successful.
Culture is an essential part of a community’s identity, because it links individuals to a collective bond. The Americas have always contained a vast variety of cultural communities, especially in the United States. The US is known for being one of the most diverse nations in the world, housing hundreds of different cultures. Mexican-Americans display a strong sense of a cultural background, which falls as a subset of the bigger Latino culture that links all Latinos. Oral history is a major aspect on the Mexican culture, which contributes to the truth of how history in the United States actually happened.
From each decade that has passed Chicano, music has taken musical changes and has incorporated this to create their type of sound. The different influences brought about what makes Chicano music its own. It is a musical style with roots in the intercultural conflicts and experiences from Anglos and Mexicans (Ortega). In the end what makes Chicano music different than other types of music is that it has a unique set of sounds, genres, linguistic mixing, poetry and political thought is the fact that this music moves people (Ortega).

During the Chicano Nationalist Movement, a well-known speaker, Rodolfo ‘Corky’ Gonzales, delivered a speech titled Chicano Nationalism: Victory for La Raza. In this speech, Rodolfo Gonzales tries to unify the Latin American people within the United States by using the idea of a family and to create a new political organization for the Chicano people. This speech was a cumulation of various ideas which stemmed from his own life, the experiences of the Chicano people, and the Chicano Nationalist Movement in general. Each of these factors contributed to the context of the speech and how the ideas within the speech are presented by Rodolfo Gonzales. Rodolfo ‘Corky’ Gonzales was born to Federico and Indalesia Gonzales, two Mexican immigrants, on June 18, 1928.
For this book review, I am going to be talking about David Montejano’s book entitled Quixote’s Soldiers, A local history of the Chicano Movement, 1966-1981. The author’s purpose is very well explained and it is not hard to understand. The author clearly tries to explain different ideologies, individuals and organizations located in one of the Southwest’s major cities, San Antonio, Texas, during the late 1960s and early 190s.
