The meal that I chose to make was a citrus and blueberry salad from the 1950s. Traditionally, someone who would have eaten this food would be weather people, as the consumption of fresh fruits was a luxury that only the wealthy could afford. This was because the methods of transporting certain types of fruits along with preserving them were not as advanced as they are today, therefore making them more expensive and hard to come by. The fruits used in this recipe were grapefruit, oranges, and blueberries. The lower classes would have had limited access to these fresh fruits and would typically have consumed cheaper foods such as grains, vegetables, and meats. In the 1950s, this dish would have been served as a side dish or dessert. It most likely would more commonly be eating during the summer months when fruits were more readily available. While it would be possible for a citrus blueberry salad to be saved for special occasions or feast days, it is a rather simple dish with few ingredients that could be made for lunch or dinner. First, I made sure to wash everything. Then the next step was to cut the grapefruit and orange in half. The original recipe said to use canned grapefruit and oranges, but I could not find that at the store so instead, I resorted to cutting up my own. I then used one half of the fruits to squeeze about one tablespoon of both juices into a small bowl for later use. Next I cut up the other halves of the grapefruit and orange into small pieces. The next step in making this salad dish was to measure out three tablespoons of mayonnaise and mix that into the fruit juice. This mixture was going to be the dressing in the salad. The recipe also said that cheese could be added to the dressing but I decided against that addition.
