The Civil War was a battle between the north and south that neither side had anticipated would be so long and difficult. This long lasting war involved several battles that led to thousands of casualties on both sides. A total of more than six hundred twenty thousand American men perished. The objective of the Civil War was to abolish slavery from the north’s perspective, or to keep the southern lifestyle as the southerners justification to fight. The winning side of this war would change the history of slaves, and whether or not it still exists to this day. The grueling war of the Union (north) and Confederates (south) had ended in 1865 with general Robert E. Lee’s decision. Robert E. Lee from the Confederates surrendered the final major army …show more content…
The Northern factories were able to provide guns, equipment, uniforms, and more beneficial necessities that gave the Union the advantage in the Civil War. The advancement of factories gave the Union the upper hand to the Confederates that relied on agriculture with working slaves the most for their resources. Additionally, the North had more workers, value in goods, and railroads as resources that greatly impacted the turnout of the war. For instance, the image in document number one displays the overwhelming ratio of the Union's resources to the lesser amount of resources of the South. From the number of workers to firearms, the North obviously had the advantage. The north was able to use the devastating amount of resources against the South to win the war. The northern resources even allowed there to be effective transportation for the Union soldiers. Union troops could use the higher mileage of railroads to there advantage to transport soldiers quicker during the war as well. The creation of Ironclads was possible with the north’s resources. Document three displays one of the first Ironclads built. These Ironclads helped tremendously in the Civil War, for these massive ships could both transport troops, and in some cases attack the Confederates. These forms of transportation and resources provided the high numbers of Union men assistance throughout the Civil …show more content…
Comparing population in general, the north already had a greater population than the south. According to document 4, “At the beginning of the war the Northern states had a combined population of 22 million people. The Southern states had a combined population of about 9 million. This disparity was reflected in the size of the armies in the field. The Union forces outnumbered the Confederates roughly two to one.” This proved that the number of Union soldiers was greater than the number of Confederate soldiers, thus, once again giving the north the advantage in the Civil War. With so many soldiers the Union could spread around the Confederates and essentially trap them by tactically positioning, and forming blockades. For example, document two shows an image of the Union blockades and surrounding position. These blockades would force the Confederates up into northern territory, that contained even more Union soldiers. This strategy was effective because it left the Confederates with nowhere to go, but into the larger numbers of Union soldiers. The Union soldiers were able to eventually force the Confederates into surrender, with Ulysses S. Grant being the enforcer of the south's
The American Civil War drastically intensified problems between the North and South, as well as disagreements among the citizens of those regions. The North had numerous advantages over the South during the war. They had a larger population which contributed to the amount of people serving and supporting the army. The majority of America’s profitable industries were within the Northern borders which helped the Union support and supply the army and residents. Due to the North having a far larger and better army and navy they were able to besiege the South.
The North’s economy was booming due to factories. The North had twice as much soldiers as the Confederates. Many were colored people who were willing to fight for rights. The South were outnumbered but the soldiers were willing to fight for slavery because many thought the South would lose all of its power and collapse because without slaves, no work could be done to help agriculture.
The technological advancement of steam power helped command the factories and power ships. Steam power gave the north an advantage in war because it was faster and less labor intensive, therefore the South would need to fight back in a way that was impossible for them to match (Steel). The Ships that the Unions factories began producing consisted of iron plating that made them incredibly difficult to sink (steel). The Union was so superior in the navy because “In the South, where iron was scarce and the ability to make powerful steam engines was virtually nonexistent, Confederates were also forced to seek other methods of protecting their ports from an increasingly armored Union fleet” (Steel). The mixture of the steam power and iron ships made it incredibly difficult for the confederates to have any naval advantages and that was simply because the Northern geographic wealth forced them to make technological advancements for the factories which was later put into use of producing powerful materials for making ships of war (steel).
The North would have the advantage over the South due to its strong industrial power and the mass amount of functioning railroad systems in place there. In other words because the North controlled 20,000 miles of the railroad to the 9,000 miles controlled by the south, and had the ability to produce more weapons and supplies needed by its army, and then being able to distribute them because of the railroad, they were able to win the war. By utilizing the railroads, the Union was able to put new and more effective strategies into play over the exterior lines. They invaded the confederacy, and multiplied their forces a great number. The Civil War changed the style of fighting, at this time in history many new weapons were introduced such as railroad weapons, these later led to the invention of modern armored fighting vehicles we know today.
The Northern states in the Union had a variety of advantages on their side, allowing them to become victorious in the Civil War. One of these benefits was that they had nearly double the army that
General McClellan made the South flee causing the Union to win another battle. In Mississippi General Grant led another battle to victory with the surrender of the Confederacy. General Sherman led the Union army in Savannah and destroyed the cities and broke the spirit of the Confederacy. This was another victory. The final battle of the Civil War was led by President Lincoln.
After this battle Lee’s army lost so many of his men that his army was weakened to a point to where he could not repair it any more. The union on the other hand had won this battle and because they had a bigger population they could easily restore there army without a problem. This battle was the turning point of the civil war because the union could now outnumber the confederacy and win the next battles.
A year after the Overland Campaign was completed, and after months of desperately defending Richmond, the Confederates surrendered in April 1865, ending the Civil War. The Overland Campaign is significant because it was the first military campaign in which a military leader was able to look beyond a single decisive battle. Instead, Grant understood the operational level, and continued maneuvering his troops until the final strategic goal was reached. The results of the battles within the campaign had no clear winner and had high casualties on both sides, but the campaign itself was a strategic victory for the
Throughout the Civil War, there were multiple instances in which tables turned. First the Confederacy was winning. Then the Union was in first place. Then there comes the Confederacy again. Then, finally, the Union won.
The South claimed just 9 million people including 3.5 million slaves in 11 Confederate states” (ushistory). [ There are countless strengths and weaknesses between the Union of the north and the Confederates from the South, but how did their differences affect the outcome of the Civil War?] The south had some
The Union was victorious in the Civil War because they had a significant amount more of soldiers and population than the south. In all, the Union had about 500,000 more soldiers than the south (Document 4). As a result, the Union had an advantage over the South because they could
The advantage for the Union was that they had more men and more resources. The Confederate Army also had resources but not as many. The Union army had 87,000 men fighting in this battle and in the Confederate Army there was 45,000 men fighting. Giving a huge advantage to the North. The weapons used were guns, swords, and canons.
The South had 9000 miles of railroads while the North had 22000 miles of railroads. Due to the benefit railroads presented to the North, it utilized this advantage and utilized a method of transport which successfully improved their effort. Moreover, destroying the enemy's methods of transportation was key to the North's ability to win the war. The war’s victor would be the one who was more technologically advanced and who wa the quickest. With The addition of railroads transportation greatly increased the mobility of materials the union needed.
These weapons were mostly used by the Union due to the fact that they created many of the weapons such as the repeaters. The repeaters, repeating rifles made to shoot consecutively before reloading, were an efficient way to shoot quickly and effectively before the Confederates have time to reload. Before the Civil War, soldiers used muskets, which took a long time to load and are close-ranged. However, in the 1850s, rifled weapons including the rifled cannons were created and they played a role in the Civil War. These weapons were used for accuracy and distance to easily destroy the other opponents and win the war.
Reasons why the North Prevailed The South didn't like the North attempting to change their economic means and as a result all the States seceded forming the Confederacy. There are many reasons that caused the civil war. Three main reasons that caused the American Civil war was slavery, states’ rights, Sectionalism. The North prevailed because of Abraham Lincoln, the EmancipationProclamation and how industrialized the north was compared to the south.
