Contrasting Republicans and Democrats Within the realm of American politics, two enduring parties have risen to distinction: Republicans and Democrats. As the nation’s government and politics continue to evolve, these two major groups stand as juxtaposing ideological poles. Each party has its own set of principles, values, and policy objectives. The conflicting viewpoints held by Republicans and Democrats are the foundation of American policy debates and reflect the diverse range of perspectives within the nation’s democratic governance. Both parties have a multifarious history and progression, as well as continuously shifting beliefs on the ever-changing policies within the United States. Founded in the year 1854, the Republican Party, …show more content…
Republicans place focus on decreasing government spending, as well as on lowering taxes. The support of “American-made” products and manufacturing based in the United States belongs to the Republican party. Republicans emphasize the deregulation of the government on the American economy, supporting the pursuit of prosperity without government interference. The Republican Party wants to lower the amount of money put into welfare, as well as the costs of trade, business, and investment. While the Republican Party supports deregulation, the Democratic Party places importance on government regulation in the economy. Democrats support progressive taxation and simultaneously promote policies that benefit low to middle income Americans. Additionally, Democrats believe in encouraging the creation of jobs, investing in clean energy, and supporting small businesses. Similar to their view on economics, both parties have their own corresponding perspectives on Social Security. Many Republicans back having more personal control over their Social Security, as well as the idea of privatization. While some Republicans support the reform of Social Security, others seek reform so as to support the platform’s future evolution. In addition, some Republicans seek to increase the age that individuals are eligible to receive Social Security benefits. Finally, Republicans believe that Social Security should involve means testing, suggesting that those with higher incomes should receive fewer benefits. Democrats reside on the opposite side of the spectrum, in which they do not support the notion of means testing and seek to protect vulnerable and marginalized Americans with Social Security. Congruently, Democrats oppose the privatization of Social Security and support raising or even eliminating the income threshold for Social Security
“Our national system of social security, conceived and developed by the Democratic Party, needs to be extended and improved.” (Democratic Party Platforms), this excerpt from the 1952 Democratic Party Platform. It states that Democrats believe that social security is an important issue that needs to be expanded on. Here is another quote from the 1952 Democratic Party Platform that shows Democratic support for social programs “The welfare of all economic and social groups in our society has been promoted by the sound, progressive and humane policies of the Democratic Party.” (Democratic Party Platforms).
The Republican Party, frequently mentioned as the GOP (Grand Old Party) is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States created on March 20, 1854, is the second most popular political party and is the rival with the Democratic Party. The Republican Party and the Democratic Party has almost nothing in common. The Republican Party believe that there shouldn’t be federal college loans, but instead private loans. The republicans, a member of the Republican Party, also believe that there should be low government spending and minimal involvement. They want the government’s role to stay as low as possible, letting the private part and individual citizens to form the state.
Polarization in politics refers to a sharp division of political attitudes as a party, into opposing parties. Partisan polarization over the past thirty years has negatively affected Congress’s ability to govern. Because of this polarization of the parties, Congress is now divided and practically dysfunctional. Similar voting between the Republicans and the Democrats was common through the 1980’s, but in the 1990’s the parties became ideologically distant with a decline of a center ground and began pulling away from each other. The main causes of this polarization are that Republicans have become more consistently conservative while Democrats have become more consistently liberal.
The Democrat party is considered to be a more liberal party. Their beliefs is for there to be a larger federal government. They feel that the government should be responsible for looking out for the greater good and welfare of the people. Since the Democratic Party was established there has been a total of fifteen Democratic United States Presidents. Republicans began by the supporters of Thomas Jefferson back in 1792.
The Democratic Party and the Republican Party have a long rivalry that predates the American Civil War. Their rivalry is based upon issues much more pressing than any foreign policy dispute that America faces today. This rivalry is based upon the application of human rights and natural rights in the social policies in the United States. These terms, now used interchangeably by most Democrats and Republicans, are the base of all the modern social debates between Republicans and Democrats. But where did this difference begin and how will it affect the development of the two dominating parties of the United States?
Both the Democrats and the Republicans like to think of themselves as the true heirs of Thomas Jefferson. The modern Democrats are historically descended from the Democratic-Republican Party that Jefferson himself organized to thwart the ambitions of Alexander Hamilton (although, ironically, they were known as "Republicans" in Jefferson 's time). Democrats around the country annually celebrate Jefferson-Jackson Dinners, avowedly declaring a connection between Jefferson and the modern Democratic Party. But Republicans claim that their platform of small government and low taxes is more in line with true Jeffersonian philosophy than that of the big-government Democrats.
The Republican Party, also known as the Grand Old Party or GOP, is one of two major political parties in the United States, along with the Democratic Party. TheRepublican Party’s origins date to the mid-nineteenth century amid the divisive national debate over slavery; specifically, the Republican Party was started in the Midwest by a group of political figures who opposed the expansion of slavery into newly acquired territories that had been granted statehood. Since the 1850s, the Republican Party has expanded its political influence nationwide. Numerous Republicans have been elected president of the United States, and the party has been successful in state and local politics from coast to coast. At the presidential level, Republicans had
The Democrats believe there should be only cuts for middle and low-income families, but believe they should be taxed at a higher rate on corporations and wealthy individuals. The Republicans believe there should be tax cuts for everyone, both corporations and people of all income levels. “The Republicans passed the Bankruptcy Bill favoring credit card businesses over Americans whose budgets are destroyed by job loss or medical bills” (Freeman 329). In their turn, the Democrats have passed the Welfare Reform Act, cutting benefits for the poorest layers of the American population.
Democrats vs. Republicans Since the late 1700’s our nation has become split between Democrats and Republicans. Between the two parties there is a lot of tension. On the days of any election many people vied hoping their party can take part in governmental decisions.
The Democratic Party is labeled as a “purple party” with Blue leaders, while the Republican Party is a Red Party with Red Leaders and only gets redder. This means that members of the Democratic Party lean less to the left than Republican members lean to the right. Members of the Republican Party are more “pure” in their views, while members of the Democratic Party are not as firm in their blue stances. Democratic leaders and members are more like to defect from their views than Republican leaders and members. Democratic-leading independents, for example, are more likely to vote Republican than pure Democrats.

The LGBT receives strong support from the Democrats and Democrats lobby for their rights by passing federal laws. Social issues is probably the topic the two parties disagree on the most, but they do agree occasionally. Republican and Democrats are both strong supporters of voters’ rights.
Finally, it will be argued that the modern political party system in the United States is a two-party system dominated by the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. These two parties have won every United States presidential election since 1852 and have controlled the United States Congress since 1856. The Democratic Party generally positions itself as centre-left in American politics and supports a modern American liberal platform, while the Republican Party generally positions itself as centre-right and supports a modern American conservative platform. (Nichols, 1967)
Political parties serve countless roles in America’s government. Foremost, it needs to be said they are crucial to America’s political system. The political parties are the heart and brain of our government's body, urging people to conceive and feel different ways on different topics whether the controversy is over how money is distributed or the way immigrants should be treated or dealt with. With each party having a biased view it shows how a group can be increasingly powerful with bountiful amounts of support, names and divisions can be heard. Democrats are widely known to be liberal rather than conservative.
